Back in the Day Corbin and Middlesboro were all that were in their District. The winner of the game went to the playoffs. Loser stayed home even if that was their only loss.

 

Lexington was all in the same District. I recall Henry Clay having a very good team in 1978 but went 10-1 and lost to Lafayette on a bad night and did not go to the post season.

 

Now those tough Districts would get more teams in and could prove themselves in a Second Opportunity.

 

Corbin was undefeated and ranked as the #1 team 2-3 times before losing heartbreakers to either Middlesboro or Somerset and didn't even make the playoffs, ending their season with 1 loss. They and Middlesboro were also in what they called a sub-district back in the early 80's when both were ranked in the top 3 in their class.

What was Boyle before 1999. Nothing. Tradition should play a part and that's exactly why I feel Corbin should be ahead of Boyle. Corbin has always been a contender.

What followed was the nightmare. Sam Burke took the job for one year only and went 2-8. John Griggs followed and went 1-9, 3-7, and I think 0-10.

 

Afterwards Chuck Smith came and the rest is what most of you know.

I think people forget about Boyle's early success because of what I've quoted here. The days were so dark before Chuck Smith came that people forgot that the past history was actually pretty good. And then when Smith blew it out of the water all people remembered was the Griggs years, thus making Smith's job look even more incredible.

Just asking out loud, but I wonder how many State Champions in the modern era would have never had the chance because they finished 2nd in their District in the regular season?

Also the word program is a long term word and means more than just who won the finals. My team has won 5 and sit at #10 because before about 30 years ago they hadn't done a whole lot in the playoff era.

Once again..no denying that in the modern era Boyle is one of the Top 5 programs in KY... but you simply cannot overlook 42 years of football in this study

I haven't argued for them being ahead of Corbin because of history. However it's not like the Redhounds have won a large number of state titles since 1959. But I respect their history.

Okay...same scenario, so since 1997 (Chuck Smith Era thru present day era) Boyle has won 2 more titles than BG and sits 4 spots behind?!?!

 

Doing this rating system is fine but at some point doesn't logic have to allow for adjustments? The college football playoff committee does this. Maybe gchs should too?!?!

If you don't see the difference in being able to sustain success over time and a short burst of unbelievable success as being different I don't know what to say.

 

This is not a study in who is the best program in the present, it is a study in History
