I read in the preseason that Warren Central returned most of their "D" from last year. I thought they had one of the best defenses Owensboro faced last season.

Central returned most of the personnel who played on the D last year, but they're not all necessarily on defense this time around or in the same spots in almost all cases. They had only 3 seniors starting on defense in the game last season, graduating Byron Carver, Robert Edwards, and Rondell Green. Carver (#7) and Green (#6) in particular were studs, so their loss is still felt. But of the others that played on D in that game, two do not play defense anymore. Kodie Cardwell (#57, DE) is back on the offensive line where he began the season last year and Colin Burnam (#44, MLB) is the starting RB for the Dragons. Additionally LaDarius Mitchell (#15, CB) has bounced back and forth, making his greatest contributions as a WR. I don't believe he played D at all last game. So of guys remaining on D from last year, you have Walker (5) & Peele (34) in the secondary, Barber (17) in the linebacking corps, and Jewell (54 last year, 4 this year) and Smith (22) have swapped spots, with Jewell moving to LB and Smith to DT.

In general, Central is rotating guys a lot more than they have in the entire Rogers era and probably quite a bit before it, trying to build more depth and keep guys fresh. But as it stands today, they basically have a platoon system going for most players, and all starters.

Love seeing the Purples pick against WC!

Btw, you need to come over to BG and watch Vito Jr.

I know. I keep hearing about how great of a season he is having. I can't wait to see him play.

I did now. :lol2:

I think Owensboro will give it a good shot and lighting may strike me but I may hope for a Dragons win to make October 17 a little more hyped than it already is. If Central can pull out the win the folks on Morgantown Road will be riding pretty high on the cross town rivalry game.

By the way, I have seen Vito, Jr. play and he is the real deal. I honestly believe that he would start varsity on any team in the area, including BG. He is real deal.

If Owensboro is without James, I like Central's chances.

Did WC scrimmage Madisonville? I'm hearing from a couple friends in that area OHS will win. Not sure I share that optimism though.

Owensboro suffered a couple huge losses in the Madisonville game. The word is leading rusher TJ James had a concussion. He was unable to finish the game last week. Then of course Phillips broke his arm. Phillips is a 3 year starter at RB/S/KR and he's been a big part of Owensboro's success since he's been on varsity. He rushed for 582 yards on 77 carries last year with 10 TD's. (7.6 yards per rush.) He also had 20 catches for 262 yards and 5 TD's. (20+ yards per catch.) On defense he was the 3rd leading tackler with 2 INT's. This year he's rushed 31 times for 191 yards. (6+ yards per rush.) And he also has 7 catches for 187 yards. (27 yards per catch.) On defense this year he has 6 pass break ups and 2 INT's. He's scored 5 total TD's. He will be very very hard to replace. As far as the game with Warren Central goes....I'll be pulling for the Red Devils but I don't think they win this game without James and Phillips....history says it more then likely wouldn't happen with them....

I am curious - does Owensboro have many players going both ways (like Phillips)? How about Warren Central? Do they??

If Owensboro is without James, I like Central's chances.

Owensboro is also without their fine safety that goes both ways as a WR. That same WR caught a bomb just before half against BG and it was a really athletic catch.

If I could redo my prediction from above I would now give the Dragons the 1 point edge. Lot for Owensboro to overcome (on the road, injuries, is it calling for rain in BG - it is here, but maybe just in the morning).

No. The closest we have to a means of comparison through Madisonville is that Madisonville beat Greenwood 13-9 to open the year, who Central just beat 39-21. I have my doubts that would be an accurate comparison at all.
