The Dean went on to say how important a resume is in the process. A young man raised his hand and asked about listing our a High School on a resume and she said "No need to list a high school unless you went to Louisville St. Xavier, Covington Catholic, or Notre Dame,

Simply put these school built young men and women of high character and high ability to succeed in life. These High Schools educate young men and women spiritually, academically, physically, and socially.

 

In fairness they do not take trouble makers and drop out rates are basically non existent. I will be happy to compare academic success (and life long success) of our graduates with any other school in the Commonwealth. Is that being overly flattering, no its the fact.

 

If I had to sent my son to a public school, I would work hard to get him to HHS, BWHS, or WVHS in Northern Kentucky.

 

That's one woman's opinion. Cov Cath's a great school...but it's not the ONLY great school.

 

I graduated from Cov Cath, my brothers did, my dad did, my uncles did, even my grandpa did...and you're doing a hell of a good job earning all of us a bad reputation as being arrogant windbags.

Covington Catholic had better be a better school then the others, why else would I sent me kid there paying tuition? Considering what I got there, what my family got their, what my kids are getting there, its worth the HUGE sacrifice we all have made. My family has graduated over 20 from Covington Catholic and over 10 from Notre Dame. Like their classmates, all are contributing members of their communities and "give back" to their communities and their school. I will be happy to review the long term success of our graduates with you and any others who wish to compare notes.

If all of the numbers flying around are true, those scores are amazing. It wasn't long ago that 26/27 were darn good scores and equated to scholarship money. Now for many high schools, it seems they're about average.

 

Not to get sidetracked but I feel like schools prepare kids a whole lot better for the ACT these days than when I was in school.

Like I said. Cov Cath is a great school...but it's not the only great school. And if you're going to continue going on about "long term success", then I should point you in the direction of Latin School. They don't graduate the same number of students that Cov Cath does, but if you want to look at percentages as far as monetary "success" goes, Covington Latin absolutely rolls over everyone else in NKY. For example...I went to CLS for one year, and out of the 64 students in my freshman class there, they have 13 who became medical doctors. I graduated from Cov Cath in a class of 113 students, and we had 1 who became a medical doctor.

Lots of people make sacrifices to send their children to Catholic High Schools. Lots of graduates from other high schools go on to do great things and give back to their communities. Covington Catholic does not hold the market on academic and career success.

This debate has been simmering for several decades among professional educators and scholars alike. One recent study -- Public Schools Outperform Private Schools, Book Says - Education Week has a good review -- suggests that private schools' perceived "edge" may be due to the relatively high socioeconomic status enjoyed by many of the families who tend to favor a private school education. If the students/families are narrowed down to a similar set of demographics across the board, then apparently public schools do just fine and may even display a slight advantage. I have no horse in this race, but like others on this thread I'm not comfortable with the idea that any school has an exclusive claim to excellence. Each of us has a right to school pride -- just not at the expense of others' dignity.

So anyway, about the original topic and mexitucky's original question about Cov Cath's basketball team....

I agree, CWB.....puts the blue colonels alum in a bad light.

Someone asked why go to Covington Catholic if you are going to be sweezed out of basketball? How about the # 1 education in Northern Kentucky. No offense to HHS, BW, WV but Covington Catholic is better. Look at the ACT, SAT, and graduation rate. Let's not forget these are STUDENT athletes.

 

Hell, I got a 17 on the ACT and I'm one of the smartest people I know. :lol2:

 

I couldn't care less about ACT scores and all that other :poop:, you can get a great education at any school, but it all depends on parental involvement and how much work the student is willing to put into getting that education. My kids went, are going, and will be going to NewCath because of 1st and foremost, Faith-based education, 2nd quality/dedication of the teachers (8 still there that taught me 30+ years ago), 3rd, the family atmosphere, and how parents/alum work to getting things done that you would not see in a lot of public school. It's well worth the sacrifice now, for what is gained later.

Lots of people make sacrifices to send their children to Catholic High Schools. Lots of graduates from other high schools go on to do great things and give back to their communities. Covington Catholic does not hold the market on academic and career success.
