Inside the 14th Region - Week 5

Recommended Posts

1.Knott County Central (9-3):

The Patriots had Christmas break off and won’t return until the WYMT Mountain Classic next week.

2.Perry County Central (9-5):

The Commodores took 3 out of 5 in the Traditional Bank Classic @ Lexington Catholic. The Commodores opened up with a 63-61 win to Lexington Sayre followed up by a 67-49 victory over Graves County. Perry Central would fall in the next game to Lexington Lafayette, 72-68. Perry Central would split their last two games in the Traditional Bank Classic, defeating George Rogers Clark 62-52 but falling to Paul Dunbar 56-54 in a thriller.

3.Cordia (3-4):

The Lions had Christmas off as well and won’t return until the WYMT Classic this coming week.

4.Letcher County Central (9-4):

The Cougars took 2/3 from the Mountain Schoolboy Classic @ Belfry and continue to pile up wins. Letcher Central picked up a big 76-44 win to start the tournament over Prestonsburg. Letcher Central would then move on to face Magoffin County in a game that would go down to the wire, a nail bitter of a game, whatever you wanna call it, before the Hornets pulled out a thrilling 61-59 victory, the Cougars would bounce back and pumble Trimble County 86-54 to close out the tournament.

5.Powell County (11-4):

The Pirates lost 4 of their starters from a year ago, where they only won 14 games, starting the new year (2017) the Pirates are rolling. Having won 11 overall and 8 of their last 10 games. Powell County would fall to Henderson County 49-44 in the championship game of the Red River Classic, which is held by Powell County. Unless something changes, the Pirates are on course to win 20 games this season. Could be more.

6.Estill County (9-4):

Estill County drops 2 in the Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament at Corbin. Estill County opened up the tournament with an exciting 55-52 overtime win over Barbourville. Estill County had trailed much of the game before making a comeback win in the 4th and overtime. Estill County would however, drop their next two games, losing 87-62 to the host team, Corbin and to Freedom High School out of Orlando Florida.

7.Hazard (7-5):

Hazard started the season off 2-0 before hitting a 4 game skid with losses to both #1 Knott Central and #2 Perry Central. The Bulldogs seem to have gotten things turned around for the good since their 4 straight losses with 5 straight wins to counter their 4 game skid streak. Hazard would fall 52-49 to Harlan County in the championship game of the Hyden Citizens Bank Classic @ Leslie County, ending their 5 game win streak but the Dawgs are diffently on the right track.

8.Leslie County (8-3):

2 out of the 3 losses for Leslie County came on their own home floor, in their own home tournament. The Eagles opened up the tournament hosting Garrard County and ended up falling to Garrard County 72-64. Leslie County would go on to face Lexington Tates Creek in what would be a thrilling game where the fans got an extra 4 minutes for their money but seen the Eagles lose another close on, 69-68 to Tates Creek. Leslie County would bounce back and pick up a 72-64 win over Clay County.

9.Buckhorn (8-7):

Since dropping 5 straight heading into the Pre-Christmas tournament @ Butler County, the Wildcats have won 6 straights including 2 different tournaments. The Wildcats won the Butler County Pre-Christmas tournament then followed that up by winning the Pine Mountain Classic @ Pineville, defeating teams such as; McCreary Central 75-64, Williamsburg 73-36 and Claibourne TN 62-53. Those 6 straight wins have the Wildcats rolling as they roll into the WYMT Mountain Classic next week.

10.Breathitt County (7-7):

One of the top 5 pre-season teams, Breathitt County has seem to fallen off the face of the earth, since Dec. 20th (Game; 80-70 loss @ Hazard), the Bobcats have went 1-5 with 3 straight losses. The Bobcats defeated Marina CA 63-61 in the opening round of the Traditional Bank Classic @ Lexington Catholic, before dropping 3 straight games, losing 77-46 to George Rogers Clark, 68-53 to Russellville and 81-71 to Sheldon Clark. That’s not a good way to enter the new year when it’s crunch time.

11.Wolfe County (5-7):

The Wolves took 2 out of 3 from the Red River Classic in Powell County, opening up with a 56-50 over Walton-Verona but falling 70-42 to Henderson county then bouncing back and crushing Boone County 98-71. The Wolves had been plagued with injury’s but have everyone back and healthy and looks to continue being dominate, like they did in the win against Boone County.

12.Jackson City (5-8):

The Tigers seem to have found their grove, winning 4 of their last 6 games including 2 wins down at the Pine Mountain Classic @ Pineville.

13.Lee County (2-8):

Lee County picked up their 2nd win on the season last Friday night, defeating Menifee County in a thriller, 75-73.

14.Owsley County (1-10):

Owsley County took to Jamestown TN (York Institute HS) to participate in the Southeastern Christmas Invitational and it wasn’t a good showing as the Owls would get blowed out in all 3 games, losing all 3 games by 15 or more points.

15.Jenkins (0-9):

Jenkins will travel to June Buchanan this coming Friday night, one of these two teams will get their first win on the season.

16.June Buchanan (0-10):

The Crusaders continue to struggle finding wins and their groove, will that change this coming Friday when they host #15 Jenkins?

17.Riverside Christian (1-12):

Despite being 1-12, the Rams have scored more points than both June Buchanan and Jenkins. The Rams have scored more points than #3 Cordia but the Lions have also played only 7 games…

tough schedule. Lions have lost 3 close games that they probably should have won. Playing a short schedule doesn't help with wins either.

I haven't had a chance to watch them yet. I guess I heard the talk about D1 prospects and everything and just expected them to be winning big. But their schedule does look pretty loaded. I didn't realize they were still playing a shortened schedule.

One of their best players, Nelson, didn't return for his senior season. If they had him they would be the number 1 team in the region. As it is right now Perry Central is number 1, particularly once the two big transfers from JBS get into the flow of things. They became eligible a couple of weeks ago after attaining a court injunction after being ruled ineligible by the KHSAA. The Commodores won the WYMT Classic this week, knocking Harlan County from the unbeaten ranks in the championship game.
