June 15, 201214 yr This summer we will be touring the Midwest. Summerfesting in Milwaukee, lake fun at in-laws in Monticello, IN, and maybe a few days in Indy for Children's Museum and basketball. Good call on Summerfest! I went up several years back, caught a Brewers game, visited the Plank Road Brewery, and the Lakefront Beer Brewery all on a 5 day weekend. (I'd STRONGLY suggest the Lakefront Brewery tour if your ever in Milwaukee.) One of the best "short trips" I've ever taken. Nope. Honestly, all of my crowd is sorta motorcycle ignorant, so we didn't even know Harley-Davidson was headquartered in Milwaukee until we got there and just kinda found out. The Summerfest headliner music acts each night, the Brewers game, and the Miller Brewery were all the trip priorities when we headed up there, and we literally just happened upon the Lakefront Brewery, so of course we took the tour (how can you just pass by a brewery without at least trying to stick your head in for a look-see). Add to that the fact that the whole crowd was made up of mid-20's guys combined with the amount of beer we consumed at the aforementioned locales, and we weren't waking up until noon or 1:00pm. Thereby, we had very little time for any additional sightseeing :lol: What? You didn't go to the Domes? I lived in Milwaukee 30 years ago and haven't been back since 1992. I still miss the place. Mrs. S and I plan on heading up that way soon. She's never experienced Summerfest, spent a day bar hopping in South Milwaukee, seen a concert at Alpine Valley, or gone bike riding around Peewaukee Lake. I've never been on the Lake Freeway. 794 still ended as if it were a launch point to go over Lake Michigan, as seen in "The Blues Brothers", last time I was there. Someplace I'd like to go back to, is Houghton, Michigan for Winterfest in late February. Now, those folks know how to have fun in the cold.
June 15, 201214 yr I am going to Hanover Germany in two weeks (I go for business 5 - 6 times a year), but I am taking the wife this trip and staying a few extra days. We hope to take some castle and historical tours.
June 15, 201214 yr My girlfriend is living over in Wales right now and has to spend a fair amount of time in London. I've been there twice with her in the last 7 months as well. It's a VERY awesome place, but make sure to you keep your belongings secured - particularly your money, passport, and any other important docs that you have. Pickpockets are rampant, and when you add give or take a million Olympic tourists to that already crazily busy city, (which is hard to even freakin' fathom) it's gonna be a playground for pickpockets Two tips...buy a map that includes the Underground lines and stations to carry on you at all times, and visit the Tower of London (and make sure you tour it with one of the Beefeater tour guides - it's free with the price of admission). The Tower of London is easily one of the coolest single places to tour in London, plus it's only about a 4 minute walk from Tower Bridge. Thanks a bunch for the tips!!! The Tower of London is definitely part of our plan.

June 15, 201214 yr Also, if you have a free day, I'd strongly suggest a day trip to Bath. From London, it's about an hour and a half by train, and about 3 hours by bus - train tickets will probably be as little as £20 round trip, and bus fare is probably around half that. Bath is a very cool "Old World European" looking city situated on the River Avon, and it also has their famous Roman Baths (which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The Baths date back to the first century AD and are naturally fed by hotsprings. If you plan out a day-trip well, you could also fit in Salisbury along with Bath. Salisbury is about a 2-hour train ride from London, and it's less than an hour away from Bath by train. Salisbury is home to a very cool cathedral from the 13th century, and Stonehenge is just outside of town (and so is the lesser-known Woodhenge). We have planned a day trip to Stonehenge & now we'll try to add Bath! Again thanks so much for the great info!!!

My first Alpine Valley concert was in 1985, Bruce Springteen! Domes---more interesting to look at from the outside than the inside. South Milwaukee---how many bars can you go to in a span of 3 blocks? And how many of them have a PBR sign?

You cannot miss the 1st Wisconsin Building in the backround when the Pinto takes off at the end of the movie. The Domes are where you take your parents when they come to visit. My first AV concert was Rush in 1980, the last was The Marshall Tucker Band in 1981. Also, Alpine Valley is where I learned to ski. Great lodge there. What I'd give to be 22 again. Sigh! Depends on where you start, but the mean answer to the South Milwaukee question is 6, 3 have PBR signs, 2 have Miller High Life signs and the odd man out was usually Old Style or Special Export.

June 16, 201214 yr And here I thought that nobody had any resources to go on vacation! Sounds like a lot of great places are being visited. For the person on the East Coast - if you want to get away for a day, head a little ways south to Assateague Island. Way back in the day that was a favorite getaway spot. Cape May, New Jersey is another interesting place.
June 16, 201214 yr I think we are going to stay close to home, maybe Gatlinburg this summer. The last 3 summers we went to Cape Cod and Boston...I would definitely recommend it.
June 16, 201214 yr Next week, the wife and I head to San Antonio, Texas for 6 nights. In July, we will do a week in Disney World. If you haven't checked out zozi.com, I recommend it. We are getting our hotel for 6 nights in Orlando at a Wyndam Resort for $375. They literally have a deal with resorts from around the country and the world for that price. It is a great deal.
June 16, 201214 yr For week 1, last week, I had all kinds of big plans, all of which fell through when my car decided out-of-town travel was not an option. Instead, I ended up hitting the bars here in Nelson County and a few across the line in Marion County so I could make the best of a bad situation. We had a nice BBQ last Saturday. I'm thinking I'll enjoy my July week much better, with a trip down south on the agenda, and hopefully a day or two in NEKy to photo those covered bridges in there.
