I want to post something that has been bothering me for quite some time.

 

I work as an environmental consultant. We have many clients. One of which is a high school in Ohio. I have been to this high school multiple times but not on any kind of regular basis. I don't report to any of the staff because all of my work is outside of the facilities but still on school grounds. Yet, everytime I go out of my way to "check in". It bothers me that I can walk into this facility and immediately be in the cafeteria...after walking through 2 doors. But noone questions me, noone looks at me and asks what my business is. Everytime I am there I think about how easy it would be for some crazed individual to enter and do whatever he wanted.

 

Unless we want to have an armed guard on site at all times, rebuild every single school or pay for major renovations then preventing something like this is not possible.

Like I said...major renovations. If glass isn't bulletproof or someone can punch through it well then it doesn't serve any purpose.

I'm really struggling with how to talk to my 5 and 6 year old on this tragedy. I know I have to, because at school on Monday, I'm sure there will be kids talking about it, and I want them to hear about it from me. I'm also struggling with how to talk to my students on Monday about it. I've never been an anti gun law advocate, but this really has caused me to really question myself on this issue. Just horrible sadness has overwhelmed me the past 24 hours. I've spent the time with my wife and kids, and wondering what if this was their school, or the school I teach at?

 

I have a 5-yr-old. He is my world. I have not watched any of the TV coverage. I just cannot. I'm a coward. But I am praying.

I understand what you're saying and I get it but what about churches, college campuses, or malls? I mean do you just plan on more people being armed at those places? This seems like the first time but it seems like more people are talking a out arming to protect and less a out disarming and taking away rights. It's interesting.

Instead of banning guns, maybe they should ban the meds.

Barbara had been taking Prozac for the previous two weeks. Kristine Marie Cushing, age 39, had been separated from her husband for several months. In October 1991, she took a .38-caliber pistol and shot and killed both of her children, Elizabeth age 8, and Stephanie Marie, age 4, while they lay sleeping in their beds, then shot herself, inflicting a non-fatal wound. Prosecutors stated that they “couldn’t find one iota of information to show that she was anything but a very giving, caring and sweet human being.” After a plea of insanity, she was committed to a mental institution. What made her snap? She had been taking Prozac

 

When I first heard about the Columbine High School massacre, my initial thought was, “Lord help us, were they taking Prozac?” Nine days later, it was reported that Eric Harris, one of the shooters, was taking Luvox, which, like Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil, belongs to the class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). In one out of every 25 children taking it, Luvox causes mania, “a psychosis characterized by exalted feelings, delusions of grandeur…and overproduction of ideas.”

These drugs cause side effects like insomnia, anxiety, and agitation. (From The New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center), and sometimes suicidal tendencies especially with fluoxetine (Prozac). These results have been found in adults and some young people, but the best course for prescribing SSRI's to the young seems to be extreme caution.

School Shootings Linked to Psychotropic Drugs Such as Ritalin, Luvox and Prozac

I had to turn the channel last night watching that father of one of the perished children talk about his little girl. They were showing pictures of that beautiful little girl and she looked so much like my 6yr old daughter I just about broke down.

Only thing that could have protected those people/kids was someone armed on the inside.

 

The guy had on a vest so whoever is armed better be good enough to fire a "head shot" or recognize that he needs to be hit in extremities and not miss or he/she will immediately be the next deceased. It's too simplistic an answer to believe that an armed teacher would have prevented this.

 

What protected them was all the adult teachers and staff that kept it from being worse than it was.

Not all anti-depressents are bad and even some of those you mentioned I have seen do wonders for the individual.

 

The real problem is when people ONLY use the meds and do not seek or acquire real therapy for dealing with the "issues" in their lives. The drugs are meant to be a supplement to regaining control of your mental state and emotional condition.

 

Like the idea that banning guns will be the difference, this idea about the meds is too simplistic as well.

I can't count the number of tears that I have shed since Friday. Yeaterday morning I watched a preist tell about being present when one of the families was informed that their little girl was one of the new angels. He said he was in control until her older brother, while trying to act bravely, said that he didn't know what he was going to do because his sister was his best friend and he now had no one to play with. The priest said that the little boy then began to shake and finally broke down. The priest said all he could do was join him because he had no words at that time.
