I can't BELIEVE that I quoted Christian Laettner, but it's true. I think it's kind of tacky to second guess a win. You can play the "Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda" game until Jesus comes, but it won't change the results. You are only as good as your last game and Owensboro was the best and they will always have the trophy to prove it.

It looks like most agree that it should be based on tournament results. If were going by that standard, Owensboro isn't even the best team in the 9th District. :lol2: Go Eagles!

Looks like to me they were the best team on the floor 31 of the 35 times they played this season & the 35th game happened to be the state title. Didn't see them play all year, but good for them & congrats for being consistent and being able to handle the stretch run of the District/Region/State, no easy task whatsoever.

It doesn't matter. All that matters is that Owensboro won the State Tournament. All else is irrelevant fluff.

I cant believe you did either!! I watched the 30 for 30 on him, and I think it was supposed to "humanize" him............didn't work!! I still hate Christian Laettner.

First I want to congratulate Owensboro on their championship.

Next I want to ask who everyone thinks is the best team in the state?

Personally, I think Trinity was the best team that for obvious reasons threw up a clunker in the region to Ballard.

Ballard was a very good team and very quick, but Trinity had the superior team IMO, that did not show up for that game.

Also, I believe Trinity beat more teams in the state tournament than anyone else. In fact, I think Ballard was the only team they lost to that was in the tournament.

Any thoughts?

 

You could just as easily say the exact same thing about 6A football this past season. There is no question that Male was the best team all season but at the end of the day when it came down to it in the playoffs were they the best team that day? No they weren't. If you want to be the best team you need to be the best team when it matters most and the Rocks didn't do that against Ballard.

I only got to see Trinity early in the season in the Lex Cath tourney. Also got to see Henderson, Cov Cath, Lex Cath and Boyle (several times). Also got to see New Cath in the all A. At that point I thought Henderson and New Cath looked better than all the others. After watching the quarterfinals of the state tourney, The 2 teams that stood out the most to me were Owensboro (overall personna) and Cov Cath (toughness and style of play. I think Owensboro was certainly the best team in ky over the last 3 weeks if not sooner.

Agree 100%. Trinity had the opportunity to get it done and it didn't happen.

I respect all the talent Trinity had, but its hard for me to believe it was the best team in the state when it played in 4 in-state tournaments this season (Traditional Bank Holiday Classic in Lexington, LIT, 27th district and 7th region), and the only one in which it made it to the finals was the 27th district tournament.

I never thought they were as talented as people painted them to be.

 

It's simple. Owensboro has the trophy so Owensboro is the best.

Boyle County had the toughest Sweet 16 draw. No one else is close.

 

I would agree with that if Boyle had the most difficult, especially if they had to play KCC. I don't know how I missed them. But since they didn't and going on who won each round I would call hoptown a close second..almost even, not that it matters (according to your seeding they both add up to 15).

 

I would complain a little if a team gets to the finals without playing a top team in the state. If a team plays others who are not even close to be ranked in the top 20 like Bowling Green did this year with Elliot Co. and Calloway Co., then its hard to call them the best team in the state. That rarely happens though. If Bowling Green would have won this year, I wouldn't call them the best team in the state, rather the luckiest because they didn't play a top 10 team the whole touurnament (according to any rankings). But that is what you get with a draw instead of seeding. Nature of the beast.

 

I like the Maher rankings, I know it is based on analytics and no eye test, but they have been pretty good. According to that, Elliot was 102 and Calloway 42 at the end of the season (2/26). Where as Boyle played the number 1 and number 7 team to get to the final four.

 

I know I might get slammed by this idea, but it is what it is...my opinion.

Well this is an interesting thread. I'll say that I've seen some good teams this year. Doss, Henderson County, Bowling Green, Hopkinsville, Cov Cath, and Trinity stand out right off the top of my head as really good teams that OHS has played. When clicking, Apollo's starting 5 was about as nasty as they came as well.

 

Many teams across the Commonwealth have had great seasons. I've watched great OHS teams lose at the State tournament and therefore they weren't the best teams those particular years. It'd been 35 years and I was wondering if OHS would ever get it done again, but Rod Drake never wavered. Hell, I still think OHS' football team was better than Highlands but the Birds have the 2014 4A trophy and that's all that matters. We can debate on who would win a 7 game series and we'd all never truly agree on who that team would be.

 

I know this: OHS presents some pretty bad matchups for most team due to their size. I think Trinity gave OHS fits cause they matched up inside and was able to force OHS' guards into turnovers. However, OHS' guards came along and those turnovers went away vs teams like Hoptown, Cov Cath, and BG.

 

In a one game scenario anything is possible. But what we do know is that OHS is the 2015 KHSAA State Basketball Champs and the rest is speculation!

It's not right to take anything away from Owensboro. My guess is that if they played Trinity in Rupp last Sunday they probably would've avenged their earlier loss. I'm surprised that not many people brought up the fact that Boyle County shot 47 free throws last Friday night- (hit 40!) Would your favorite high school team be able to climb that officiating fiasco? Be honest... Being said- Ballard would've had a really tough time beating Owensboro.
