Petrino's never been an elite recruiter as it is, so I don't think it's going to necessarily hurt him. He'll be competing against the next tier of schools for the next tier of players for the most part.

 

I don't know if any of it's true, but I read earlier that Petrino's meeting with Jurich lasted in excess of six hours and that much of it centered on who he would bring in as assistants. I can only assume that was necessary to combat those two glaring flaws, recruiting and keeping his players under control off the field. If Petrino can't set a good example, then hopefully he has several coordinators, position coaches and GAs to make sure everyone does what they need to be doing.

I'm absolutely sure recruiters of other schools will have tons to say about Petrino, they should. As for him only being at WKU a year, that will mean little to nothing to recruits, IMO. Expecting him to be there longer than three years was wishful thinking, to put it nicely. The first "big name" school that came calling, he was leaving. As for my hypothetical son, I would tell him to go where he felt most comfortable. If it were someone with Petrino's past, I'd tell my son to keep that in mind. Before that even came into question, however, I'd make sure my son was committing to a school, and not a coach. And most importantly, my kid will have learned his morals and life values from me and his mother, not his potential football coach...

 

Yeah you certainly hope so. But in the back of your mind, there is a little part of it telling you: what kind of people will my son be associated with and hanging around with at UL? Will Petrino be the kind of coach that reinforces what I've taught my son or will Petrino be the kind of coach that could be a bad influence on my 18 year old son living away from home and away from my guidance for the first time in his life and living in an environment that will provide a lot of temptations and opportunities for bad things to happen?

 

If you don't think that a whole lot of Moms and Dads will be having those thoughts, I think you are mistaken.

The one thing he can combat the mudslinging with is his record of developing less talented players into top talents. If you go into a living room and start telling mom and dad about how you can make Jr. an NFL prospect, and then point to guys like Douglas, Dumervil, Bush, etc. as proof, I really don't think they're going to care about your past transgressions.

I can't speak for other parents. I can only speak for my future self, and for my parents. They sent me to Louisville nine years ago with the same fears that you bring up. Yeah it wasn't a football coach, but 18 year old kids away from home at college are influenced by any and every body. They were confident enough in their parenting skills that I would make the right decisions. I feel as if somebody I'll have that same confidence.

Let us be honest as well. While some parents and kids will hesitate, a lot of these folks do not come from stellar backgrounds where morals are the foundation of their own upbringing. Petrino is providing for these folks a way out of these circumstances.

I'm supposed to go the UofL/Memphis basketball game with my dad tomorrow night. If Petrino is introduced to the fans at the game, it's going to be a really awkward moment between father and son when I stand up to applaud and my old man glares at me and tells me I'm an idiot.

I will admit Petrino was not my first choice but he was in my top 3. I said before as fans UL will have to take all the jabs.
