Fairdale's Gregg Longacre Announces Retirement

Featured Replies

After nine years at the helm of Fairdale High School, Gregg Longacre has formally announced his retirement this morning.

He was 147-121 over his nine years. I believe he had previously been an assistant and had been at Fairdale for something in the neighborhood of 30 years. He was a solid coach and will be missed.

That's a heck of a job in the Sixth Region that just opened up...

Wow, I hate that. One of the good guys. I sure do wish him the very best in retirement. Hope he and his family can enjoy more lake time!!

His son just finished his senior year on the team, correct?

His oldest son, yes.

Had them in our Christmas tourney in Panama City, Fl. when I coached at Bay High. Class act with a classy team. Like was said earlier. One of the good guys! Best of luck to him. Enjoy retirement.

Why do you say a heck of a job? I'm asking because I'm curious. I know they host the King of the Bluegrass and had some really good runs through State under Gardner.

What kind of population of students does the school have to draw from? What area of Louisville are their feeders in?

Finally, are there any names being floated around as interested in the job? If not, what type of candidate would be a good fit?

I'm sorry, but I don't have the first clue about those last two questions. I wish I did.

I say "heck of a job" because any job in Louisville can be a good one with the right coach and the right administrative help. Fairdale has had a really nice team the last couple years and was really only missing a big man this year. I think Fairdale's tallest player this year was about 6'4". If, let's say, one of PRP's big guys was playing 10 minutes down the Gene Snyder at Fairdale, they'd have been really good.

There is lots of talent to be had in South Louisville and open enrollment means getting kids into any of those schools is a possibility. Fairdale's had solid teams in the past and Jefferson County's unique enrollment and population bonuses make a JCPS job one that a good coach can do REALLY well at.

I thought Fairdale was more on the outskirts of Jefferson County and was more of a "country" school. Am I misguided in that?

And no question that Fairdale has shown that they can win and win big in the past.

They're a bit further out, but it's not really very far. It's certainly more "country" than most of us are accustomed to who live closer to downtown. The school itself on the north side of the Fairdale neighborhood, right off the Gene Snyder freeway and is easily accessible from most of the city.

Gotcha. I just knew that because someone at UK told me if I lived in Louisville, I'd fit in with the "country boys" at Fairdale. Hahaha. Still not really sure what that means other than it's certain I wouldn't have been on their basketball team.

:lol2:

I grew up pretty far out in the East End (probably closer to LaGrange than to Downtown Louisville); when I started law school, I moved to the Highlands, which is right outside downtown.

I now work in Pleasure Ridge Park on the South End. I love it here, but the South End (of which Fairdale's definitely a part) is just different. The accents are a lot thicker and there are a lot more pickup trucks. There's definitely much more of a country feel to parts of the South End than anywhere else in Louisville.

Am I the only one that doesn't believe he's finished coaching?

Salt of the Earth.

Perhaps.
