Owen is a 2A school. None the less still an impressive stat.

Coach U's offense was a little complicated from what Iv'e been told but this year would have been his best record if they kept him.

 

I have gotten the chance to talk with Coach U on several ocassions. I think he was a class act. The offense that he ran at Owen County was not very complicated. Maybe some of the terminology was, I do not know for sure.

I was told that the head coach never went over game film with the players. If the assistant coaches didn't do it, then it wouldn't have gotten done. Anytime that they were watching film, he was always doing something else. What could be more important during practice time, when your preparing for the next game, than to help your players by watching film? Is any of this true? If so, then the new AD better be looking to start interviewing ASAP.

 

If he was taken out of the A.D. role and does not coach anything else, what else would he be doing. Most of the coaches that I talk with watch the game film on Saturday morning with the players before they lift. Unless there were some personal issues that no one knows about, what would a head coach be doing??

So what happened with the Coach(U??) from last year? Is he coaching somewhere else and was he fired at Owen? I remember them from 7 on 7 and they were very competitive and seemed to be well disciplined.

 

That seems to be the $64 question. Why was the previous coach (U) let go? I have seen this asked several times since summer and unless I'm mistaken there hasn't been an answer. Please enlighten me too.

It is over. The 2007 Owen County football season has come to an end. The Rebels finished the season with a 52-6 loss to the DeSales Colts in the Class 2A Playoffs on Friday night in Louisville.

Much like in the first meeting between these two teams, the Colts were able to open up a lead and then cruise to the win. DeSales scored three times in the first quarter on short touchdown runs to open up a 21-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Colts were able to score on an interception return and a punt return to open up a 35-0 advantage. Another touchdown run from 15 yards out and a short field goal would make the score 45-0 at intermission.

In the third quarter, the Colts scored once more. In the fourth quarter Josh Sloan scored on a 22-yard run for the Rebels’ only points of the night.

With the win, the Colts advance to play Christian Academy of Louisville who knocked of Carroll County, 21-14.

With the loss, the Rebels finished the season with a 1-10 record. DeSales improved to 6-5 with the win.

Owen County won the first game of the season against Bishop Brossart for the team’s only victory of the year. The Rebels played close games against Grant County, Carroll County and Paris, but were unable to come up with the plays in the end to win those games.

Now the Rebels will begin to prepare for next season. Coach Hockensmith said he hopes that more kids will come out and get involved in the off-season conditioning program. Much of that work will be done in the weight room.

The coach said he hopes more kids will come to realize that football season does not end when the games end, but rather it has become a year-round sport where working-out throughout the year is important.

Here is my question. If the coach was the question, and the players don't like playing for him, if anything he will see less numbers next year than this year. It almost seems like he is questioning the willingness of the kids to work in the off season. Do you see that also???

The kids will play next year no matter who's coaching, because they love to play. They didn't quit this year, They stuck with it till the end.

Why would any player want to go and work out and be involved in the off-season for a coach who doesn't respect anyone around him? If this guy is in charge of the strength and conditioning, will that be any different than the way he coached during the regular season? Will the same dis-interest be shown in the weight room as was shown when watching film, preparing stats, going over plays, etc...? I say the kids won't bother with the off-season unless Owen hires someone else - FAST. Kids know weight lifting is not a requirement to play but rather just a request from the "guy at the helm". Just from reading all the "stuff" on this thread, it sounds like to me they won't play no matter how much they love it because it won't be worth all the other problems that seem to be going on. Maybe they didn't quit this year because they've been taught to never give up, or maybe they are trying to play on the next level, or perhaps the older players were trying to set a positive example by staying while encouraging the younger players to do the same. Sounds like someone needed to set a good example.

I agree that someone needs to set an example. I have only seen 1 Owen Co. game this year, but in the one that I did see, the seniors took care of the team. From the moment they got off the bus, the boys went to the locker room all on their own and were alone until they met the coaches on the field for pre-game. I don't know the coaches at Owen and hate to talk bad about them, but that stuck with me from early in the season as something strange. Now, in looking at this board, it makes a little more sense

I am saddened to witness the downturn at Owen County. Clearly, in order for the situation to improve, its going to take strong leadership, commitment from the athletes and their families, and the support of the community. OC has developed a fine women's basketball tradition, let's pull for them to get the football program back on track. Come on Rebels!

Our baseball and boy's basketball teams won quite a few games last year. Look at those records 21-6 and 20-9. There are some good athletes in Owen Co. who can win when led in the right direction.

I will preface this by saying I'm not trying to be negative, but since the post that this conversation was on is closed, I wanted to bring it back up in a new post.

 

Owen County went 1-10 this year. Their lone win came against first year program Bishop Brossart.

 

What is going on in Owenton.

 

Personally, I had requested Coach Hockensmith to come on my show to talk about the program but never received an answer. They posted stats with the KHSAA after the first week, but that's it. I e-mailed him for stats but never received anything. Coach Hockensmith was the A.D. last year, but Randy Bishop took over those duties when Coach Hockensmith took over the football program.

 

I had read on here before the start of the season, that he had coached football before, but I'm not sure where and to what success, so I will not pass judgement on that.

 

What has happened to the football team. Someone please enlighten us.

 

He was at Scott County for awhile, but not the head coach, I believe he was the Freshman Coach????

Why shouldn't Owen blame him for the struggles that occurred this year? If what I am reading on these posts are correct, a head coach that doesn't get along with his assistants, a head coach that the players don't respect, a head coach that doesn't watch film with his players to make them better, a guy that doesn't require the kids to be in the weight room............those sound like great contributing factors for a program that was already "struggling" to go down the drain even faster, as it appears they did this year.
