  1. Series History: First Meeting Series at Apollo: First Meeting These two teams meet for the first time, both coming in at 1-0 on the season. Apollo knocked off Muhlenberg County 35-14 while everyone knows how South Warren dismantled John Hardin. What will the South Warren Spartans do for an encore? Does Apollo have any chance?
  2. Series History: Warren Central leads 8-6 Series at Western Kentucky University: First Meeting This game was originally due to be at Warren Central, but with renovations ongoing, they stepped up to the site of the state finals, Western Kentucky University. Each team now has intentions on beginning and ending their season at the same place. Last year Owensboro won a nailbiter 28-26 at Warren Central, surviving a late two point conversion attempt in a game played in the face of driving wind. The teams have alternated wins in their last five meetings, who takes this one?
  3. Series History: Owensboro Leads 38-31-2 Series at Bowling Green: Series Tied 18-18-1 The Purples and Red Devils renew one of the oldest rivalries in the state, with 71 meetings dating back to 1932. This will be the seventh consecutive year the teams will play, something that is increasingly hard to find for the Purples out of district. The Purples have won 5 consecutive against Owensboro, last losing in the 2008 playoffs. That was their last loss to Owensboro at home as well. The teams both enter unbeaten, the Purples at 2-0 while Owensboro is 3-0. This is the first game for the Devils outside of their City-County schedule, where they swept their fellow Daviess County teams to take that title. The Purples of course are on a 32 game winning streak and added another marquee win with their third consecutive win over St. Xavier. That game was perhaps not even as close as the 39-25 final would make it seem. Last year the Purples slammed Owensboro 31-3 at El Donaldson Stadium.
  4. Series History: Warren Central leads 7-5 Series at Owensboro: Owensboro leads 5-2 Owensboro has won three of the last four meetings between the two schools, but they have met only once since 2000. All of Owensboro's wins over Warren Central have come at Rash Stadium. Warren Central has not won at Rash since a 28-10 decision in 1997. Warren Central and Owensboro have not met since the 2008 playoffs. At the time, that was a matchup of two teams going in very different directions. The Dragons were stumbling to the end of a very ugly 3-8 campaign, still their worst showing since 1995. If not for the grace of six classes, it would have almost certainly been their first missed playoffs since 1998. Meanwhile Owensboro had won a region title the year before, went on to defeat Bowling Green in the second round to advance to their region runner-up finish in 2008, and appeared to be trending upward. While Owensboro has been respectable in the interim, last year was their first trip back to the region finals since 2008, while Warren Central has now played for three straight region titles, albeit winning none. Yet this year very much resembles the makeup of that 2008 game, though Central hasn't cratered as bad as that 2008 team did. Owensboro is riding relatively high. They're 5-1 with their only loss being an understandable one to Bowling Green. They are favorites in every remaining game with the possible exception of their closer against Henderson County. They are considered the favorite to win their 4A region. Meanwhile Warren Central has gotten out to only a 3-3 start, having lost to every good team and beaten every bad team they've seen so far. Their three remaining games following this one are Bowling Green, Logan County, and Highlands. The first and third are almost literal guarantees to be losses, the middle an almost literal guaranteed win. That makes this game against Owensboro the swing game between a 4-6 or 5-5 finish, in either case their worst finish since 2008. For the Dragons it's an exercise in maintaining momentum and continuing to improve, and perhaps a mental game in finding out if they can beat a team that isn't down on its luck. For Owensboro it's continuing to defend their home turf where only Bowling Green has won in the last 1.5 seasons and maintaining their own strong momentum.
  5. Series History: Warren Central leads 8-5 Series at Owensboro: Warren Central leads 5-0 These teams have alternated wins in the last four meetings, and Warren Central has not won two consecutive over the Red Devils since taking three straight from 1996-1998. This is the first meeting between the two at Warren Central since 2000, a classic 17-14 OT victory for the Dragons that would ultimately be the key victory in their district championship campaign that season. Aiding the Dragons in their attempt to win again is that this game will be played at Dragon Stadium, where they have never lost to Owensboro. Most of the games have been close affairs with three of the five decided by 7 points or less. This is a rematch of last year's perhaps surprising victory for Warren Central in Rash Stadium. At the time the Dragons were merely 3-3 while the Devils were 5-1 with only a loss to Bowling Green holding them back. But the Dragons never trailed in the game, which was a defensive struggle for most of the time. Warren Central got on the board first in the second quarter, tacking on another score late in the third, before a flurry in the 4th Quarter saw a kickoff return and pick six allow the Dragons to put it away with a 28-7 victory. This year has a more even look on paper coming in, but still sees the Red Devils as potentially the favorite. While the blemish on Central's record came to a very, very good DeSales team in ugly, ugly fashion, Owensboro nearly shocked the state in going toe to toe with Bowling Green before faltering late. That loss did more than any win to cement the reputation of Owenboro, which features an incredibly hard to defend triple option attack. This game shapes up to be the last potential loss before the postseason for Owensboro. Win it, and they'll almost certainly go 9-1. For the Dragons it is much the opposite. More and more, the last three games are appearing to be set in stone the way they were last year - loss (BG), win (Logan Co.), loss (Highlands). This is likely their last swing game before the playoffs, and certainly their last chance to improve before welcoming Bowling Green in two weeks. The Dragons have won six consecutive at home and haven't lost there to a team that didn't play for or win a state title since 2008. Can they keep it alive?

  8. Warren Central overcomes a 10 point deficit on two separate occasions to force overtime, and then scores following a turnover with 10 seconds remaining in OT to win the game. The two teams shot a combined 60% from the field in an up and down game. That included a combined 13/27 shooting from behind the arc. About the only thing they didn't do well was shoot free throws. Central was 2/7 from the line, Owensboro was 7/14. Central was led by Carver who had 21 points, and Nathaniel Walker who had 17 points aided by five three pointers. It was the fifth straight victory in the series for Warren Central, who trail the overall series 13-8. The Devils last defeated Warren Central in 2000. This was also the first OT game of the series. The Dragons haven't lost an OT game since dropping an 81-75 decision in 2007 to Warren East.
  9. Series History: Warren Central leads 14-9 Series at Warren Central: Warren Central leads 7-4 Playoff Meetings: 11/10/1989 - at Warren Central 39 Christian County 12 11/10/1990 - at Warren Central 28 Christian County 14 11/12/2004 - Warren Central 30 at Christian County 24 3OT 11/18/2005 - at Warren Central 36 Christian County 35 11/13/2009 - at Christian County 13 Warren Central 7 11/19/2010 - Christian County 27 at Warren Central 26 OT 11/11/2011 - Warren Central 49 at Christian County 0 Once a seemingly annual meeting in the playoffs (to go along with annual meetings in the regular season), this is the first matchup of the Dragons and Colonels since their last playoff meeting three seasons ago. In that game Warren Central unloaded years of frustration on the Colonels to advance to the region finals. The teams have been up and down since that meeting, and neither enter this meeting at the peak of their game. Christian County has fallen in three consecutive games while the Dragons lost three of four. The Colonels will be the second straight air attack team to visit Dragon Stadium. Will this one go better than the last?
