Congrats La Salle.

So, "are they still overrated?"

Congrats to LaSalle, beating Massillon up in Canton is no easy task! Really happy for the Lancers.

Not overrated at all, lost 2 games this year to championship caliber teams. It was a shame that Winton Woods had a team cancel a game with them that ultimately kept them out of the playoffs. But LaSalle beat Elder and in my opinion, Elder was the team to beat this year in Greater Cincinnati.

Wasn't directed at you -- sorry to be unclear. When CovCath beat LaSalle, someone said they were "an overrated team." Just having some fun.

Agree with you, LaSalle's win over Elder was VERY impressive, as they are on the verge of a potential D1 Championship.

LaSalle out rushed the Tigers 337-82. The Lancers controlled the lines of scrimmage.

Wow! This also makes La Salle’s fourth state championship in ten years.

Glad to see that for 2 reasons.

1. It makes Kentucky and CovCath look really good.

2. Mayfield came into the season 2 wins alltime ahead of Washington. Washington was 14-0 up until the loss last night and Mayfield has lost one game. So now even if Mayfield loses tomorrow they will still be one win ahead for 4th on the alltime national wins list.

Mayfield got #900 last week against Beechwood. Washington sits at 899.

Congrats again to Covington Catholic for that awesome win and their great season up to this point.

Instant replay played a part in LaSalle's first touchdown. Runner was marked down at the 1 yard line by the refs, but play was ruled a touchdown by the replay booth. This is the first year Ohio has used replay for the championship games.

Two points to be made about the quoted text.

1) Massillon Washington is most often referred to as just Massillon, never as Washington. In fact, I didn't know it had a second name until the last few years. In NE Ohio the team is known as the Massillon Tigers. And an additional note, it is pronounced as MASS-lun.

2) Eighty of their victories came with Paul Brown as the Head Coach from 1932-1940. His total included a 35 game win streak. The Tigers also won another 15 games when Paul Brown was the Quarterback in 1924 and 25. The QB the previous year was Harry Stuhldreher who became one of Notre Dames famed Four Horseman.

Other notable coaches include Earl Bruce who went 20-0 in his two seasons at Massillon in 1964-65 and later was Head Coach at The Ohio State University. Another recognizable name is Lee Tressel, father of Jim Tressel, and a long-time Head Coach at Baldwin-Wallace College. Tressel was 16-3 during his two-year tenure as the Tigers Head Coach.

That was a good win for LaSalle over a storied program and as is pointed out in the post I quoted, it speaks well of the program Mayfield has maintained over a long history to remain ahead in total victories.

Now let's see if Ironton can beat Kirtland for the Division V Title.

Ashland handed Ironton their only loss earlier this year.

Thanks for all info. I was always under the impression it was Washington High School but it's just located in Massillon OH. Had no idea that it was pronounced that way. I guess kind of like Louisville KY. Out of staters pronounce it 10 different ways.

And yes I have looked at the history of their program and they are top notch nationally in every way. Pretty sure they have multiple "national championships' from way back. By no means would I ever say Mayfield is a better program than Massilon. I just enjoy keeping up with the all time win list because we are so high up there.

Louisville Male, one of he 3 teams we are chasing in all time wins, is 14-0 this year entering the championship game so there will be no ground made up on them this year whether either of the teams win or lose this weekend.

Another factoid is that while Massillon Washington has numerous AP voted state championships (pre-playoff era), they have not won an Ohio title on the field since Ohio went to a playoff system.

I honestly thought once Mayfield passed them in wins they would fade off in the rearview mirror considering Mayfield is small school KY and and Massillon is big boy Ohio football. Was very surprised when I saw they were 14-0 coming into this week. Good to see they are doing well.

I was born and raised in Stark County, and I, too, didn't know they had the "Washington" as part in their name, until just a few years ago. It was always just the "Massillon Tigers" (and you heard about them a lot in the early 80's when Chris Spielman was there).

But, I will beg to differ with you on the pronunciation of it. I have always heard it as MASS-uh-lun. (Now, some people may slur that middle syllable into the third one pretty good. :lol2:) But, I've always heard it as a three syllable name.
