Just curious, but how many people do these teams average for a game per season?

 

I know as of a few years ago Marshall used to have a pretty big crowd for their home games, as did Graves...not sure about recent history.

In the 9th, I don't know the capacity, but it would have to be Heritage Academy... they recently did an expansion that got them from 2 row of bleachers to 5 rows of bleachers!

Actually, Cordia is not the smallest in the 14th region. That distinction would go to Riverside Christian in Breathitt County.

Augusta seats more than both of those and probably Brossart too.

In the 9th, Ryle, Conner, and Holmes have the largest gyms.

 

I assume Boone is right behind those three as they also have upper level seating.

Good question, I would be curious to know that too. It would probably be hard to get factual information regaurding that though.

 

They do help with graduations and other large community events.

 

Most of these gyms were built during the consolidation years of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Many communities were upset to see their small schools disappear. By building large schools, large gyms, auditoriums, shop classrooms, music classrooms, etc. schools wowed their new constituents by overwhelmingly showing how much better things would now be. New schools today, at least in our area, have shied away from monster gyms and are much smaller.

 

 

That makes sense, particularly if said gym is in a location that doesn't have other facilities available to hold such events.

 

Personally I don't care much for the supersized gyms. High school ball just doesn't draw the crowds to fill them up 95% of the time. The 5,000+ seat gyms around the state probably run at 50% capacity or less for most games. I enjoy a good atmosphere, so watching a game in a half empty cavern just doesn't do it for me. The large gyms are great when they fill up, but I doubt that happens very often.

I was told that when Somerset's was built back in the day (not sure what year) it was either the largest or one of the largest in the state. Seats maybe 2000...maybe counting baseline expansion a few years ago. Somerset does have one of the more unique gyms in the state.

I've been at Conner when they use to rotate the regional championship among the 3 NKY counties of Boone, Kenton, and Campbell. I remember watching Holy Cross and Conner play in the championship game, the place was packed...people were sitting in each other's laps practically, it was great! I like the Bank of Kentucky Center, but the days of the regional championship games at Conner, Holmes, and Campbell County were good times.

I was told that when Somerset's was built back in the day (not sure what year) it was either the largest or one of the largest in the state. Seats maybe 2000...maybe counting baseline expansion a few years ago. Somerset does have one of the more unique gyms in the state.

 

I always enjoyed the Briar Patch when I was working over in that area. Also loved Monticello's gym.
