Walton-Verona 60 Trimble County 48 (8th Region All A Region Championship)

Recommended Posts

Final from Owen County High School.

This game started out like two heavy weights going at it. Between the electric environment of a packed house of Raider and Bearcat fans and the very efficient play of both teams, the first quarter was flat out awesome to watch.

By the end of the half, Walton Verona was able to take a 13 point lead into halftime. Through the third, the teams pretty much swapped baskets although Walton would build the lead to around 16. The fourth quarter Walton would milk the lead as much as possible trying to shorten the game and hit free throws.

Trimble was led by Mila Consley with 15. Walton did not have much of an answer for her in the post once she got the ball on the block.

Walton was led by Hailey Ison's 28 points, however the HUGE story of the night was the tournament's MVP, Morgan Simpson. She goes 7 for 7 from 3 point range and finishes with her jersey number, 23. That was fun to watch. She was in a zone.

Congrats to the Bearcats on the win and blessings on them as they represent the 8th in Frankfort.

I cannot say enough how much respect I have for the Trimble County coaches and players. They are truly a class act on and off the court. Even after a loss and in the toughest moments, they display the highest character and what matters most after basketball is done and gone. Here is a pic of the highlight of the night led by Trimble County players....

Like mentioned above, during the first quarter, I thought this was going to be a game for the ages. Great first 8 minutes. When Trimble's Black got into foul trouble, they went to a zone and from there it was lights out. WV's Simpson really did some damage. Best wishes to WV in Frankfort! Also, in talking with players, these two teams seem to have a great mutual respect for each other, not just on the court, but off the court too.

Walton-Verona senior forwards Morgan Simpson and Hailey Ison scored a combined total of 51 points in their team’s 60-48 win over Trimble County in the championship game of the girls’ 8th Region All “A” Classic on Friday at Owen County High School.

Simpson made all seven of her 3-point attempts and finished with 23 points. Ison’s final stat line was 28 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

In the first half, Simpson hit five treys and scored 17 points to spark the Bearcats, who opened up a 37-24 lead against the defending regional champs.

“She hit her first couple shots and we starting running screens for her,” said Walton-Verona head coach Mark Clinkenbeard. “We got ahead by a good margin and everything just fell into place from there.”

Simpson was named most valuable player on the regional all-tournament team. The Bearcats’ other all-tournament selections were Ison, sophomore guard Rachel Lehkamp and senior guard Emma Rodgers.

The last time Walton-Verona won the 8th Region All “A” Classic title was 2012 and that team went on to win the small-school state tournament. The Bearcats’ first-round opponent in this year’s state tournament will be the winner of the 6th Region that will be played this week.
