Unless the "rules" have changed in the last couple of years, it makes no difference whether the sending school objects or is fine with the transfer to the receiving school. It's hard enough to have precedence value in the KHSAA's rulings because of varying facts but to deny eligibility because the sending school objected and allow eligibility when the sending school did not object would throw any effort to have precedence out the window. Having said that, the objection or acquiescence of the sending school may have figured into the "athletic intent" issue, which as we know trumps whether one of the exceptions is met.

I always doctor them up with whatever I have handy. This time I added a little hamburger, as well as Worchestershire sause, some onion soup mix, a dash or two of A-1; dried thyme (or was it rosemary?), garlic powder, salt and pepper. The charcoal still had some apple chips left over from the brisket, so the burgers had a little smoke apple taste to them. Henry won't let me cook anything more complicated than microwaved coffee at the house, so when I get to cook down at the farm, I like to have fun cooking. I learned my lesson last year when I cooked a fancy menu for about 25 folks. Lordy, that was work. This year I kept it much simpler. Hope I didn't offend Joker with my comment about how simple it was to smoke a brisket after he'd posted something to the effect that it can be difficult. But it was pretty simple. I may have just got lucky with my first attempt.

Smoked my first brisket Friday night. I'd read how hard it is. It was simple. Perhaps because I went with a smaller one (5.5 lbs). Used a Weber kettle grill. Kept it around 225 degrees. Used a pre-made dry rub purchased at Krogers. Wrapped it in foil for the last 1.5 hours.Came out extremely moist and juicy. Used it as an appetizer for a gathering of folks down the farm. It was devoured. Grilled venison burgers for the dinner, with topping choices of bacon, spam, metts and/or ham, with sides of salad and Cincy style chili on mac n cheese (basically a 3 way). Grilling season is indeed here.

No disrespect, but I find the regular season to be extremely meaningful. I'm sure my sons did too when they played. Wanting to win every game regardless of the impact on the playoffs was meaningful to them. Plus winning the district games had a big impact on whether you stayed at home the first two playoff games. If we have to play CovCath in the playoffs, I sure like it being at Highlands, which means the regular season game against them is HUGE.

HellBird, there have been some recent years that Highlands was heads and shoulders better than CovCath and there have been some recent years that, while Highlands won the games, the two teams were pretty close. Some years that the Birds won state, I felt that CovCath was the best team Highlands played all year; other years I've felt that Johnson Central was the best Highlands played all year. So perhaps you are partially right and Bluedad is partially right.

That simply is not true. I would do the research to first determine if the Florida team playing Cooper was weak, average or strong. And if I couldn't make that determination, I'd keep my mouth shut.

True; then again it doesn't hurt that 3 former UK players will be playing in the Super Bowl this weekend. Alabama may have even more than that, but it isn't shabby at all that UK has three. And truthfully, much like where you play in high school has little impact on whether you get a D1 scholly, where you play college ball doesn't have much of an impact on whether you get to play in the NFL. The power house college teams have more players in the NFL not because those players went to the power house colleges but rather because the athletes with NFL potential generally tend to choose the power house programs.

Congrats to Brady. Extremely nice young man. I think he'll do a great job leading the freddies.

A tangent to the topic: Duffy was the one that requested that the Jr. Football League "shut down" the 7th/8th grade division and put two teams in the Middle School League. I was the President of the Jr. Football League at the time. Duffy had a say in who the coaches were for those two teams from the beginning.

The bolded brought back memories of my sons telling me that they dreaded conditioning when Dale had to miss because Brian would be in charge. It was no picnic when Dale was in charge, but it was sheer hell when Brian ran it. Will we see the return of Chips Across Ft. Thomas?

I can't believe I forgot Wilbur. My O line coach. I thought of him as I was typing and then went and left him out. Hope he doesn't figure out who I am on here. He'll kill me! So add to my list another Highlands "insider" that did a great job when given the opportunity. My apologies to Coach Hermann. A great man and great coach too!

Wish I could have made it to the announcement but clients got in the way. I obviously think it was a great hire. I'm sure Brian will put his own stamp on things, but I'd be surprised if anything changes much. When you have a successful organization (any organization) and there is a change at the top, if you have someone internal that provides every indication that he or she is capable of successfully taking the reins, you give the reins to him or her. It doesn't always work out but very often it does. Brian understands the school, the administration, the program, the players and the community. No learning curve involved. I hate to bring up a bad wound, but I can't help but think about all the angst and heartburn that was caused when CovCath hired a football coach that didn't understand or appreciate the CovCath way. Highlands has had a lot of success when it hired one of it's own, be that a former player or assistant coach, as its head coach. Homer played at Highlands; he was replaced by an assistant (Owen Hauck); Owen was replaced by an assistant coach (Mike Murphy); Mike was replaced by an assistant coach (Roger Walz); Roger was replaced by an assistant coach (Jack Eicher); Jack was replaced by a very good coach but an outsider (Tom Duffy); Tom was replaced by a former player (Dale). All of those coaches with the exception of Jack have won state championships. The one outsider (Duffy) did win state championships but did a whole lot of damage to the program out in the community in the process and I am totally convinced that had he remained at Highlands, the football program would have been turned into shambles. So I'm really glad that Brian got the job. If he had not, my guess is that he would have left Highlands and taken a HC job elsewhere. If he had, he'd probably have taken a couple of asst coaches with him. One of the biggest (but often overlooked) reasons for so much success at Highlands during Dale's tenure, is the continuity of his coaching staff. So we'd not only have to replace a HC, but a DC and several other coaches also. Not the kind of thing you want to have happen in any organization when that organization is being very successful. Bottom line with me: I believe that Brian is very qualified; he understands "Highlands football" and its relationship with the community; he has certainly earned the shot; and to have not hired him would/could have created turmoil at a time when the players need to be doing the things that will help them win the state championship this coming December. It was a true "no brainer" hire for me.

I'm with you: keep the uniforms to just blue and white. Those are our school colors. Period. Will I get upset if they add red, black, purple, chartruse, etc? Nah. Got bigger things to worry about in my life. But I'd prefer the unis stay blue and white.
