  1. The downside of aau rears it's ugly head. Happens more than people realize. KY Gators folded up this time last year leaving kids to scramble and find teams. Supervision is at a minimum on these trips. I've been on them. Parents send these kids on out of town trips and coaches do not supervise. So some of these stories about the magic does not surprise me. A Louisville aau coach who's been in it awhile confirmed with me that the magic have folded except for th 15's
  2. I heard when he played in the KOB this year he really didn't like basketball. Several people said he would never play there. I think he's a good player but never really seen him play hard. Looked like he was just going through the motions including the state tournament.
  3. This tournament is the High school division of the State aau. It used to be one tournament that included high school teams and aau teams. In the past the top 4 team were invited to the national aau tournament. I believe there is still a national high school division aau tournament which the final four qualifies for. Back in the 90's nationals was held at Jonesboro Ark.
  4. Why not invite other kids that were at the tryouts. This is becoming a joke. There are a number of good players that tried out and were not selected.
  5. Anthony Davis, John Wall, Jamal Mashburn, Tony Delk, Antoine Walker, John Pelphrey-UK Kemba Walker-UCONN Gerry McNamara, Eric Devondorf, Brandon Triche-Syracuse D-Wade-Marquette Luke Harangody-Notre Dame Kenyan Martin-UC
  6. Agreed! He is baby sitting the Ky Gators. Sat on their bench during state aau's. Soon as things dont go the kids way they bame the HS coach and start transferring.
  7. Wells was playing with Central yesterday. Interesting since technically you cant practice until school is out, only "open Gym," how well he knew their system. A change of address shouldnt come into play with Cedntral. They are like Manual in they have no district. Kids apply to Central and if they dont make it academically they can be put out. Its always interesting In Louisville to see who transfers. You usually know by the first or second summer event. Nothing is ever done.
  8. I think he should wait and see how his senior year goes. Too many kids rush into commitments that they dont keep.
  9. Good points. Ive been around aau alot the last 10 years and not all the teams are competitive. Looking at their scores, Hoop dreams won by 20, 30, and 40 in first three games then lost in tournament play to Louisville Magic. Easy to see why some kids dont play as hard.
  10. Not sure about officials out in the state pay but officials in Louisville area do well without the travel cost. First year basketball coaches in Louisville make $4,000 and top out at $7,000. A lot of Louisville schools are cutting cost and transportation is one of them. Pushing coaches to get their CDL's to drive team busses. One school told all coaches that transportation will come out of their budgets. To get a CDL takes two-weeks of full time training. More and more getting put on coaches for little pay, at least in Jefferson Co.
  11. Thats why Dow needs to play up where he either plays hard or sits. Playing down for him in the long run may hurt him. He scores in transition, driving to the basket and getting put backs. When he plays hard thats what he still does in 16's. He needs to learn to shoot off screens and knock down threes. Improve his ability at the guard spot where he will play in college. Two years from now he will be considered a tweener because he never plays the guard position playing down. There are plenty of other teams out there that would take him if Hoop Dreams is too full. I realize their are pros and cons to playing up or down. I just think aau should be about improving and playing against better players all the time not just some of the time. Ky Gators proved that playing up winning the 15 and under.
  12. Mistake. Bigger doesnt mean better. Diddle has more history and the girls state had a good atmoshphere to it. May have more attendance the first year but wont sustain it. Will have a lot of empty seats.
  13. Have to ask Why Dow is playing down? He is a two year starter for Ballard playing at a high level. Shouldnt he be playing up against better competition? AAU should be about getting better individually. I saw him play in a game in Lexington and he got nothing out of it. Wasnt even playing hard because he wasnt challenged.
  14. DA applies they would have to listen. Nothing ever substanial just allegations. He brings in a name and money.
  15. I understand coach Holland wants to get into administration and watch his daughter play. Was 14-0 at one point during the season and had to meet with Superintendant. He was miserable there.
  16. Agree. In the news just about every week for assaults. Names I have Heard: 1. Tony Williams-former Doss and UofL player 2. Kevin Salyer-former Doss coach and retired AD at school 3. John Mingus- Desales coach 4. Tom Crews-current Desales assistant, former Head coach at Male/Desales 5. Derek Anderson-former Doss, UK, and NBA player
  17. Always a good event. Several kids have gotten offers from this. Shame you have to have one of these. Colleges especially small college dont get out enough and recruit. Im sure budgets have a lot to do with it.
  18. I've heard KC has wanted out of Doss the last two years. Applied for the Eastern job two years ago. Doss has good facilities but zero community support anymore. Lots of talent but the school is struggling academically and the school climate has changed over the years. Most people think the school is out of control. Doss was in the news on three separate occasions last week for threats against teachers, bomb threat, and police called three times in one day for fighting. Coaching salary is not as good as out in the state, but teaching salary is one of the highest. Depending on KC education and number of years, I would think he is taking a pay cut. Small colleges don't pay assistants much.
  19. Twitter post saying Associate head coach with Happy at Ky Wesleyan. Coached with Happy at Georgetown.
  20. Didn't think you were I understood your comment about Hatton. A lot of kids are like that. The problem is in a one day tryout they don't standout. A kid can show up and play really hard and do some nice things to catch the coaches eyes and make the team over kids who have already proven they can play.
  21. Its a terrible rule. If a parent wants to hold a kid back so they can mature and be the best they can should have the right to do so. The KHSAA shouldnt be telling parents whats in the best interest of their kids. Just another rule to try and enforce. Becoming the NCAA. Have yet to hear a valid aurgument against other than the broad its for athletic purposes.
  22. Im sure he's a great player. He has the stats to back it up. All im saying its a one day tryout and he didnt stand out. Can say the same thing about Cory Thomas. Kid averaged 26 pts a game and looks like he's coasting. Again, should the team be slected on a one day tryout or should there be another procedure?
  23. You cannot be 19 before August 1 of your senior year. If you turn 19 afterwards, you can play as a 19 year old. Still dont have a problem with it. Its taking advantage of the system by parents. Like I said, wish my son was only starting his Freshman year but wasnt willing to hold him back. If other parents are should be there choice.
  24. If a 17 year old was starting his sophomore year he would be ineligible his senior year. I disagree you should be 18 when you start year senior. You should be at your peak both physically and mentally whether you are an athlete or not. I wish my son was only a freshman this year. He has grown two inches from his freshman year and will not turn 18 until May of his senior year. Parents should have the right to make the decision on whats best for their kids not the KHSAA. Beginning to come more like the NCAA with crazy rules that are hard to enforce. I see lawsuits waiting to happen. No way the KHSAA will get away with not allowing a kid to play sports in high school because he or she was held back in middle school. Another rule they are implementing without thinking. Everyone remember the no handshake rule that went viral.
