Letcher Co. Central at Highlands (5A)
First Musketeer replied to 72birdman's topic in KY Football (High School)
If UK looses to Tennesee and doesn't get a descent bowl bid, Dale just may propose a match-up with the 'Cats in Papa John around New Years. Both teams are known to bring a crowd. -

I've been keeping an eye on Breathitt and they appear to be explosive. Have they played any opponents from other areas of the state? -
I'd have to think that Coach R has a great shot of getting the job.

Fumbles on two consecutive offensive plays in the first quarter doom CCH. If they had scored on their opening drive, like it appeared they were going to do, I believe that many of the predicitions of the Birds pulling away in the second half may have played-out. I for one, expected this one to be decided late; rather, one possession and great defense was all HHS needed. Both teams again show lots of class during and after a hard hitting contest. -
Second Round: Rockcastle County @ Bell County

Sounds like another good old good one in the Mountain District. Good luck to both teams. I'll like to see the winner run the table in 4A! -
I am saddened to witness the downturn at Owen County. Clearly, in order for the situation to improve, its going to take strong leadership, commitment from the athletes and their families, and the support of the community. OC has developed a fine women's basketball tradition, let's pull for them to get the football program back on track. Come on Rebels!

CovCath/Highlands Predictions

For so many reasons, this one is just like so many meeting in the past: too close to call. May well go down to the final possession. -

Highlands/Lex. Catholic predictions

Da Birds are definitely capable of posting a nice win at LexCath, however, this week they've also definitely got to put a lid on fumbles and fifteen yard penalties! How is the LexCath passing attack? IMO, the HHS defense may be susceptible to giving up mid-range yardage to a good passing team that can protect their passer. -
Congrats to the GreenDevils. Originally I felt that the only way a single A team from Campbell Co. could win state would be for the Tigers from Ft. Mitchell to play-up in AA, and to head-to-head with the Breds like they should Presently, I'm feeling good about them Devils.

Remember when CovCath used to host games on friday night, starting at about 5:30. I'll never forget the game in '84 or '85 (well I guess I'm forgetting already) when by the fourth quarter, it was dark. CovCath put together a nice drive and a two point conversion for the come-from-behind win over HHS. Another magical game at Wooten Field.

Drew's understudy, Alex Etien sp currently a super-soph soccer player, will likely do quite well handling the kicking duties his Jr & Sr years.
-
I agree that in recent years there seams to be an elevated level of talent in the kicking game in Ky HS football, and its a lot of fun to see this dimension of the game being more instrumental in determining outcomes. I believe it will be a while before Shane Pophams records of 2006 are broken. He had a major hand, er foot, in CovCath's drive to the state title.

This great win reminds me in so many ways of another very high profile HHS win of the past. Neutral site, come from behind, one enormous pass play TD, an exceptionally talented and athletic opponent, big goal line stand; coaching, conditioning & desire seal it for the Birds. This is really too easy. Anybody? -
I was there, and am just now regaining consciousness. Both teams absolutely left it all on the field. Hate to see the Birds come up short. The Colonels' drive with less than a minute was unbelievable - you just can't say enough about the finish, they certainly lived up to their motto. The last Highlands drive was the kind that I believe they can repeat often in round two. It seemed to me that Jordan Kremer was somewhat deprived of opportunities in the first half. With CovCath having all the MO going into halftime after the interception, with the lead, and getting ball to start the second, Highlands did a real nice job of keeping their composure and taking control of the game. The Birds have to be concerned with how well the Colonels passed the ball, particularly with having a number of dropped ball in the first half. Yet the D-backs were there to break-up few as well. I trust that Drew will be permitted to boom away kick-offs next time around. Well, going in, I felt that this one was just too close to call, and now the teams know each other better yet. A few years back - late eighties, early nineties, the winner of the regular season game fell to the other team in the rematch. This scenario played-out more than once, with the advancing team winning it all in AAA. The stage is set...

History of your schools State Champion Teams
First Musketeer replied to Qryche11's topic in KY Football (High School)
The '68 Bluebirds were a team to behold. Mike Murphy's first title team, known as "crew-cut-champions", they were little and quick, having only a single player weighing more than 200 lbs. In-the-huddle, out-of-the-huddle was the motto, they overwhelmed opponents. Three or four Division One players on the team lead by Tim Racke, All-American at Purdue and cut by the Chicago Bears. Closest game was 14 - 0 win over CovCath. Faced 100-man Bryan Station in round one, followed by Belfry and then E'town at Stoll Field. Trailed E'town early 7-6, the only time they trailed anyone all year. But in typical fashion, won by 6 or 7 TD's. -
Does anyone know how this one turned out?
-
Sorry for the confusion, cshs81. My second post on this thread was meant for "LC - HHS predictions". I was referring to FC's performance vs HHS. That's what I get for posting at 1:00 am.

FC's skilled passing combo exploits an area of concern for the Bluebirds, yet they only put up two scores. By getting to the Lex Cath QB, the quick Highlands D can take them out of their game. With CovCath scoring 39 on LC's D, I feel quite good about the Bird's chances to host another semi-final.
