Can someone elaborate? I haven't heard of only 6 points scored by one team in a high school basketball game. Something is seriously wrong.

Two points to be made about the quoted text. 1) Massillon Washington is most often referred to as just Massillon, never as Washington. In fact, I didn't know it had a second name until the last few years. In NE Ohio the team is known as the Massillon Tigers. And an additional note, it is pronounced as MASS-lun. 2) Eighty of their victories came with Paul Brown as the Head Coach from 1932-1940. His total included a 35 game win streak. The Tigers also won another 15 games when Paul Brown was the Quarterback in 1924 and 25. The QB the previous year was Harry Stuhldreher who became one of Notre Dames famed Four Horseman. Other notable coaches include Earl Bruce who went 20-0 in his two seasons at Massillon in 1964-65 and later was Head Coach at The Ohio State University. Another recognizable name is Lee Tressel, father of Jim Tressel, and a long-time Head Coach at Baldwin-Wallace College. Tressel was 16-3 during his two-year tenure as the Tigers Head Coach. That was a good win for LaSalle over a storied program and as is pointed out in the post I quoted, it speaks well of the program Mayfield has maintained over a long history to remain ahead in total victories.

Maybe Kentucky Christian will pick up some of the players with scholarships. High school grads in the class of 2020 who were leaning towards CCU may want to take a look at Taylor University. It is not that far away, about 3 hrs, in Upland, IN, is a serious academic school (ranked #1 Regional College in Midwest by US News & World Report), Evangelical Christian, and an upgrade in football (still NAIA).

Conner was established in 1970. This is the reason I didn't mention Conner in my explanation of the talent draw in my first post. BCHS was still having success in football into the 1990s and 2000s until both Ryle and Cooper were established. That is when the real talent draw began. I agree that demographics isn't the only reason as the issue is complex. But demographics is a major reason. Neither Cov Cath or Beechwood are good counter arguments since they draw from across NKY.

Well, recently the school hung up flags representing the many nations of the world where the student's hail from, 20+ different flags. These students don't care much about American football. For others, the economics of daily life make having time for extra curricular activities difficult. Parents have less interest in sending the kids to get training at some of the very fine (and expensive) athletic training businesses. Compare this with those families moving into Triple Crown and along Long Branch. Very different demographics that represent different needs, interests, values, and means to provide their children with opportunities in sports. I don't know specific demographics, but I do know from living here that the socio-economic portrait of the area is changing, education level, number of students getting free lunch, etc. The school system has to do more and more for students not meeting basic educational goals set by the state, etc. Plus, part of the original question had to do with why the glory years ended and Boone is falling on hard times. Adding two high schools in the area is a big part of that. We no longer draw those big farm boys that used to open up holes for all those running plays Owen Hauck called.

Well... they changed coaches this season but have the same results they've had since about 2012 or so. We should give this new coach more time before drawing any conclusions on him. So, let's look at talent. With first Ryle (1992), then Cooper (2007) being built in the area that Boone County High School used to draw students from, some of Boone's talent is now going to other high schools. Then consider where the housing growth is in Boone County... South and West. That is, Boone County High School's district is not receiving a high percentage of the new growth. Older neighborhoods have a higher percentage of non-school-aged residents. So, new talent is not coming in at the same rate as in the school districts that are seeing new growth. Because this trend is noted by sports families, many of them move to the district they think will be best for their son or daughter in the long run. Others just find a way for their child to attend a school other than Boone County. This does not make for a winning formula at Boone so students who may be at Boone do not have the pride in the team that they may have had if the team was winning, so you see some talent just not go out for the team. All of that to say there is a lag in talent at Boone County. Perhaps the new coaching staff can begin to turn things around and attract talent to the team. Let's give them that opportunity, but demographics are not helping them at this time. I have not been to a Boone game in several weeks but there was a huge uptick in the size of the crowd at Boone games through September. I will give the new coach credit for generating interest in the fan base. Maybe this means things are heading in the right direction. I sincerely hope so. Beginning to win will help.

I don't disagree with you, @OGRaidersman. But I CANNOT make my finger click the Poll for Ryle.

Lloyd lost a lot of talent to graduation. Boone lost some talent and leadership from last year's seniors, but not as much as Lloyd. Boone had some solid sophomores starting last season who are stepping up this year. I like the defense I saw from Boone in the last half of the Holmes games. But Lloyd's win over Walton Verona and a low score loss against Scott speak for them in this contest. This game may be in doubt late in the game, but I'm going with Boone.

Beechwood got out to an early lead then Paintsville started to come back. At one point before the half the score was 14-13 Beechwood. The blue Tigers went ahead in the 4th quarter, up 19-14. Beechwood mounted a drive with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game. They got down to the Paintsville 6 yard line. I believe it was third down and Beechwood snapped the ball. The pass rush was on, RB/CB Cole Stammer went through a crease and got beyond the line of scrimmage just outside of the left tackle and turned around. Hergott lobbed him a short pass. Stammer caught it and secured the ball as he spun around and scampered into the end zone. It was a tremendous call and the two skill players executed it to perfection. Touchdown Beechwood to take the lead! Unfortunately (for Beechwood), a penalty was called that erased the TD. Beechwood then turned the ball over on downs. Paintsville held on for the win. I want to mention three key factors in this loss for Beechwood. The first is the beef up front. Painstville had some big boys that play both ways and this took a toll over the course of the game. By the end of the 2nd quarter, Paintsville's size seemed to wear on the Red Tigers. I sensed a change in the momentum to Paintsville and I think it was largely due to this factor. The second thing I will mention are the injuries. It was previously mentioned that the injuries were to LB/RBs. The center of the field is a rather important part of the game. I believe this will impact next week's game and beyond. The third item was the QB sacks that Paintsville got in the 4th quarter. They had some earlier in the game but these were critical. I believe the QB could have gotten rid of the ball rather than take the sack on several occasions. That being said, Hergott had several really good runs, even scoring twice, and had Beechwood in position to win the game. He directed the drive at the 5-minute mark and threw the pass that could have been the game winner, but it wasn't meant to be. He did his part to win this game. Congratulations to Paintsville. The relief and happiness on their faces when the final gun sounded told you that they knew they were in a game they could have easily lost.

Ryle was playing a very difficult opponent in all phases of the game. Perhaps another week will allow them to regroup and have an opportunity to play "their game." The QB may have more opportunity to get into the flow of the game which will help his production. The RBs may have more opportunity to run north and south instead of stringing it out to the sideline. This combination will allow Ryle to be more competitive this week, offensively. The defense won't have to contend with Cov Cath's O-line, so that will be a plus. Now, Conner is not going to roll over and let this happen. But I think the game will be a little more competitive than what one saw last week from Ryle.

Thanks for your thoughts here. I haven't seen Cooper yet this year but when I heard he moved to WR I wondered how having him touch the ball fewer times would be a positive, unless the new QB was already a finished product. Speaking of staff, someone mentioned Cooper's defense earlier, I heard there is a new but very familiar face on the defensive side of the ball, no?

The big news of this game is the size of the crowd. I have never seen a Boone stadium this full. The parking lot was so full they were parking in any spot of open grass that could be found all the way out to the tennis courts along Burlington Pike. I have never seen it like this at Boone. Years ago when I first moved here I heard about Boone football, the good old days with Sean Alexander, etc. Then I went to the game and my first impression walking into the stadium was, where is everybody. Back home, our stadium was rocking on Friday nights and you better get there early if you didn't want to have to walk a half a mile or more. So, it was fantastic to see the crowd and hear them cheering from outside the stadium. Somebody did a good job promoting this game. I was only able to catch the second half but the Boone defense looked to be doing a decent job. There were some plays when a Holmes skill player would get outside and outrun everybody, but for the most part the defense played well. Holmes did have a chance to get a score late in the game, which could have been followed by an onside kick, but none of that happened. Unfortunately, for Holmes, instead of hitting the hole when they were on the one yard line, the young man stutter-stepped around looking for a gap. The Boone defense found him and put an end to Holmes' chances. I liked what I saw from the defensive side of the ball for the Rebels. The defense had some attitude. They were laying the wood and swarming to the ball. I really didn't see a lot from the offense. They had scored all their points by the time I arrived. This was a feel-good win for the Rebels and a great way to start the season--undefeated. Boone has played Holmes the last three years leading to these results: 27-6 in 2017, 49-0 in 2018, and 20-6 in 2019, all wins for Boone County. While it was good to get this win, I don't think we learned a lot about the team, yet. We did learn that there is enthusiasm for the Rebels among the fans. And that is a good thing. Hopefully, they can build on this momentum going into next week. Good luck to the Rebels against Dunbar and to the Bulldogs against Grant County.

Expectations for each team. Cov Cath is expecting to challenge for a 5A state title. Ryle is expecting to improve over last season.

As to interest in soccer on BGP, several of the more prolific and knowledgeable posters have kids that aged out of their high school programs. Mine did from Boone in 2016. As someone who never played soccer, I was passionate about the sport when my kids played but now that they're not I will sometimes go out of curiosity, but the passion is not there. Not like it is for other sports that I have had some personal experience in playing.

I would also be interested to know how England looked at RB. Wishing him a good season.

Great interviews, men! I really enjoyed this episode. Great Crossings Kalib Perry sounds like he has his head on straight and is very well-spoken. I wish that young man a great and healthy season. It looked like he threw you a bit when you asked him what he listened to to get hyped for the game. K-Love didn't quite push your buttons like when Trenton Allen answered Metallica :lol2::lol2::ylsuper: Coach McKee's got it going at Scott County. Loved his response to what it was like coaching his son. Most coaches say they don't treat him any differently. Every player knows that isn't so. Some times, they are a lot harder on their own. But Coach McKee is honest that it's not just another player he is coaching. There is something special between a father and son and he isn't going to pretend. I really respect him for saying, "The #1 characteristic for me personally is that I would be a good father." Kudos Coach McKee. There's going to be extra excitement in Scott County this year with both programs teeing off. Thank you @Big Things Kentucky!

I saw that episode when it originally aired. Majors graduated from EKU, as well. He played football but a back injury ended his athletic career.

There are three possible explanations... 1. If the shooter had hit the alleged Bigfoot he would have been held for murder because they would have found a human inside a gorilla-like suit lying dead beside the tent. 2. The shooter, soon, will be unable to purchase a firearm because there will be a red flag beside his name on the firearm background check list as he is diagnosed with some form of mental illness with delusions. 3. He lied and is seeking publicity for his favorite hoax. 4. There is no fourth possibility. My best guess is #3.
