June 25, 201610 yr Hadorn's Bakery in downtown Bardstown is a must. They do the original Yum-Yums. I'm also a big fan of their apple jacks and pecan danishes. I've been trying to cut down over the past year though so I've not visited in a while, sadly. I always loved getting together with my mom's family in Iowa during Christmas. That meant at least one night we would be making Ferdins, a type of German doughnut. They always dusted them in grain sugar when they first came out of the fryer. Never occurred to them until my suggestion about 10 years ago that powdered sugar might hold better, and taste better. Winner, and cultural revolutionary!
June 25, 201610 yr Shipley's Do-nuts in Greenville, MS. KK comes close when fresh, but Shipley's are the best when fresh and still amazing all day long.
June 25, 201610 yr Have not had any recently but the donuts at Graeters are excellent, right there with the best. I like cake donuts. Their cake donuts are perfect - right between the usual cake donut and a Krispy Kreme. Not too heavy and not too light.
June 25, 201610 yr Someone tell me about Paradise Donuts. Do they have two NKY locations? Anyone had their donut birthday cakes? @Clyde We visited the Hebron location this past Winter. Walked in about an hour from closing, the staff was great. They actually gave us quite a few freebies due to it being close to closing time.
June 25, 201610 yr If I had to choose a "Mom and Pop" doughnut store it would be the one over at Eagle Lake in lawrenceburg.... Best Doughnuts maybe? I'm not sure that's the name of it, but IMO it should be! Edited June 25, 201610 yr by Blake1978j Content
June 25, 201610 yr Was in Miani two weeks back. They have Dunkin' Doughnuts all over the place. Every night on my way back to my hotel, I'd stop and get two "Croissant Doughnuts" - $1.49 each - But Excellent, Thick with a croissant texture!!! That plus a LARGE cappuccino (sp) and I was ready for bed. DDs are all over the place down here. A couple of weeks ago, Mrs. S was babysitting the grandkids over in Apopka. She asked where they wanted to eat lunch. My 4 year old grandson asked, "Can we go to Dunkin' Donuts?" He asked his other Grandmother for "bakery goods" the other day.
June 25, 201610 yr Amons in Somerset has the best cold glazed doughnuts I've eaten. KK hot are the best hot doughnuts but Amons cold are incredible. They have a coconut doughnut that they are famous for but I'll pass, I hate coconut. Is this the place that is connected to a gas station? If so, their donuts are the best I have ever eaten. My buddy has a house in Somerset and docks his boat at Conley Bottom and he always gets a dozen when we visit. Amons though doesn't sound familiar.

Amons though doesn't sound familiar.Yeah, the original name was Amon's now it's Sugar Shack I think. Locals still call it Amon's. His daughter and son in law have ran it for years. But yes it is the one attached to the gas station. Best glazed donuts ever, they are even better if they are a day old.
June 25, 201610 yr What's the early verdict on the new Top This! donut place in the middle of Fort Thomas? Had some yogurt from there with some toppings but haven't tried the donuts yet.

June 25, 201610 yr Still, my favorite is what's-her-name's bakery in Alexandria. Sandwiched between a couple of Speedways. Miss Shirley's Bakery Excellent!!!
June 26, 201610 yr What's the early verdict on the new Top This! donut place in the middle of Fort Thomas? Had some yogurt from there with some toppings but haven't tried the donuts yet. My daughter and her cousins from Verona didn't like the cake doughnuts. IT's a great concept but I question opening that window on 90 degree days. My wife's ice cream was melting as fast as she could eat it while sitting inside the place.
June 27, 201610 yr Do you remember the name of the place? RP - I think it is actually called "Top This!" Got a "milkshake" from there yesterday. Good size for a small and was $4 w/ a couple of "mix-ins." Still haven't tried the donuts. Novelty seems to be the "Chipotle" style add-ons and can see how this would appeal to kids. Various milk flavors "on tap" is a cute idea. Service seemed to be enthusiastic but that is to be expected with a new opening.
