Unable to compete

Featured Replies

The Grant county thing got me to thinking about a proposed change to class 1a.

What if class a was by invitation only to the 36 weakest programs in the commonwealth. In lieu of becoming independent like I suggested in the other thread those 36 programs would be divided into 4 districts of 9 teams each, agree to play 8 district games and there would be no playoff at the end of the season at all for class 1a. The programs would be evaluated after a 2 year cycle to see in what order teams would be invited to play in class 1A. A 5 year Calpreps, Massey, Litkenhouse, Cantrall type average would determine the list in order of invitation. A team could elect to pass on the invitation and play in its actual class. All other schools then divided into 4 classes and have playoffs.

District 2 and 3 were very difficult to divide geographically. Nothing is perfect and there is travel involved but beggars can't be choosers.

The issue, I think, would be that the other 1A school who could compete would be lumped in with some big schools by comparison in the 4 Classes that are left and create some travel issues with the leftovers from 1A and some 2A districts. I think it would be helpful if someone could breakdown a potential classification with that set up?? Would be interesting.

Okay, basic question: What defines "weakest"?

Overall I think the travel in the other classes will be better because the entire state would be in 5 classes not 6. The rest of the current teams like Mayfield, Beechwood, Frankfort, Raceland, will be OK in 2A because they are the cream of the crop and there aren't that many anyway. Good points to look at though.

Completely skimmed over that in your original post. So that means that new programs would have to take 5 years of potential shellacking, regardless?

No i'd re-do the classes every 2 years, but using an average that goes back 5 years to give a broader look at the "program". I hadn't thought of new programs but they would obviously be eligible at the earliest 2 year window. If they time it up right they would be in the first year.

Makes too much sense.

I said in a post last night in another thread and have said it before, just because you are a "4A school, they should have good numbers" doesn't mean crap. Demographics. Demographics. Demographics. Any and everything under that umbrella.

That would WITHOUT a doube be the most balanced and competitive class, which would in turn, make all of the other classes the same (for the most part).

I knew you would enjoy it Harry

Great observation Harry Doyle, I can think of several 5A & 6A schools that people think just because they have high enrollment numbers that this is going to translate to tons of athletes in the building & frankly that isn't the case @ several places. Demographics is HUGE

Yeah with those teams playing each other 8 times and eliminated from the playoffs there would be a lot more competitive games across the board state wide.

Almost as good as Shrimp Souffle at this little joing just outside of Nashville called The Boiler, ever heard of it?!

ALMOST as good. :jump:

Right you are.

Can't say it, though. Would hurt too many feelings. Same way with academics. But, that's for another thread.

Demographics in the other classes need to be addressed in my opinion too. Special education and free/reduced lunch numbers should be looked at and counted less in your enrollment in my opinion. Maybe a .75 scale would be a realistic place to start.
