Bell County (Log Mountain). Watched LaRue play Bell in the playoffs a few years ago.

 

Never seen a football game at Bethlehem (Lally Field), but have seen plenty of soccer. Jim isn't lying. They are right on top of you.

 

Manual Stadium has a nice, historic feel to it. Plus, the end zone is NOT flat on the side closest to where you enter. It has a hill.

 

Louisville Central's home side is built INTO a building. Also cool to watch the Jackets march in and out (after a win especially).

 

Fort Knox is cool when the soldiers are there. But I've only ever seen one game when that's happened.

 

Meade County's Hamilton Field (Death Valley) is eery in the fall. The cemetery overlooking the visitors' side can be daunting.

 

Elizabethtown is NOT unique, but it is quite nice. Field Turf plus new bleachers plus killer scoreboard/videoboard.

If you've read this site much at all over the last year or so, I'm sure you've seen threads on CovCath and lights.

 

The Saturday afternoon games are unique for sure. And the student section generally creates a fun atmosphere (for at least the first half). And hopefully by next year they will be playing home games on Friday nights, so the next [last] few home games on Saturday afternoons will be historic.

Nothing beats the friday night football atmosphere

Mayfield's War Memorial and Russellville's Rhea come immediately to mind, both are WPA stadiums, giant hulking structures from an era long ago. At Mayfield you can tailgate much like one does at a college venue adding to the experience

Putnam is really nice.

 

An underrated place is Garrard. Love the hedges there. Cool place to play/coach a game at.

Beechwood. For some reason that place still feels like how High School football should feel.

 

Harlan Co. Best stadium and friendliest fanbase I know. When they play Youll never get out of Harlan alive before the game, that is special.

Not been to many of the stadiums outside the NKy area, so my sample set is limited. Ludlow is hands down my favorite. Have to walk right past all the neighbors on their porch getting "game ready". Usually they will offer you an adult pop. When a barge goes by on river it seems like the visting team could hop aboard. A close second is Dayton. It's old. The mud stinks. But it's all part of it. Probably as a fan you feel the closest to the action.

I would say that pretty much covers it....

but across the river id say Elder's Pit and Withrow are two really cool stadiums.

 

I don't think its as old timey and magical as Dayton, Bellevue, Holmes or Ludlow but Highlands is kinda cool. The one side of the field is right next to the brick high school.

Forgot about Marion ("between the hedges"), Corbin (saw LaRue play Corbin there in the playoffs in the driving rain) and X :(was told when Meade played X there in the playoffs in the state semis it was X's biggest crowd to date; Meade invaded).

Gilligan Stadium - Bellevue. It was originally constructed in the early 1930's as a New Deal public works project. The bleachers are on one side of the field, and good Lord are they steep!!!! I ABSOLUTELY love watching games here, especially from near the top.

 

Tomorrow, I will try and get pictures of the place for you to see (only a 90 second walk from my house).

 

My Dad took me down there 2xs per week to run those things in high school. They are about straight up as it gets.

I went up to see my daughter play lacrosse this past weekend. She plays for a D3 college in mid-Michigan and it was also their homecoming. We all went to the football game Saturday afternoon and I was looking around the stadium and I started thinking about this thread and how fortunate we are to have a "cool" factor to a fair amount of our high school venues in the state. She has played in all of the conference stadiums and just like hers they are all boring and very nondescript and lacking any character. She has mentioned if they had games at Beechwood it would be the nicest place they play in. I am partial to Beechwood of course but the setting at Somerset was nice and the corner of the end zone at Dayton that was mentioned previously made me stop in my tracks. If I remember correctly, it was a pedestrian walkway that cut the corner and had a barrier separating the field of play from the walkway, and had the actual corner of the end zone painted on the walkway. It's been a few years since I have been there so I am not 100% positive what I saw.

Newport (Pre-turf) actually had a back corner of an end zone painted on the track... that would have been tough to land on in cleats!

I think Highlands is an excellent place to watch a game. You are so close to the field you can hear everything. The field is literally a few feet away from the school. It is so comfy and cozy there that you'd swear that the field doesn't look regulation size. The noise that bounces off the school and reverberates back to the field is incredible. When they had the cannon it was even better.

I love this thread but I gotta confess that I cannot stand any stadium which has seats (bleachers) on only one side. There is nothing charming about it for me. Aside from that I love this thread. Would like to visit many other stadiums.

Went down to Gilligan Stadium (Bellevue HS) this afternoon after work and took the following pictures. While I was there I talked with former Bellevue great, Doug Miller ('83) who is an Asst. Coach, who said there are plans to replace the light poles. Right now there are 8 and this will be cut down to only 4.
