Fridays - 30 Years Later

Featured Replies

Surely I'm not the only one that quickly goes back 30 years to that feeling on Fridays during football season, right? Weird how it all comes back on that particular day. I was far from a key component on a very good team but ,fortunately, I did start. I can probably tell you the final score of almost every game that year.

I was in my car this morning waiting on my chiropractor and Kenny Chesney's "Boys of Fall" came on the radio. The lyrics just nail the feeling/atmosphere/environment of Fridays in the fall. I actually teared up - no lie. When you're right in the middle of it you can't appreciate it.

30 years later? You certainly do.

Boy, I express your sentiments also Clyde. Nothing like Friday Night Lights. My son and I were listening to that song the other day and wondered how many football banquets will use this song for their year end slide shows. I am going to go out on a limb and say a bunch. Great video and great song. 30 years? Wow, time flies, but fortunately we are the pilot.

Its only been 25 years for me, but I know what you mean. Being the father of three girls I decided about ten years ago the only way that I would find my way back to the grid iron was to get into officiating. Every Friday night in the fall for the past nine years I get that feeling in my stomach the same way that I did when I played back in the 80's. I love the Fall.

A CCH mom put one together that was very good.

Clyde, I share your thoughts on the matter. For me, and many people I know, there is something about football season that brings back those feelings. No one feels those things during other sports seasons, but football is different. I get just as hyped up and nervous as the players do. In fact, our QB told me the other day that he wished he could put my intensity in my son's body.

I have tried to explain this feeling to countless young men over the years. It is definitely one of those things you don't appreciate until it is gone. I played in college at Division II school, and I cherish the experience, but nothing compares to the feeling you get running on to the field on a Friday evening in the fall playing with your friends and classmates. The bonds we made still last all these years later!

I again will borrow and modify a quote from Lou Holtz. If you played on Friday nights, no explanation is necessary, if you didn't no explanation will suffice!

I too get choked up everytime I see the Boys of Fall video.

I realized that I am still part of the song however, I used to be one of the boys of fall, now I am just an old man who thinks he knows it all!

It certainly is hard to explain.

It certainly is hard to explain.

I've learned: If you have to explain it, they won't understand.

My reaction is to go up to each and every of my son's varsity teammates, look them dead in the eye with a huge grin and with as much passion as I can convey, simply say to them , YOU GET TO PLAY FOOTBALL TONIGHT.

It's sad that previous generations are never are able to convey just how quickly it's goes by.

Maybe that's why we become so passionate watching the young kids getting their taste.

We know how short lived it will be but fortunately they do not.

Absolutely Clyde. I agree 100%.

Extremely well put. Insert your sport of choice here - this is a fleeting time. Maybe it's fortunate that the kids really don't realize it. They live for the moment, not realizing how quickly it will pass.

I vividly remember a former player who had graduated a few years before me returning & speaking to our team in the cafeteria right before the season was about to start. It wasn't football, but he tried to explain how much you'd miss the camaraderie & rush that you'd get when you run out onto the floor, field, etc. It was impossible to understand then, but I know exactly what he was talking about now.

Good times, good times indeed.

Been 35 years. I get goose bumps reading your posts.

25 years ago, after a warm up drill and just before kickoff, with sweat streaming down my face, my father looked me in the face as I looked at him through my facemask and said "enjoy every moment son, this does not last forever." I will never forget that. I am very blessed and fortunate to have been able to watch my son on Friday nights. I told him and many of his teammates the same thing my father told me. My son and several of his friends are freshman at the next level. They have all said, "there is nothing like playing on Friday nights!"

That is exactly how I feel !!
