Are there any gyms left where the stage is at one end?

 

Bethlehem High School in Bardstown is like this. Marion County's Roby Dome is as well. Neighboring Washington County used to be that way, but they just opened a new school.

Lee County has a stage at one end of their gym. They have a nice facility, which opened in 1965.

Powell County has a gym that has a stage on one end. Their gym opened in 1978 and seats 3,500. They add seating to the stage area when they host the region, which they will this year.

In the 2nd region, there are Lyon County & Trigg County (District 5) and Christian County (District 8) that I can remember. Was only in Crittenden's new one once; never been to Ft. Campbell or University Heights.

 

Dawson Springs is one of my favorite gyms: seating in a "U" (with a wall at the end,) all one level, not a bad seat in the house, general entrance at one end...and you pass the concession stands and restrooms on your way in. KHSAA says it will hold 1,200. Love it!

I will throw out some oldie but goodies from Eastern Kentucky. The gyms @ Johns Creek, Mullins & Feds Creek were pretty intimate to say the least.

 

Johns Creek had the stage @ the end with the U shaped seating around the rest of the floor. I would say about 7-8 rows of plank board seating around the 3 sides. The most interesting part of the gym in my opinion was the entire seating area was raised up around 5 feet off the floor so that the floor was down in a 3 sided bowl basically. the out of bounds areas were less than 2 feet from the walls. The scorers table was elevated up in the seating area as well. The basketball coaches office was under the stands & there was a little sliding door that you could open @ floor level to actually see out onto the floor. The gym @ Mullins High School was basically exactly the same

 

All these schools were both built during the same time & looked very similar, but the gyms were different. Feds Creeks gym was way more compact. The floor was shorter & not as wide, no way it was regulation. The 3 point line basically ran out of bounds in the corners. The gym had 4 rows of stands on both sides, but they build an upper level with 4 more rows of stands (no way it was built to code) & the stairs were super tight to get up to the top. The team benches were the first row of stands & when you were on the bench (where I spend a lot of quality time) your feet were over the out of bounds line.

 

Millard had a gym with a stage @ the end & only seating on the one side of the gym. I could go on & on about all of these schools. Pikeville High School had the best gym in the area when I was there.

 

Not sure about now, but Phelps had a rubberized gym floor back in the late 80's early 90's. It was painful if there was a loose ball.

Oh yeah, a different kind of playing surface. McLean County (3rd Region) was unique in a couple of respects: the floor (though I don't remember it's composition,) and there was an enclosed pressbox at the top of the gym on the visitors' side. I would move one of the ceiling tile and hang a crowd microphone over the front of the box so it didn't sound like you were broadcasting from inside a...um...well, a box.

 

And boy did it get hot in there. Our town took two radio stations, and the other guys would set up near the doorway where they could get some air. At least we were never bothered by the crowd.

 

The only other pressbox in a gym that I remember was at Trigg County (2nd Region.) It hung over the crowd on one side. Fans never bothered you. It took awhile to get up the steps and inside with all of the equipment, but once everyone was seated, things worked out pretty well.

Henry Co. gym to me was always special. When I was a kid going over there seemed like you were in Madison square gardens. During regional tournament time the place was electric. It reminds me of so many of those gyms up in Indiana. The ones that used to fill up every game.I might add that I went down to the Marshall Co. hoop fest and came away in awe of their gym. It`s a great venue.

I do recall that. I haven't been there in years. Huge place with a great region atmosphere.
