I have tried to explain this feeling to countless young men over the years. It is definitely one of those things you don't appreciate until it is gone. I played in college at Division II school, and I cherish the experience, but nothing compares to the feeling you get running on to the field on a Friday evening in the fall playing with your friends and classmates. The bonds we made still last all these years later! I again will borrow and modify a quote from Lou Holtz. If you played on Friday nights, no explanation is necessary, if you didn't no explanation will suffice! I too get choked up everytime I see the Boys of Fall video. I realized that I am still part of the song however, I used to be one of the boys of fall, now I am just an old man who thinks he knows it all!

I also thought the QB from Campbell was impressive, he is a very hard nosed kid. The biggest difference I saw was up front. With the exception of a few plays here and there, the O and D lines of Campbell dominated the lines of Ryle. Sorry to hear the starting QB had a concussion, I hope everything turns out OK for him.

I watched the game on TBNK, (nice job by the way). Several things stood out to me. I love the flexibility and the durability of Turf fields, but there was something great about seeing clouds of dust billowing from the field, and seeing kids jersey's turning brown from the combination of the dust and the perspiration. Partly because of the field conditions (see above) and partly because of the style of offense that Bourbon ran ( toe-toe line splits, wing T) but watching the game looked like a 1960's replay. If the game would have been broadcast in black and white, I would have bet on it. Final observation is that the Scrugg's kid can flat out FLY! He's not real big in stature, but his speed makes him a game changer.

How about the freshman team, how many kids are on that squad?

Agreed, but the way they have played Beechwood the past two years, I think it is great measuring stick for Brossart. I think it is a great game for Brossart to play. It's a quality local 2a school, who has athletes that Brossart can/should be able to compete with. The depth issue, I'm not sure Brossart can compete with yet, but other than that its a great barometer for the Mustang program.

According to some of the sites Brossart will be moved up to 2A is that true? If it is the case Brossart will have a new hurdle in its way. If they are now in district with NewCath, Holy Cross, Newport and Lloyd, they will have to take another leap to stay moving in positive direction. I think the Holy Cross game later this year will be an interesting measuring stick for the Mustangs.

Does the 25 include the Frosh team as well?

Are the CovCath Team, coaches and fans satisfied with the way they played (especially the 1st half)? NO Are all of the above happy with the victory ? YES Is Beechwood a great Football team? NO Are they tough hard nosed kids who fight to the end? YES Is either team where they need to be compared to the respective schools expectations? NO Can and will both teams take positives away from this game to build on, I believe so. I think Beechwood proved to themselves they can throw the ball effectively, and that they aren't that far away from being legitimate contender in 1A. Very gutsy team, that refused to give up. CovCath proved they can win even if their offense isn't having its best day. They also learned how a few stupid penalties can quickly change a 2 score margin into a nail biter. They need to play nearly flawless football to have the type of season they will be satisfied with.

How is the Freshman team doing? What kind of numbers do they have? I know that they started a middle school program this year, not sure what that has done to the Lions, but technically it should get more kids playing football and hopefully improving their numbers.

I agree this was a huge play in the game. I was thrilled to see the Colonels use their go to guy in this situation. Nine times out of 10 he will step up and make the play. I think one other play may have had a bigger impact on the overall game, and that was the fake punt in the 1st half. At the time Covcath was up 7-0, had just held he tigers to an apparent 3 and out. In a very gutsy call Beechwood executes a 4th and 12? fake punt from their own 48. (not positive of the exact location). I felt this was a huge momentum changer. Had the CovCath Defenders made the open field tackles (nice run by the kicker by the way) I have to think that MO stays with he Colonels, and perhaps they go up 2 scores. I know we wil never know for sure, but my gut tells me that play changed the way the rest of the 1st half was played.

I am assuming the "almost" is geared for NCC. I think Chad is a very good football player, but I still think he will have difficulty running over Kelly or Cain or Daunt or Geisler etc. I am glad to see HC have the success, but I think they are still a distant 2nd in NKY 2a.

Actually that was Alex Cosby who made the strip. He secured the tackle, ripped the ball out and recovered. He also caused a Vocke fumble and had a 1st half pick. Great game by Cosby he and the other corner came up HUGE in the 2nd half!

Anyone know if this game was played last night, and if so what was the outcome?

My guess that it is Geisler and the team is Ryle!

I know he worked a ton with Coach Hobbs starting last spring. Because the other QB's played baseball, Matt literally had the coach to himself for a large portion of the spring and summer.

I love the way the kid plays the game. I think he is an exceptional athlete, but I also think that he is a stretch as a D1 QB. I am sure part of it is the offense that is run at Ryle, but he struggles with accuracy. He's got the arm strength no question and definitely the moxy, but what I have seen so far leaves me thinking that safety might be a better future position for the young man. The colleges may see the potential, and under the right system he may blossom into an outstanding college qb. However, right now I think he would make a better Safety at the next level.

I haven't seen Peterson in person by I have heard he is very good. I can tell you from the one's I have seen (Ryle, Covcath, Dixie, Highlands,Sk, Beechwood,Campbell, NewCath, Scott and Bellevue) Connelly stands out in the crowd, both physicall and figuratively. His production is pretty amazing he is averaging a TD every 3 catches. I say throw more his way! I have also been impressed by Gold as route runner, and Leonard for his tenacity.

NewCath was very impressive. I knew after watching the Dixie game that this team would be a resiliant never say die type of team. I didn't realize until watching the Ryle game how good the O and D-lines were. Even though I never felt Ryle was in jeopardy of losing, I was really surprised that it was NewCath's O and D-line taking control of the LOS in the 4th quarter. Ryle does have a passing game, but it is only effective as play action. I don't understand why they don't use Mullins more as a receiver. I am not saying he shouldn't be the fullback, because he is quite effective as both a runner and blocker. However, I think using him in the slot or motioning him wide more would add a dimension that Ryle does not have. It's one thing to be able to throw play action effectively when a team is expecting the run, it's another to be able to throw when then situation obviously calls for it. It will be interesting to see what Ryle does this week against Dixie. I think Dixie's achilles heal is their pass defense.

I am surprised this game was this close. I really thought the Camels would take out their week #1 frustrations on the Colonels. Who were the big guns for Dixie? They had a very nice return game against Ryle, were they successful in the portion of their game again?

I think Dixie will be very successful running the ball. The key will be if they can keep away from the big negative yardage plays. If they can keep from having those I think Conner will have a hard time stopping the Pike/Bruns combo of runners. If Dixie has to throw it over 30 times, it is not good news for the Colonels. I agree that their top 3 receivers are very good, but the pass defense is somewhat suspect. If they are chucking it 30 times, it tells me that Conner is also having great success on the offensive side. My guess is that Dixie does not want a shoot out type of game. They would be much better served by a run based game that shortens the game, and keeps the defense off of the field as much as possible.

I don't see this game being close. I am not going to say the Cooper names the score, but I will be surprised if it is not at least a 3 TD margin by the end of the 3rd quarter.

I was a doubter as well, but his speed has improved significantly. He isn't a SEC type back, but I have very little doubt that he could play at a MAC school. In fact if he continues to improve I think he will be hearing from schools all over the midwest.

They better get prepared because if the posted re-alignment is correct they will be playing in 2a against NCC, Newport, Lloyd and Holy Cross. I commend the way they have quickly built the program to respectability. But I agree for them to take to the next level they will have to schedule at a different level as well.

That was a very physical football game on Friday night. I am sure that game two will be an intense one as well.

I know I am late to the discussion and it may have been talked about previously, but I think Ryle hit the Panic button a little early. I say that because after the fumble on the 1st play of the 2nd half, the next 3 posessions Ryle started their series attempting to pass. The result was they end up in 2nd and 10 or more, and were behind the 8 ball. Highland offense then played ball control for good portion of the 2nd half. By the time Ryle went back to starting their series by running the ball they were down 2 scores. Even then they were having some success moving the ball, but ended two of their drives with TO's. I am not saying that Ryle could or would have won the game, I think the best team won. However, I think once Ryle got down early in the 2nd half, they got away from their bread and butter. I was shocked Elliot didn't have another 8 - 10 touches in the 2nd half.
