I would be surprised if the cannon is ever fired on school grounds or at a school function again. There is too much liability for the school to be responsible for.

Not sure what the insurance company will do but I truly hope the cannon stays put. One freak accident in 40 years should not silence the cannon.

I don't understand why they can't have a cannon that shoots off blanks or maybe have something that replicates the sound of a cannon.

Sad day if the cannon is removed. I know the boys always got a rush when it went off.

Somethings are more important than sound effects for a football game. I trust the HHS administration will do the right thing.

That maybe the best idea. Keep the atmosphere but lose the danger.

It would be very sad if another tradition had to go by the wayside due to an accident. It's unfortunate that in our society, it's no longer considered acceptable for people to, of their own free will, accept risks. We are driven by the fact of our lawsuit-happy society.

 

I hope they are able to keep the cannon - I remember how sad it was when the University of Louisville mothballed its cannon after an unfortunate accident. Careful training and proper safety procedures have kept HHS from having many accidents...it's not as if this has been a constant occurrence. The cannon crew, should, however, be required to sign a legally-binding release form pledging not to sue the school system if they are injured while operating the cannon. Unfortunately, a good lawyer often can find ways around such waivers...

Kind of reminds me of the Texas A&M bonfire collapse in 1999. Everyone was weighing in on what should be done. Should the 90 year tradition continue? Should the school allow it? Etc. The school has not sanctioned a bonfire since that collapse that killed 12 people. And several weeks ago, the school shelled out $2.1 million to settle with the families.

 

The two differences here is that the cannon is not school owned or school sanctioned whereas the bonfire was. That leads me to believe the school will lean more toward removing the cannon than keeping it because of liability issues.

I think the Highlands administration will pull the cannon. I know many Highlands fans are appalled to the thought... And thats understandable. You don't want to get rid of a tradition due to an accident. And I'm sure the injured party would probably agree to keep the canon (Not sure though). But legalities outway tradition nowdays. Leatherneck would probably be the man to ask as far as legalities go... But IMO I think the cannon will be out the door come next footballs season.
