50 Greatest Programs in Kentucky History: #15-8

Featured Replies

Of the 7 teams remaining.. #7 seems like a no-brainer based off the number of Titles won. I also think #6 looks like an easy one.

In fact it almost seems so much of a no brainer for #7 I am wondering if all their District Titles and State Runner-Ups doesnt create a bit of controversy that led to the way gchs released these and pushed the Pause button at #8 :sssh:

Agreed, those playoff wins and district titles thrown into the mix make it really interesting.

I think 1 state title is worth more than 3-5 district titles easily yes, even though 1 state title could be a little flukey. You start compounding multiple state titles like 5-7 even if it is in a short period and I would take that over 30 district titles any day, but that's just my opinion.

Neither of those are comparable to what I'm saying, though.

Is the one title hypothetical team better than Somerset (0 titles, 5 runner-up, 19 district titles) not a hypothetical team with 3-5 district titles and nothing else?

Also, there are no teams ranked ahead of Boyle County without state titles. Corbin has 3 state titles to go along with their 30 district titles and 4 runner-up trophies.

Another fun hypothetical..

If South Warren rattles off 7 more State Titles in a row... during that stretch of time Boyle does not win another District or Regional Title... would Boyle fans consider South Warren the better program historically?

We are still only talking about Boyle for some reason, when I mentioned Male as well, but if we are going to stay on Boyle that is fine. Corbin with wins and loses in the state championships still only matches the amount of titles that Boyle has has, to me it's a no brainer which team should be ranked higher, because district title pale in comparison to winning the entire state championship. After that point getting to the big game, and winning the big game are also different. One team has done that 7 out of 8 try's while Corbin has done it 3 out of 7 times.

I respect the heck out of Corbin I just don't respect the heck out of district titles, what I respect is winning the championship and I will go back to the NFC East. I have no respect for any of the teams that win that division. Some teams can win district championship after championship playing little competition.

Now this is a good argument and if SW were to win 7 more titles giving them 8 championships, I would consider them the better program even in the watered down 6 class system.

This is an outstanding list!

Its objective and provides some outstanding history that would otherwise be forgotten.

I had my owne question in other thread about Flaget. But Flaget counts 2 'State Titles' prior to 1959 and so I get that those do not factor in. To keep this objective that is the way it is.

This is really facinating work with some very valuable insight.

They're my dark horse with everyone talking T and HHS. They have the most region championships and have been winning since the get go. I know they're behind on SC's but may be able to make up the deficit with district titles.

I don't know how many district titles we have, but my guess is all of them in the time frame measured. Minus two because I am usually wrong. I hope it doesn't put us ahead of T or HH because those state titles are the thing. Respect.

That doesn't mean I will say we are not the greatest program, based on other factors such as I live in Mayfield, but any list like this will have quibbles and such, but it has to result in T and HH at the top. Mad props to @gchs_uk9 for the work involved.

Thusfar the best argument in favor of moving Boyle up past Corbin I have seen

The counter point to this though is consecutive titles' merit.

At the HS level it is much easier for a team to go on a "run" of titles depending on a single class of players or an upswing in the talent pool. Look at Fort Campbell with Antonio Andrews as a prime example. The second Andrews and that crop of talent left Ft. Campbell fell off the map.

Unlike the NFL in the excellent illustration you used, in High School all it takes is a couple supreme players to make all the difference. Heck... Hancock County even made it to the Finals with Travis Atwell at QB.

To Boyle's credit I don't think this overly applies to them...they had a run at or near the top for 12 years.... but sometimes when you just have that perfect storm or talent and coaching and timing... it could lead to a run of Championships for a program who normally is not Championship caliber.

On a one-to-one basis I would agree that state titles are more important than district titles, but when you have a a siginificantly larger number of district titles then it means you've been good enough to win your district a majority of years, showing the sustained strength of the program. Unless you can definitively prove that a team as always been in a weak district, and I wish you luck tracking down that information. I brought Boyle only, because I wasn't aware people had an issue with Male's placement.

Also, you never answered the Somerset/hypothetical team question. That's the crux of this... are state titles the only thing that should matter?

I understand the argument of those saying that in their opinion State Champs should count more than 5 district titles. I lean that way too as I think those rare achievements are a little undervalued in this exercise. But this isn't Watusi's formula, it is gchs_uk9's formula and I have enjoyed it immensely.

If I were going to suggest any improvements on an already incredibly detailed and interesting approach here by gchs, I would say give points for Regional Championships, and make State Titles worth double the points they are now.

I have no idea how that would affect individual teams, as that shouldn't be the justification for anyone making suggestions, but I do think it feels like a good tweak.

Your last paragraph.

It's coming again...looking forward to the yearly battles with LexCath, Central and Belfry in years 2017 and beyond.

I also agree it would be really fun to weight those district titles. When only 1 team got in the playoffs, it was worth more than when 2 teams got in, and those were worth more than when 4 teams get in.

When did it change from 1 to 2? 1986?

When did it change from 2 to 4? Early 90s somewhere I think.

I've loved having this discussion with you and the others.

Again, I have no problem where my Rebels are ranked. It's fine with me. Higher would be great, but I won't argue it.

Concerning the consecutive titles merit of Boyle vs. Corbin:

Corbin's main heyday was 1976 to 1982. (A couple of runner ups since then)

The won 3 titles and were runner-up once in that span. So, over a 7 years span.

Boyle won their 5 straight and had a runnerup in a 6 year span. Then they followed it up with two in a row after 6 more years. So over a 12 year span, Boyle wins 7 and is runnerup once.

Does that compare greater or the same to Corbin's run?

FWIW, I saw Corbin in 1977 up front and personal from the Boyle sideline. They were a beast of a team. In 1976 and 1977 they and Mayfield were as good as anyone in the state even though they were AA. Put on two tremendous struggles for the State Crown.

I also agree it would be really fun to weight those district titles. When only 1 team got in the playoffs, it was worth more than when 2 teams got in, and those were worth more than when 4 teams get in.

If memory serves 1987 was the first year of 2 from each District and no more Sub-Districts.

I think it was the mid 90's or so that the 4 teams getting in came into play. Maybe '93?

Correct, 1987 was the first year for two teams per district with no sub-districts.

1991 was the first year for four teams per district in the playoffs.

It's funny how people often wax poetically about the good old days with two teams per district, but it only lasted for four years!
