Usually agree with LABS & Old Guy, but I thought the intentional foul call was wrong. Just a good hard foul, nothing intentional. It seems like every time a player goes in for a dunk, if he gets fouled, it's intentional. Had he been going for a traditional layup, I don't think the same foul would've been called intentional. In my mind, definetely the turning point of the game!

They weren't in the same district then. HC was in the 34th and Holmes was in the 35th. It didn't last too long, probably between 5 & 10 years. HC had their greatest run in history during that time, making the regionals almost every year. Also went to the region finals 4 times in that stretch between '89 and '94, winning it twice. Eventually, Holmes was put back and it is tougher than ever to get out of the district now with Holmes & CCH again.

What, seats available? Where were all those grade school kids taking all the seats that EZ Living keeps telling us about?:laugh:

Probably the biggest upset I remember! Not only was Holmes loaded but HC had lost Harney, Clark and several other seniors to graduation. The only returning players with any varsity experience were Goetz & Saalfeld. Best coaching job in one game I've ever witnessed. I've always wondered if this was the "straw that broke the camel's back" for Mike Flynn. His teams were also upset in the regionals by HC in '89 & '91.

Larry Miller strapped Beechwood on his back and carried them through those two games. It was an incredible two game run. There may have been bigger upsets, but I never remember two in a row that were this big.

Coach Henley also comments on THIS game in the Holmes/Highlands story in the morning Enquirer. The poll is definetely premature, but the game is obviously on Holmes fans & coaches minds. This post isn't about who's going to win the game, just can't beleive anyone would say it's not on fans or coaches minds with the above evidence.

Not necessarily. You could start Giwa, Eastin, Volpenhein, Sullivan & Egan. If Sullivan or Egan need to go out, move Volpenhein down low and put Fortner in Volpenhein's spot for defense. It's not so much about who starts as long as those two play together a lot of the 32 minutes.

I'd like HC's chances to beat CCH better if they would play Eric Sullivan & Keith Egan together instead of platooning them. This would give them two legit scoring threats inside, more rebounding and better interior defense. Use Volpenhein to back them up down low. Also Giwa is going to have to be able to create in the 1/2 court offense if they're going to beat CCH. Fortner can give them the defense out top that they'll miss by Volpenhein backing up down low.

EZ, when is the last time you went to a game at HC? Back in the 60's & 70's there were a lot of grade school kids at the games. The only games you had to get to early were CCH and Holmes though. I guarantee you there aren't 10 grade school kids that aren't siblings of players or coaches in the stands now though.

"Baseball is Life" had this as a 1 point game and "Air Yard Go" had this as a 2 point game in overtime in the prediction thread. They just had the wrong winner.

You make a good point! However, are you aware that HC has made it to the State Tournament 4 times and has 7 wins for a 7-4 all time record? CCH on the other hand has gone 8 times and has 6 wins for an all time record of 6-8. NCC has also gone 8 times and has a 5-9 overall record. The only two teams in the 9th Region who have more state tourney wins than HC are Holmes (22) and Highlands (9). HC may not make the regional as often as CCH, but when they do they perform much better. I'll take quality over quantity in this case!

Your very reliable source isn't very reliable! I know for a fact that Holy Cross was ranked #1 in the 94-95 season and I'm 90% sure they were in 64-65. This is only one team in the region. I guarantee you there were others ranked #1 at some time in the regular season too.

Amen! Holmes is the better team. However, you gotta wonder what game Eta was watching! HC did NOT play "stall ball". They were patient on offense period. Holmes was probably MORE patient on offense than HC. In fact, if they had a stat for "time of possession", I would bet it was pretty even tonight. Holmes didn't run and gun at all. They didn't press the whole game and it was almost like they wanted to see how they could handle a slower game pace in case they are forced to play that style somewhere down the road this year. BTW the game was as close as the score indicated. It was not a blowout by any means. The 14 point margin was about right for how this game played out.

While we're reminiscing, let's not forget the 1972 regional finals when Holy Cross beat Holmes by 38 (90-58).

One thing HC does have is depth. They run 10 guys in and out. Don't know which game you saw to make you think they have no depth!

HC usually does very well at the Fieldhouse. They need this game to be in the 50's to have any chance. If they let Mason dictate the tempo, it'll be a long ride home! Highlands proved it can be done, but odds are against HC pulling off the upset.

He's just back from football and with a deep bench, there's no need to rush him. He will be a huge factor before the season's over. HC will need his presence underneath. They really could've used him to bang underneath tonight against NCC. As the season goes on, I'm sure he'll see more and more minutes.

Big win for HC. Two very evenly matched teams. Geisler was a beast with 32 of NCC's 48 points. Pangallo added 10 for a total of 42 of the 48. Giwa had a big game too for HC. With 7 seniors and a 10 man rotation, HC will surprise some teams this year.

The girls were informed today after school. The new coach is Shannon Minor.
