After Newport Central Catholic's loss to Ryle...

Featured Replies

do you still think they are the favorite to win 2A?

I do.

And if you don't think they are the favorite, who is the favorite to win 2A?

Despite the loss to Ryle last night, Newcath still did a lot of things well and should be considered the 2A favorite. There isn't anyone else in 2A that would play Ryle as close as they did last night.

Newcath was a dropped pass away from making the game 14-14 in the second quarter and making it a whole different game. Instead, they turned in over on downs the next play inside Ryle's 10 and Ryle would go down to score to make it a 20 or 21-7 game.

Newcath is very tough with Kelly, Cain, Hightchew, Bhola, and #18. (Always forget his name)

FTC and Danville did nothing to help their cases that is forsure. I think they are the favorite but not sure if they are a big favorite. I think a few more weeks will tell us more about who are contenders and pretenders.

Considering that it was 2A vs 6A, I think the Breds have to be seen as at least a top four team. No one in the district will give them much, and I fully expect to see them in Bowling Green in December, but anything can happen there.

I thought NCC looked very solid. No one up here will push them, that's for sure. They didn't seem to make much use of their wideouts in the passing game - most of their passes were short tosses over the middle. Not that theyll necessarily need it, but I did think their QB's arm would be a little stronger. They have some absolute hosses on the lines and they do more than just take up space - nice players.

I am a Ryle backer and I am very impressed with NCC. They play very hard, they are very physical and have some great athletes playing throughout their line up. I think they would have to be as good as any 2A team out there and may very well be the favorite.

The only thing that I could see hurting the Breds is their lack of depth. If Kelly, Cain, or Hightchew go down, they could be in serious trouble.

That's true but that's true for all the 2A schools, don't you think?

NewCath has the ability to be very, very good. They can go spread w/ three receivers 6'2 and taller. They can pound the ball with Kelly and Cain behind a pretty big O-Line. Hitchew is a double threat at QB. Hayes provides another big play threat from wingback. They are still learning a completely new offense as could be seen by the missed pitches Friday night when they ran the option. By the end of the year they'll create a lot of match-up issues with all the motion different formations that they use.

For someone who isn't very familiar with Newport Central Catholic beyond seeing them several times in the state finals, has much changed with their offensive and defensive game plans with the new coach? I know the staff is pretty similar, so I'm guessing not. Just curious.

I would think Monroe Co and NCC would be right there. Murray has alot of talent, but, hasn't exactly played like a Top 5 team, thus far, even though they're unbeaten. PBurg would also have to be considered from the eastside. I would have put Desales and Danville in there until there less than impressive performances against Holy Cross and Somerset last week. Truthfully, I don't think there really is a true favorite who's head and shoulders above the rest. I think there's 6 or 7 teams capable of being there and beating any of the others and also losing to any of the others.

They go under center 75% of the time now. They utilize two backs and a tight end more w/ a wing. Eddie took a lot of Georgetown's offense and kept a little from the past few years where they were spread out of the shotgun.

I think NCC is the best right now, But if Danville can get thier offense clicking, they will be a stong State contender come playoff time, with out the fumbles last friday night I think the score could have been 21-13 Somerset, instead of 38-13. Danville has some work to do but thay have time and a lot of up-side. From everything I heard Somerst will be in the 3A championship again. The Ads just need to stay agressive, shut down the run, and force teams to throw the ball. The passing game gets more difficult to execute in November and December. If I remember correctly there were a lot of interceptions last year in the Championship games.

My thoughts exactly. If they can stay healthy and keep there heads where they're at right now, there's not much chance for anyone in 2A to knock them off.
