I remember watching Jon Hood's Madisonville team play in the LIT one year — I think he was a junior then. It was hard to watch because he had no supporting cast whatsoever and DeSales dragged them all over the court. They won 20+ games and took their district that year, but I remember being surprised at the time that they actually did that and won a game in the region. They were sub-.500 his senior year, and I may have seen them then as well, so my memories may be mixing. They were in the LexCath tourney and the KOB his senior year, and I saw his team then as well.

Very sad. I didn't know him personally, but our paths crossed fairly regularly. In this age of newsrooms being stretched to the threads, folks like him fill in a lot of coverage gaps, and are incomprehensibly invaluable when it comes to making sure kids' photos get in the paper and online.

Good luck with the writers part of that. We're already stretched awfully thin and paid poorly, and while I can't speak for my colleagues, some of us don't like to spend our non-work time on more work. Best you might get is a mix of coaches and some computer rankings. That will cause much howling, because it's debatable how deeply the coaches will get involved with the process. And I will have to question your statement about 90 percent of a team's schedule being "meaningless." At least in the district I'm in, the 5 schools play three-game series to decide the district tournament seeding, then 2 or perhaps 3 more in district, and ever how many games they play in the region. For example, Nelson Co. played 15 games against district opponents last year as a No. 4 seed winning the 19th District, then 3 more before falling in the region final. They went 21-19 overall, and played 18 of their 40 games with some kind of postseason implications on the line. In our same district this year, Washington Co. played 14 games against district opponents and 2 more in region play. They had 33 total games.

Let's hear a proposal about how an NCAA-style tournament selection method would be implemented for championship events at the HS level.

Look, I am definitely from the camp of the worst reason to keep doing something is because it's always been done that way. With that in mind, understand that I think the tradition is a good one, since there's no real equitable and 100 percent accurate way to rank the teams. Go to any of the football and HS hoops forums and watch how people complain about the computer rankings, and ask yourself how that might work with something as big as the Sweet 16.

Five days and the QFs aren't complete in the 5th. And so it goes …

I've been following HS sports for 15 years, and I don't ever recall a region week that has been so fraught with weather problems. I'm struggling to find a scenario, given the expected weather over the weekend, that there has been a more weather-affected region week. There will be at least one region final played on Monday. But I hope I'm wrong.

I wonder if Coach Egli is still dry about the unpleasant welcome Coach McKee gave his Nelson Co. team in a first-round playoff visit back in 2010. SC scored a 41-0 win on Nelson Co. that year, and Egli at the time seemed to feel like his dad just threw him outta the house. SC got to the state SFs that year.

As my good friend noted on Twitter, back in March the No.1 and No.2 teams in the state met in the first round of the SW16 basketball tourney. Neither of those teams won the state title. Win the game directly in front of you, and the rest will take care of itself if you're good enough. If that's not good enough for you, get over it. It's how we do things here.

That's nothing. We are still trying to get finished with all of the first-round games in the 5th. LaRue Co. beat E'town 3-1 tonight in a game that started Monday. Bardstown and Campbellsville finally got a chance to take the field tonight. They got 2 1/2 innings in and two strikes on the leadoff batter in the B3rd when lightning was sighted and play was suspended. Bardstown was up 1-0 at the time after piecing together two singles, a walk and a sacrifice and a groundout to plate a run in the T3rd. Here's the schedule as I know it: 2:30pm — Washington Co. v. Central Hardin SF game 5pm — resumption of Bardstown-Campbellsville QF game 7:45pm — LaRue Co. v. BHS/CHS winner in SFs The scheduling for Saturday was complicated by graduations at some of the participating schools. Finals are set for Sunday, but I'm not sure what time.

They fought through some long delays yesterday at John Hardin, but managed to get the first two games in. After two innings in QF #3, LaRue Co. was leading E'town 2-0 when play was halted. It was first postponed to today, but a storm blew through earlier and caused them to push that game and the Bardstown-Campbellsville QF back to Wednesday.

Field hockey and lacrosse are not options at most schools in Ky, so those sports' impact would be minimum. Soccer would seem to hurt softball and T/F more because soccer's club season is spring. Now volleyball, that's a different story. Used to be the only sport option for tall girls was hoops. Many of those tall girls didn't like all the contact that comes with being one of the tall girls on the court and chose volleyball instead, and VB has club season in the winter.

Bardstown senior Reece Puckett picked up his 44th SB of the season in Thursday's 9-7 district championship loss to Washington Co., giving him 166 for his career, most in state history. He will have a chance to add to his total in next week's 5th Region tournament. Reece has been a starter since his eighth-grade year and his time at Bardstown has coincided with some of the best teams in the school's history. Reece will be playing at Kentucky Wesleyan next year. The previous record of 165 was held by Model's Garrison Gray for just one year. He broke the previous record of 164 last year, formerly held by Raceland's Thomas Tolliver, who held the record since 2006. Congratulations, Reece! :thumb:

Considering there are still schools out there that struggle with the concept of equal opportunity for the girls' teams as opposed to the boys' teams, I'd say yes. Some areas wouldn't have even bothered with girls' sports had they not been forced to.

As was mentioned before, Lone Jack is in BellCo. If I'm not mistaken, Wayne Co. boys' hoops head coach Rodney Woods is from there. Wasn't the school out on 119?

When the press tent flooded after about an hour, that's when I bolted. My poor feet look like raisins. What a mess.
