I witnessed the Diocesan 7th Grade and 8th Grade boys basketball tournaments last week.

 

The CovCath feeders are loaded - St. Pius and St. Joe, Crescent Springs 8th Graders played to a one point differential in the finals and demolished all comers (from Campbell County) to get there. Blessed Sacrament, St. Agnes, and St. Pius 7th Grade teams are loaded.

 

My question is - With a present 20 man freshman team (undefeated), two additional freshmen that are moved up (one named Ruthsatz), and a plethora of talent in the pipeline the Colonels are loaded for the near future. Where do all of these good players fit in their program??? If they all go to CovCath, they are going to have intermural teams that could compete in many districts. There is no way that CovCath can keep them all happy.

 

Will St. Henry, Holy Cross, and Beechwood derive spinoff benefits of kids with talent seeking other venues in which they can compete???

 

I'm not so sure with the talent that CovCath has in the house and in the feeders that they aren't on the verge of some kind of dominating run.

 

Yes they have a lot of talent in the pipeline so to speak. There may be some kids end up at Holy Cross or St Henry, but I doubt any go to Beechwood. There will also be others who simply decide to play intramural basketball, and then play other sports competitively. I know many of these 7th and 8th graders, and can say there are a number who are very talented in other sports as well. I think with the success and excitement that is going on at Cov Cath, the boys will still want to be a part of it, even if they do not play for Ruthsatz.

I'm afraid CovCath fans are setting themselves up for a big disappointment in a few weeks.

 

I would take the field over CovCath winning the 9th this year.

 

I still say NCC has the same chance of winning the 9th as CCH does.

They will have the greatest intramural league in the state. They have some deep classes with kids that can play, not too many of them jump ship just to play ball.

Also headed to CovCath are the better athletes from IHM. In basketball took 2 of 3 games from St. Joe this year and battled St. Pius into the 4th quarter of their 7 games this year. Some really talented basketball, football, baseball, swimmers, and soccer players in that group.

 

I guess my question is - Are all of these fine basketball players willing to give up playing the sport??? Do they feel that the CovCath program has become (or is becoming) elitieist??? Or are they all simply young teenagers living the dream of someday playing varsity basketball for the Colonels without doing the math???

Strategic growth in the sports program at CCH. Takes time but if you have a plan then good things will happen.

I'm sure some will make the team, some will give up basketball to focus on other sports, some will give up sports, and some may transfer. No different than incoming classes at most other schools I suspect.

Do people not think schools like Moeller, St. Xavier, and Trinity, with 3x the boys that CovCath have, don't have the same issues every year in every sport? The best players will play, the others will do other things or will leave. If they leave, perhaps they didn't choose CovCath for the right reasons to begin with. My son will attend CovCath one day, and I can promise you if he gets cut from his two primary sports, he will not be transferring. Will I be happy...no. However, it will be a teaching moment, he'll be able to continue playing in a myriad of other ways, and life will go on.

I agree with MTG's comments. You go to a high school for the total package, with sports being one slice of the pie.

 

I also agree that many other schools have the same "good" problems of too many good prospects.

 

If a player is truly driven by playing basketball, however, I could see him shopping around to find another quality high school where he could play and contribute on the varsity level. If it is that important to him.

 

Elitist meaning CVH a soph. Two freshmen moved up, an undefeated freshmen group of 20, two more coming in from across the river. Not too many opportunities out there for the common Colonel.

Mustang, I don't mean to make light of your point, in the real world, you're absolutely right. If my son was hell-bent on playing one of his sports, and he wasn't going to have that opportunity at CovCath, I would have to be open-minded to him going somewhere else and play. There are a number of positives that would come to going to another fine school like St. Henry and playing varsity sports, as there are a number of positives (in my opinion) to staying at CovCath even if he isn't good enough to compete at the varsity level. For me it would be an easy decision, for my son....probably wouldn't be quite as cut-and-dried.

I think many do it the other way around. Where's the best team/Where will I be able to play, with academics being the smaller part of the pie. Just look at the distances that private schools draw from, or the rise of out-of-district players going to public schools. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, because in some places, you can have both - or at least better your situation in both vs your closest school.

 

But saying it's all about academics and no one is picking the school because of the sports is just being naive. The players, the real-deal players in any sport, are going to have athletics first on the list.

^^^ I agree with that too. Parents view with the total package vision. Kids often judge a school based on their perception of their athletic programs. I preached that over and again to our former administration. Fortunately, the present administration gets it.
