Value placed in district titles seems to be the point of contention in this debate. Would it be possible to break down that category into different eras? A district title in the '60's, '70's, & '80's was basically equivalent to a regional title in this modern six class system.

 

You've done an outstanding job on this, @gchs_uk9. At a certain point, it's like splitting hairs between some of these programs. I would have loved to see my team higher on this list, but I respect the process and the time and work that went into it. At the end of the day, I think it's pretty fair.

If memory serves 1987 was the first year of 2 from each District and no more Sub-Districts.

Good point. 4A was different than the other classes. Runners-up in Jefferson County went in the 70s but across the state for 1A-3A it wasn't until 1987.

You must be mistaken, or there were different rules for Jefferson County than there was statewide.

 

I knew as late as 1984 only one team per district made the playoffs in the statewide pool and thought it changed in the late 80s. Hatz and gchs_uk9 both say 1987 and that sounds about right.

He was right. Jefferson County 4A did it differently. Champs and runners up from each of their four districts made the playoffs.

That was so they could balance out their side of the tourney with the Jefferson County 4A and the other side being the State At Large 4A. Then the 2 winners met.

I didn't go to BCHS and from an outsider looking at both would never have thought of BG as better than Boyle.

Before this season Bowling Green had 654 wins. Good for 10th all time in the state of KY. Just because the only school you pay attention to currently is Boyle County doesn't make you right.

 

It took an incredible run of 5 state championships on a row for Boyle County to be even in consideration with Bowling Green and in about 5 years Boyle County won't even be able to say that they have more state titles than Bowling Green. As of today that Boyle County has 7 state championships and Bowling Green has 5. Other than that Bowling Green has more wins all time, More district championships, more region championships and more state title appearances.

 

You can say Boyle County has a better football program than BG but you're the only person in the whole state who believes that. I applaud your conviction though.

We are still only talking about Boyle for some reason, when I mentioned Male as well, but if we are going to stay on Boyle that is fine. Corbin with wins and loses in the state championships still only matches the amount of titles that Boyle has has, to me it's a no brainer which team should be ranked higher, because district title pale in comparison to winning the entire state championship. After that point getting to the big game, and winning the big game are also different. One team has done that 7 out of 8 try's while Corbin has done it 3 out of 7 times.

 

I respect the heck out of Corbin I just don't respect the heck out of district titles, what I respect is winning the championship and I will go back to the NFC East. I have no respect for any of the teams that win that division. Some teams can win district championship after championship playing little competition.

 

 

Now this is a good argument and if SW were to win 7 more titles giving them 8 championships, I would consider them the better program even in the watered down 6 class system.

Well if BG only had to defeat Rockcastle County and Glasgow every now and then to win a title then I'm sure they'd be in double digits whereas Boyle Count would still only have 7. Just couldn't figure out that Highlands riddle when push came to shove now could they.......
