I just don't see any way that this is an acceptable way to handle this type of violation. The man did not attack, charge, draw a gun or weapon. He didn't appear to be cursing. Is it criminal? IMO it has to be. Murder, manslaughter involuntary or voluntary. In this instance, it did not look like any of the officers were in danger. People can defend the officers actions all they want, but that is protecting the profession blindly and not looking at each circumstance individually.

 

I truly believe you give police officers the benefit of the doubt. There is no doubt in this one to me.

 

I'm torn on this issue . But your points in the first paragraph are irrelevant . The lack of danger doesn't matter he resisted arrest . When cops tell you , you are arrested you submit and he did not do that . You put your hands behind your back and he did not do that . They gave him chances and he argued . Outside of the neck move the force on the ground was pretty common and you can see it on cop reruns every day .

 

My concern more lies with the reason for the stop . If it's true most of these cases end with a summons or a ticket what made this case special to arrest this man . If the decision to arrest him from the start was flawed someone should punished .

Dang it. Now I agree with Rand AGAIN.

I saw a long version of this video, and I question the length of time it took to initiate any care for this man. Clearly he was in trouble shortly after hitting the ground, yet no one made an attempt to clear his airway? They let him lie there with the handcuffs on? They didn't seem to be in a big hurry to call for medical help. Even when EMS arrived they were very slow to assess the man.

He could have had an outstanding warrant, I don't know.

 

I will say that after watching to video several times, while the choke hold/neck restraint is getting all the attention, I think that the "pressure on the chest" and "prone positioning" was what led to more of his difficulty breathing. I was a paramedic for 18 years, his medical history of asthma and his poor physical condition aided in his difficulty breathing. That being said, as I stated before, I would think the other factors the police did was more detrimental than the 15 seconds of whatever you want to call it on his neck was. JMHO.

I think this case should have gone to court. Having seen the video several times, I think there should have been an indictment. I know he resisted arrest, I understand the dilemma that places the police in. The more I watch it, with the crime involved, it just looks excessive.
