Russell takes a beating at the hands of Miles Simpson and Simon Kenton.

Russell fumbled the ball 4 times and could not score in the red zone. It could be a long night against Mason next Friday.

I listened on the radio tonight. It sounded like Simon Kenton was just the far superior team. That was apparently a good move to a new quarterback for the Pioneers as well. I look forward to some analysis from some people who were there in person.

I listened as well. Russell can't tackle.

Russell has a good team, but I kinda figured they were in over their heads in this one. I think they'll biunce back and pull in the win over Mason County in a tough battle.

Simon Kenton was the better team tonight.Miles had another big game had a 80 yard touchdown run on a broken play.Russell had to many turnovers.I like Lawrence as the new QB.Big game against Campbell County next week!!!

It sounded like the 80 yard run was the backbreaker. The game got out of hand after that. Some random thoughts:

 

Really when looking at the strength of the teams that Simon Kenton competes with compared to Russell, it is not so amazing that Russell got blown out this year...it is amazing that Russell had a chance to beat Simon Kenton last year!

 

Russell hasn't done well this year when playing teams who have faced and been beaten by far superior competition the week before. Ashland lost to Ironton, OH the week before playing Russell at Ashland. Russell played West Carter the week before playing that game. Russell's starters probably got to play about half of that game. Simon Kenton lost to Boone County last week. Russell played Lewis County last week. Russell's starters got to play about a quarter and a half of that game.

 

By the way, james-russell, I think Russell's playoff schedule (should they beat Mason) will look like this: home against Magoffin County in the 1st round, home against Sheldon Clark in the 2nd round, at Belfry in the 3rd round, home against Breathitt County in the 4th round, and then the state championship against Louisville Central. That is, of course, presuming they have an incredible October/November turnaround.

SK had a 19-7 lead in the 2nd quarter, and Russell was on the move. I believe #38 took one around the right end and had a chance to score but Simpson put a lick on him on the 2 yard line. SK then had a nice goal line stand to hold the Devils scoreless. Russell scored again in the 3rd to pull within 6, SK then took over on the 20 and that's when they pitched to Simpson around the right end, he then changed direction, ran across the field and turned it on for an 80 yard TD. That was the turning point, I think Russell had the momentum after cutting it down to six but the Simpson TD had to be deflating. I believe SK recovered a fumble on their next possession, and that was pretty much the game. Lawrence played QB for most of the game, and I thought did a good job, Bustle played TE and had a few catches, but Lawrence can make some serious plays with his feet. One thing is certain, with Lawrence and Bustle on the field at once they are a more talented offense.

 

Huge game next week, it's make or break and I hope the kids from SK are ready for the test.

That scenario assumes Russell beats Mason County, Belfry beats Sheldon Clark, Russell wins their playoff games, and the rest of the favorites win in the playoffs. I got the info off of the KHSAA website. I realize the most likely scenario is Breathitt playing at Belfry for the right to play Louisville Central...but one can dream. Let me know if I'm wrong.

SK received the opening kick and proceed to down the field with a nice seven minute drive. Russell then had a nice return to about midfield and moved the ball nicely for a score. I think the game turned when SK held the Devils at the goal line. Russell had their first PAT blocked, so maybe their coach wasn't confident enough to kick a FG, but I know their kicker is pretty good from reading about him, and I watched him boot 50 yarders during the pregame. Gutsy call to go for six, but they could have could have attempted a 3 point fg from extra point range. In the 3rd quarter SK had a poor possession, they completed what appeared to be first down via the pass but where called for illegal man downfield. The next play Lawrence threw a pick and Russell scored to cut it to six. Uncle Mo was there, but a player like Simpson can score on any play, and he did, IMO he had the two biggest plays of the game. If he doesn't put a lick on #38 and knock him out of bounds, Russell goes into the half down six, with serious confidence. Instead, the defense holds, then the 80 yarder, game over.

SK has a new qb? What is his name?

Bustle started the game, but he also played defense tonight and that's a new wrinkle. Lawrence played most of the game at QB, he's a sophmore, and he looked good. He made quite a few plays with his feet, he also had a few nice throws that were dropped. I love Bustle's toughness, the kid is nails but I don't see anything wrong with adding another weapon to the offense. Bustle is physical and I saw him make a few nice blocks as TE.

SK played well, real well.. Russel moved the ball but had a hard time punching it in..

 

The next play Lawrence threw a pick and Russell scored to cut it to six.

 

No need for that pass.. IMO 3rd and 20+ run something safe and punt the ball..
