First half was really strong by SK as they led 40-19. SK expaned the lead to 25 in the third. 4 players in double figures led by Tolliver with mid-20's, Wainscott, L. Figgins and Smith. I thought it was a very nice effort. Congrats Lady Pioneers. I don't think anyone is counting out the Rockets in their coach's final season.

I am rooting for SK but I think this game will be close. I am not sure of the basis of the 20+ point SK prediction but New Cath recently just beat Southwestern (Pulaski County) in the Lex Cath tourney and a team from West VA that was supposedly very good. I say home court gives SK the W.

In my opinion, it has to do with more than today's insurance climate. Packing black powder into an antique and firing it off is not safe and this certainly isn't the first accident involving a historic cannon. Highlands also discharges a black powder gun at their soccer games. Not sure about that either. I have a friend who played football in the late 70's/early 80's, who told me long before this accident, that his ears were damaged when the Highlands cannon went off when he was to close to it. (I have never seen it but I guess it was relocated at some point?) Lexington Lafayette fires off a 40mm gun after touchdowns but it is shooting off something like 10 gauge shotgun shell blanks. Memorialize the cannon but don't fire it any longer.

They were singing it as they loaded him into the ambulance. It was disturbing.

On the other hand, SK has been on the road every week and had as big or bigger crowd than every place they have gone. It is really neat seeing the community spirit come alive. Good stuff. Highlands is likely the #1 team but looking at the poll, it would appear that only 9 coaches voted. When you look at the teams that got votes, you see Owen in the girls and Deming in the boys. I wonder how many coaches were polled and what geographic area does it cover? The only thing you can tell for certain is that it covers 3 regions. Just off the top of my head, I can name 20+ schools in Boone, Kenton and Campbell and I am sure that I am missing some. Not that it is a big deal but my point is the sample size does not appear to be very big. (The boys wasn't much different) The Post Polls used to have a ton of coaches that voted. My guess is the teams at the top are pretty accurate but the mid to latter part of the list has some variability.

Wow, it is hard to believe that SK is playing football past Thanksgiving. To me, that is getting over a hump. Congrats to Coach M, his staff and players. It was a lot of fun watching the two best skill position players in the area in Simpson and West. It is kind of scary to say but I almost think Simpson seems to be getting better as the season goes on. Congrats to Conner for turning your program around as well and good luck Pioneers next week.

He may have as many defensive highlights as offensive ones and is probably as fun to watch on defense as he is on offense. Man he hits hard. SK isn't accustomed to that level of play and it is really neat to watch. Good pic of him at http://www.skpioneers.blogspot.com Overall, I thought SK hit particularly hard last night on defense causing the fumbles which was another key.

So what are the rankings? I guess the top 3 are probably: 1. SK 2. Anderson 3. Shelby After that, it gets trickier than last year and it is anyone's guess after above; maybe I am wrong. This can potentially be a very good SK team if they can keep everyone healthy.

Any reports on how the team has looked this summer?

I could be wrong but best I can remember, the year was 1992 and the winner was Dixie. From what I can tell, Dixie played Warren East in round one of the state tourney? I know SK has a banner hanging in the gym that I have seen before that details the season. I know they were NKAC big school division champs but that is all I remember. Also, Dixie has a picture hanging of the team in their awards area that beat SK. Trey Grayson's sister played on the team if memory serves me right? SK did have some good years and tradition before the 1 win season dark ages.

Congratulations to the SK team, Coach Stowers and his staff! Have a great time and represent No Ky and your region. I hope your team is well supported down state since it took so long to get there! It is hard to believe as many good teams that they have had over the years that this is the first time that they are headed to state. The late 70's/early 80's with Egglestons, Simpson; late 80's with Brosky and Jackson; the early 90's with a team that won the NKAC and was upset in the regional final by Dixie and the team two years ago that lost a 10 point lead in the fourth to Shelby County.
