I will preface this by saying I'm not trying to be negative, but since the post that this conversation was on is closed, I wanted to bring it back up in a new post.

 

Owen County went 1-10 this year. Their lone win came against first year program Bishop Brossart.

 

What is going on in Owenton.

 

Personally, I had requested Coach Hockensmith to come on my show to talk about the program but never received an answer. They posted stats with the KHSAA after the first week, but that's it. I e-mailed him for stats but never received anything. Coach Hockensmith was the A.D. last year, but Randy Bishop took over those duties when Coach Hockensmith took over the football program.

 

I had read on here before the start of the season, that he had coached football before, but I'm not sure where and to what success, so I will not pass judgement on that.

 

What has happened to the football team. Someone please enlighten us.

I have talked to previous players and coaches, and their personal self-esteem isn't very high. They go into some games knowing they are going to lose. Also, in the past they have a had a very tough schedule. Playing the likes of Boyle Co. As for this year I have spoken with a few of the players and they felt like they were going to have a good year. I even talked to one of them after the BB game and he felt very well about the upcoming season. So, I really don't know what happened to them after that. Might have got out coached or maybe the athletes just are not there.

From the games I watched this season it wasn't the athletes that were the problems. Owen seemed to have the athletes. The problem seemed to be play calling. Anytime you get down inside the 10 or 5 yard line you have to score. The games I saw, Owen had several oppertunities to score and didn't due to poor play calling and turnovers. Then it seemed as if they just went 3 and out everytime except those few successful drives. As a result their defense was on the field the majority of the time and seemed to get tired. Can't really comment on what the true issue at hand in Owen Co. is but if the head guy was in charge of the offense then he could be to blame for some of the losses. If he was in charge of the defense then kudos to him for having to have his players on the field the majority of the game.

This year I noticed the Owen County program really seemed unorganized. That is just one persons opinion, but none-the-less true. I don't know why it is so hard to win at certain schools, but there has to be an answer out there.

I do not know why Owen was so poor this year. Some people blame it on the administration, while others blame it on the coaches.

I sure hope Owen county finds the problem and can start winning games.

I've always heard that a players attitude reflects the leadership of a program. Owen better take notice and get to the bottom of this fast.

I observed a team that did not seem to have the desire to play at their games. They seemed to be there to get it over with and had no intensity or desire to do anything but see the clock hit 00:00 to signal the end of the game. I saw a kickoff return in which the kid seemed scared to handle the ball and certainly did not want to take a hit. It was a team of kids that seemed to not want to play the game. It was like watching flag football with a bunch of kids. No organization, desire, or will to win. Is it coaching? I would say to a certain extent. The program has to start with youths that have fundamentals and are coached through their younger years preparing themselves for the big boys. Football is a game of men overcoming adversity on the field, not boys leaning the game. If you do not know the game by high school it is too late. The rest is desire and motivation. It takes a lot of dedication in the off-season. Those teams that work hard in the off-season are the ones you see advance in the post-season.

They let a guy go that got his kids to play hard. They had some players. Coach U was/is a good coach.

They got rid of a good coach in Coach U. He was organized, disciplined and loved the kids. They were often competitive with teams they had no business competing with athlete wise. They will now have to sleep in the bed they made.

So why did they get rid of him? This is not the type of team they have had in the past obviously. Must have been a good reason.

The head coach was 99.9% of the problem. He had no respect for his players or his assistants. Most of the kids and all of his assistants knew a lot more about football than he did, when they would try to talk to him or discuss things , he didn't want to listen. He had the talent but didn't utilize it. He never had the best 11 players on the field.

So what happened with the Coach(U??) from last year? Is he coaching somewhere else and was he fired at Owen? I remember them from 7 on 7 and they were very competitive and seemed to be well disciplined.

If this statement is indeed true.........that the head coach did not have the best 11 players on the field, that he did not respect the players or his assistants, and didn't listen to them (especially if they knew more than he did), then it sounds like to me the head coach is at fault for Owen Co.'s less than impressive season.

 

Does anyone know where this guy came from? Where did he play high school ball at (if he did play college ball)? Where did he play college ball at (if he did play college ball)? What gives the impression that his assistants had more football knowledge than him?
