Unique Venues and Atmospheres in Kentucky

Featured Replies

I know this topic has been discussed before but I was hoping people would contribute some places to visit in the state of KY. I am trying to take my son to a lot of places before he gets too old to want to be seen with me and would like some advice on must see places or unique places.

My favorite place we have visited so far was Breathitt Co., it reminded of another era with the overhang and spirit line before the game etc... It's been a couple of years since we went there.

Where do you enjoy watching games? Why?

Thanks!!

Log Mountain in Bell County.

Before it gets dark. Football field, bulding at one end, otherwise tree-covered hilltops all around. Sort of like playing football on top of the world.

I played at Bell Co. when I was in high school very cool indeed and got the chance to see a playoff game at Frankfort a few years ago (once I finally found the field). It was neat how it is tucked in a neighborhood and if you didn't know it was there you would never know.

Gilligan Stadium - Bellevue. It was originally constructed in the early 1930's as a New Deal public works project. The bleachers are on one side of the field, and good Lord are they steep!!!! I ABSOLUTELY love watching games here, especially from near the top.

Tomorrow, I will try and get pictures of the place for you to see (only a 90 second walk from my house).

As far as the local Bardstown area, I really enjoy Lally Field where Bethlehem currently plays. It's a very intimate field tucked back behind St. Monica Church, with not a lot of seating (or parking), even with the addition of what has become an always-packed and rowdy student section area.

The home bleachers and small press box are right on top of the visiting team's sideline, which has to make it uncomfortable for road teams. There's always a ring of people around the fenceline on the bleacher side, and if the bleachers fill up quick, there might be 3-4 deep on the fences at big games. Visitor's bleachers are down near the 20 on the road team sideline.

There is talk of Bethlehem setting up a complex for all of its sports facilities, because they are currently spread out across several locations around Bardstown. While I understand this desire, I think it would be a shame to see Lally Field retired.

Putnam in Ashland is amazing if you pick a game that will be a packed house.

I love stadiums that are set in city neighborhoods. I'll always remember being able to look out my back porch back when I lived on Wallace Avenue in Covington and watch games at Holmes' stadium.

I lived on Sterrett when I was very young. I can remember my dad carrying me down to the old field.

Corbin is a neat setting for a game.

I couldn't tell you where. But I remember as a kid watching a game somewhere in Eastern KY with my grandpa.I think it was around Hazard but not in Hazard? I remember it being surrounded by woods and a huge coal mine. I I recall thinking it was such an amazing stadium. remember my grandpa pointing to the mine and telling me most of the kids on the field will be working in that mine next year. Then he told me how once in a while one will be good enough to play in college but they were rare. I asked him how he got out of the mine. He looked at me and said... Pearl Harbor.

...and by the way just a beautiful setting for a field. I think the most unique in NKY.

I would agree with this.

I'm partial to Rockcastle County and Ashland/Putnam.

I think old Manual Stadium is a really cool one. It has some of the "more original" lettering and ticket window still there. The field was constructed/designated in 1923 I believe.
