December 15, 201213 yr Several shooters in these mass killing have wore bulletproof vests. Why is their a public need for them? Never seen a deer shoot back. Never heard of anyone grabbing their gun and then strapping on the vest when someone breaks into their home. In a country based on personal freedom, why should something that protects you be 'banned'. If they all wore Nike shoes are they next?

I know I have to, because at school on Monday, I'm sure there will be kids talking about it, and I want them to hear about it from me. I'm also struggling with how to talk to my students on Monday about it. I've never been an anti gun law advocate, but this really has caused me to really question myself on this issue. Just horrible sadness has overwhelmed me the past 24 hours. I've spent the time with my wife and kids, and wondering what if this was their school, or the school I teach at?

There's no reason to broach a subject like this with a child that age, unless they come to you with questions. If they do have questions or concerns about it, try to reassure them that it's something that almost never happens and there's very little chance they will ever have to face a bad person like that. The older the child, the more you'll need to discuss it with them in realistic terms.
