Next I want to ask who everyone thinks is the best team in the state?

Personally, I think Trinity was the best team that for obvious reasons threw up a clunker in the region to Ballard.

Ballard was a very good team and very quick, but Trinity had the superior team IMO, that did not show up for that game.

Also, I believe Trinity beat more teams in the state tournament than anyone else. In fact, I think Ballard was the only team they lost to that was in the tournament.

Trinity had a lot of talent but I don't think they were the best team in the state. Trinity's schedule had them playing more teams that made the state tournament and that is why they beat more of them.

And it is hard to claim best team in the state status when you aren't the best team in the 7th Region.

I think it can be acknowledged that the best team doesn't always win the tournament. I think there is little doubt Owensboro played the best tournament, as in their play was the most consistent over those 4 days.

 

If the chips were down and the teams were playing 7 game series against each other, I would pick Ballard as the best team in the state. You're talking about a team that lost one game against Kentucky competition, and it was in the final game of the year. They played only a handful of games where the other team was even within single digits. But recently it sure doesn't seem like the Sweet 16 format is their forte, because they just cannot navigate all the way through it unbeaten. They had a poor game at the wrong time against Boyle County.

I thought I heard that Ballard did not lose to a KY team all year until Boyle in the Sweet 16. If that is true, how does that make Trinity superior? Do they have the same claim except vs Ballard?

Yes. Owensboro improved all season. They kept getting better as the year went on. Some teams like Trinity peaked early and won games against good teams but stayed the same all year. Owensboro was a different team from the one I saw at this years KOB. Teams that improve all year and are playing better at the end of the season is a team that can win the state championship. Owensboro's win over Cov.Cath proved to me they can beat anybody. They had every opportunity to lose that game and found a way to win.

Owensboro was a matchup nightmare for everyone in the state. There aren't too many teams around that can handle one 6'10 guy, but then they also have a 6'8 270lb kid also??? That's tough to beat, and tough to prepare for within the Sweet 16 with zero practice time. They may not have been the best team all season per se, but they were best equipped team to win the state and they did.

How can the best team not be Owensboro? I'm confused. It's not like we'll agree on who the best team was before the tournament. Owensboro won the whole thing fair and square and earned the right to be called the best team in the state.

Teams lose to teams worse than them all the time in major one and out tournaments/playoffs. Look at the NCAA tournament last weekend. There are clearly teams that won games that are worse than the team they beat. It is easy to second guess and make claims but only one thing matters - scoreboard. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about Owensboro because they can walk down the hall and point to the trophy that proves they were the best team in the state when it mattered.

In any sport where there are single elimination championship games, this debate will always be there. You could argue for a handful of teams that they were the best in the state. At the end of the day, the hardware is sitting in a trophy case in Owensboro. They were the best team in the state when it mattered most.

The state assembled 128 teams into 16 regional tournaments and played a single elimination tournament....Owensboro was the last team standing. They win. They are state champs. They didn't have to beat the other 127, they just had to beat every team in front of them without losing a single game. They did. They win.

 

There are countless teams that can play a "what if" game, Trinity among them, but at the end of the day, Owensboro is the KHSAA State Basketball Champion. Period.

Watched last 6 minutes of CCH game again. Colonels were up 9 with 6 to go. CCH missed (3) FTs, with one being a front end. Other than that, O'boro turned up the heat & forced (3) TO's, plus hit crucial 3's, ran a great OOB play, and (2) huge offensive boards. Finally, they answered back when Schumate's shot would have devastated many teams.

 

Owensboro the best. Final answer.
