Why shouldn't Owen blame him for the struggles that occurred this year? If what I am reading on these posts are correct, a head coach that doesn't get along with his assistants, a head coach that the players don't respect, a head coach that doesn't watch film with his players to make them better, a guy that doesn't require the kids to be in the weight room............those sound like great contributing factors for a program that was already "struggling" to go down the drain even faster, as it appears they did this year.

Kids watching film is overrated. They don't know what too look for. If the coach puts together a soli scouting report they get more from that instead of watching film.

 

I am not saying some of this stuff is posted is not true. But there is 2 sides to every story. Owen County situation hasn't been great since the 70's. So there has been proally 10 coaches between that time that sould take resonsibility. Not just the current one. Attitudes need to change, with the players, coaches, and fans to be a success. I wish Coach Hockensmith the best. I also wis all the players involved the best as well.

You are absolutley right about the players watching film. It is more important that the coach knows how to break the film down and translate that to his players. With that said, I do think that it is the coaches job to teach the kids how to watch film during the four years at the program.

You are right. PLAYERS watching film is overrated but a HEAD COACH watching film and going over it WITH HIS PLAYERS is NOT OVERRATED.

Yes, CoachBuckett, you are correct that attitudes need to change but, is there a concerted effort being made to do so with the coaches, players, and community? Are fans of the football game wrong to express the concerns that have been voiced in this thread? You also mentioned that "maybe this guy wants to do things different" - nothing wrong with that. However, it seems that in this situation different did not euqal better. Wait another year or two - o.k. - but, as I recall, Owen is a small school and they can't afford to loose players. Are the returning players being encouraged to stay with the program? What will/can this coach do to turn things around and build the program in short order? I agree that there are two sides to every story. We've heard a lot from one side. Can someone fill us in on the other? Why didn't buttles get the stats or responses that he requested? Who did hire the assistant coaches (where I'm from the head coach hires the assistants)? I've only seen mention of one assistant coach (Blackburn I believe) was he the only one? Like I have said on here what I knew of coach U I liked and I realize a 1-10 season is hard to stomach. After going back and looking at Owen's season records back to the 90 season whoever took over in 2000 has done the program no favors. Starting in 95 they went 10-1, 9-2, 8-4 11-2, 8-3 since 2000 2-8, 3-8,5-5, 3-7, 2-8,2-8 and 3-7. To lay the failure of Owen football all at coach Hockensmiths feet seems a little unfair.

My experience is when a program(s) start to struggle and continues to get worse, the problem starts at the top of the "food chain"... If parents, alumni, community don't put any pressure on the administration then they will continue to get away with letting your program fail. Also the AD needs to have set of you know whats or a back bone to stand up for the program(s).

I have seen areas where the AD is a major suck up, because they don't want to rock the boat.

Every single person in the administration and down plays a major role in over-all success.

I am all for people expressing what they think.... I am just saying that when a coach has been hired to turn aroun a program don't judge it on year one. At some small schools there are not a bunch of teaching jobs so coaches sometime hang on to assistants from previous staff. I am not sure what the deal is at Owen. I am an outsider. I am just tryin to support a guy long enough totry and make improvements. Also to say that there is a second side to every story. If you are someone local go by and get to know the coach become a part of the solution. I hope it works out for everyone. If he doesnt make some improvements then let him go.

Lets face it Owen County football has been down for a while. So lets not act like Coach Hockensmith has brought the program down. Maybe this guy wants to do things different. So I say lets wait a nother year or 2 before we start blaming him for Owens struggling program.

WE had high expectations with all the seniors we had coming back with playing experience. Then take them out of the offense. Play calling IMO was the biggest problem. If it didn't work in the last game and the game before that and the game before that and in the 1sr qtr. and the 2nd qtr and the 3rd qtr it ain't gonna work in the 4th qtr. or next week or the week after that.

So your saying, forget about your seniors and put less talented underclassmen on the field instead so we can be better next year? There isn't a next year for the seniors. To win games you put your best 11 on the field, and try to win every game. Don't you think that more kids would want to play for a winning team?

You're right my bad. My old eyes went one line above on the KHSAA sight and that 90's record was Oldham Counties. So Owen hasn't been very good for along time.

Those numbers aren't great but right now I think they would take 5-6, 6-5, 5-6, 5-5 over four years than 1-9.
