Good win for Ashland! Alter has had a solid program for a long time. Love the odd border state match up by the way. Wish more schools would play these type of games.

Coach Hall is the only inside hire I could see being given the keys to the program. He was a stand out Red Devil player and has been a loyal assistant coach for yeeeaars. Truthfully he’s earned it. But with so many kids leaving the program recently I’m not sure this hire stays in house. If Hall doesn’t get it and several of the names listed apply then I think Wallace or Rector would be amazing gets. Someone mentioned Clevenger at Somerset (formerly Danville and Henderson). He would be a great get too if he was interested.

Justin Johnson(6’7 Power Forward/Class of 2014/Perry County Central)- Graduated sixth all time in state history in total rebounds with 1519. 1st team All State as a Senior. Named a KY All Star after graduation. Signed with WKU and lead them in scoring and rebounding for 3 straight years. (First player to do that since Scottsville’s Jim McDaniels did it from 1968-1971.) Was second team Conference USA as a junior and first team Conference USA as a senior. Finished #10 all time in scoring at WKU with 1715 points and #5 all time in rebounding with 1057 boards. One of only 5 players to accomplish 1000 & 1000 as a Hilltopper. Played professionally over seas.

I am surprised Dereon Crowe isn’t being talked up more for Owensboro Catholic. Kid is listed at 6’2 210 and he is a big time athlete! Plays physical and with a lot of heart. Crowe transferred over from Owensboro Senior High and according to the KHSAA sight had 49 catches for 901 yards receiving. 21 catches went for TD’s. Plus he probably rushed for another 300-400 yards and scored TD’s on the ground as well. At one time he was committed to FCS school Illinois State. Not sure if he still intends to go there but he is a very good player that OCHS will move around a lot on offense and defense.

Kelan Martin(6’6 Small Forward/Class of 2014/Louisville Ballard)- Led Ballard to a runner up finish in the 2013 Sweet Sixteen as a Junior. Losing to Dominique Hawkins and Kenjah Bosley(very underrated as well) of Madison Central. 1st team all state and KY All Star participant as a Senior. Signed with Butler University. 1st team All Big East as a Senior. Averaging 21 ppg. Was 2nd team All Big East as a Sophomore and Junior. 2nd all time in career points at Butler with 2,000+ points scored. Went unselected in the 2018 NBA draft. But has appeared in 96 career games with the Timberwolves, Pacers, & Celtics.

Terry Taylor (6’5 Small Forward/Class of 2017/Bowling Green)- Helped BG to 4 straight Sweet 16’s. Including a runner up to Owensboro in 2015 and a state title win in 2017 vs Cooper. Winning Sweet 16 MVP as a Senior. Named a KY All Star after graduating. Ultimately signed with Austin Peay and is an all time great there. Averaging 19 ppg and 9 rebounds per game for his career. Governors all time leading scorer passing another underrated Kentuckian in Bubba Wells from Russellville, KY. Taylor won OVC player of the Year twice. And was 1st team All Conference every year he was in college. He didn’t get selected in the NBA draft of 2021 but has played in 95 career games for the Pacers and Bulls. Currently plays for the Stockton Kings in the G League.

Tyler Brown (6’2 guard/Class of 2008/Owensboro Apollo)- Led Apollo to an unexpected runner-up finish in the Sweet 16 as a Sophomore. Losing to J-Town 61-58 in the finals. Brown was named to the All Tourney team for his efforts in Rupp. After being named a KY All Star, in 2008, he led the team to a win over Indiana at the Louisville Gardens. Brown hit 5 three pointers and finished as the leading scorer with 19 points. (The win broke an 8 year drought for KY. But it also was the beginning of a 9 year drought! Ouch!!) After sitting out a year at Morehead St. Brown found his way to Marshalltown, Iowa Junior Collge. Where he was a 2nd team D1 All American in 2011 after averaging 21 ppg as a Sophomore. He signed with Illinois St. over Wichita St and went on to average 13 ppg as a Junior and was named to the Missouri Valley All Newcomer team. He then averaged 18 ppg as a Senior and was named 2nd team All Missouri Valley. He seemed to always show up when playing Power Conference teams or ranked opponents. Scoring 25 at #5 Louisville. 36 against Northwestern. 26 against Ole Miss. 24 against Stanford. 25 against #14 Wichita St. And 27 against #16 Creighton. Brown scored 1,000+ career points in his 2 years in Bloomington,IL. After graduating Brown played in the NBA summer league for the San Antonio Spurs. Then in the NBA D League for the Maine Red Claws. Scoring a career high 32 points vs the Iowa Energy. He also played briefly in France. Very very underrated player IMO.

There is some smoke out there that the Hampton family may be leaving Owensboro….if this is true OHS has went from a state contender to probably not winning their district. WOW!!

Some of the WKY kids that are good enough to be on this team are Lawson Rice(Butler County), Duece Bailey(Bowling Green),& Keaton Hughes(Owensboro).

Does anybody know of any Indiana kids have had this issue? Seems like they get their kids to this game.

Winstead transferred down to a school in Florida last I heard. The Crowe and Maddux kids went to Owensboro Catholic. Even with the losses Owensboro should be really good. They’re not beating BG at BG. And probably aren’t winning at Owensboro Catholic. But I’ll be surprised if they don’t win every other game.

Moss went back to DC where he played as an 8th grader. Then they also got a 6’6-6’7 transfer in from Madisonville.

Henderson has been flying under the radar all year. I’ll get to see them live later in the year.

Kenyatta Carbon (Owensboro SR High/Lindsey Wilson) Averaging 16 ppg 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Curious if you young man stays at Lindsey Wilson or attempts to play at a higher level.

Is Elijah Clinton still at Western??

I believe it's the offensive philosophy. This has been one the biggest complaints from fans, and parents, for years. Tons of Red Devil fans believe OHS should resemble Bowling Green,Mayfield, Owensboro Catholic,etc. on offense. Run right on first down. Run second on 2nd down. Then play action pass on 3rd down, under heavy blitz pressure, has grown old on Frederica Street. I personally think OHS has had several kids underutilized on offense in the last 5-10 years....

Owensboro blew the doors off of South Warren in the playoffs and the Red Devils return like 16 starters. I think they should be ranked above the Spartans.

Mr BBall, Brandon Davenport, played on that 1997 Owensboro team. Eventual state champion Louisville Eastern got upset early in that tourney. Was really wanting see Owensboro play them in the title game.

I believe Gonzaga (D.C.) played Owensboro Senior High for the title in 1985. Owensboro would go on to lose in the semifinals of the Sweet 16 to eventual champion Pulaski County. Long time Red Devil fans are still upset behind that game.
