June 14, 201214 yr You're making me want to watch Braveheart. That's pretty cool. Yeah, it was really awesome. One thing that was kinda crazy...beyond the fact that the castles were the better part of a thousand years old...was the when were touring one of the castles and we walked through the "winch room". That's the room where they have the equipment raise and lower the portcullis - that big heavy wood and iron gate that they close to block the opening at the drawbridge (you can see the top of it in one the picture below...the picture on the righthand side). Smack-dab between the winch and the portcullis, there was this opening in the floor that was covered over with a wooden frame (which you can see in the picture on the lefthand side). This opening was for use during an attack to pour boiling water or oil down onto anyone who attempted to get in. Un-freaking-real.

June 14, 201214 yr Wife is taking me to San Fran. is a few weeks to watch the Reds. It was my 40th birthday present from her. Neither of us have been west of the Rockies. I'm looking forward to some serious seafood. Then in the middle of July we are taking our 4 and 6 year old to Disneyworld, staying at one of the resorts. A great time will be had by all. You didn't tell me you were married to the BEST WOMAN EVER! SF is awesome but pack like it's going to be cold. Get out to the different sections of the city. Eat in Chinatown and North Beach (Italian section).
June 14, 201214 yr For those that want a nice summer beach vacation but aren't into a 12 hour drive consider the west coast of Michigan. We vaca'd jut north of Holland a few years ago in a cool lakehouse and it was outstanding. Hot days. Cool nights.
June 14, 201214 yr Like always, nowhere. My wife and I collect a multitude of vacation hours and comp time yet never use it. I guess they will line my coffin with it. We do have to fly to Spokane, WA en route to Cour D'Alene, ID in September as well as the Vegas marathon in December. But we are both missing the beach. Most of our trips and days off are tied with weekend getaways.
June 14, 201214 yr I'll be vacationing in lovely Eastern Kentucky for at least the next 12 months. With a baby due in October we don't have the sick days nor the money to travel at this point, and well once the baby gets here you can't vacation as soon as she's born anyways.
June 14, 201214 yr No vacation for us this year. We normall take a family vacation to Myrtle Beach but my brother-in-law and his wife are expecting in August so they are out. My other brother-in-law isn't able to either so our normal vacation is a no go. I plan on buying more fireworks than normal this year for the 4th so that's part of my vacation and the wife and I are talking about making the Boyle/Highlands game a weekend in Cincy so we'll probably hit Argosy up that weekend. Probably spend the night in Lex at some point also. We are definitely going on vacation to a beach somewhere next year. My wife and I become unbearable if we can't unwind at a beach at least once a year.
June 14, 201214 yr With Dad requiring, 24/7 care now, I don't see much of anything happening this year. We plan on Mrs. S going over to Orlando to look after the grandkids for a week next month. I'll have to take a week's vacation to stay with Pop. If we do an actual vacation, it will revolve, as usual, around college football.

Ride the trollies......Go to North Beach and walk around and find a hole in the wall Italian restaurant............Take the Alcatraz tour.........Rent a car and go to see the Redwoods at Muir Woods......See the sea lions at pier 39.......get a sundae at Girardelli's...... If you haven't found a hotel yet....The Westin St Francis is right on the trolley line and right across the street from Cheesecake Factory (on top of Macy's), it has great history....or try the Hotel Monaco....

I lived in Manistee for a year, which is 70 miles south of Traverse City, north of Holland. Absolutely beautiful area.....great outdoors recreation in the summer and fall....winter was very long though.

Nights were so cool we didnt have the AC on. Locals were complaining about the heat wave.
June 14, 201214 yr Looks like my familiy is going to go to Canada. Plan to spend a few days in Toronto and then head over to Montreal for a few days and then stop off at Niagra Falls on the way home. Anybody been to Canada before? Any recommendations? Hope you have your passports... I prefer the Canadian side of Niagara Falls myself, but since I don't have a passport, I won't be going anytime soon.
