Another factoid is that while Massillon Washington has numerous AP voted state championships (pre-playoff era), they have not won an Ohio title on the field since Ohio went to a playoff system.

 

Based on some things I've read about them this season, a lot of people thought this was "their year" to finally get that proverbial monkey off their back. I've got nothing against LaSalle, but I was hoping Massillon would get it done last night.

I was born and raised in Stark County, and I, too, didn't know they had the "Washington" as part in their name, until just a few years ago. It was always just the "Massillon Tigers" (and you heard about them a lot in the early 80's when Chris Spielman was there).

 

But, I will beg to differ with you on the pronunciation of it. I have always heard it as MASS-uh-lun. (Now, some people may slur that middle syllable into the third one pretty good. :lol2:) But, I've always heard it as a three syllable name.

You may be right about the pronunciation. I'm a country boy from up that way and sometimes when we slow our speech a little we will give a slight nod to the "i" in Massillon. But when combining it with the school mascot we just slur right past that "i" to MASS-lun. :lol2:

I guess it's kind of the same deal with Ashland KY. Their school is Paul G. Blazer High School but they are usually referred to as just Ashland or maybe Ashland Blazer. Never just "Blazer."

I will give my two reasons for being happy:

 

1. Cause CovCath beat them.

 

2. Because up here in NKY we are a part of the greater Cincinnati area and I worked with some LaSalle grads (one is a very dear friend) and as far as I am concerned the Lancers are one of my home town teams.

 

Did I mention Covington Catholic beat LaSalle.

Jackson or Massillon Jackson. Jackson is actually a township in Stark County.

 

They used to have a really good wrestling team, btw.

My high school used to be in the same conference with Jackson (the Federal League), and it was, and still is (to the best of my knowledge) always referred to as just Jackson.

 

It seems that when you're talking on a state level, often times there'll be a location-reference tied to the high school name...Cleveland St. Ed, Cincinnati Elder, etc. But, yet the school name itself, locally, doesn't include that reference. You watch the Cleveland news Friday nights and they talk about St. Ed highlights, you know who they're talking about. Same thing with Cincinnati stations and Elder. When my high school made it to the state quarterfinals several years back, I'd see it listed as Alliance Marlington, which was really weird...because there's an Alliance High School and a Marlington High School (which is who they were talking about). But, we NEVER included Alliance in any of our school references, because we were us, and they were them...if you know what I mean.

 

But, what's odd about this case about Massillon, is that they NEVER used the school name...it was always just the city. If you saw Massillon beat Glenoak on TV or in the Saturday morning paper box score, you knew it was the Tigers they were talking about (not Jackson). It's not like everyone knew it as Washington High School and they suddenly started adding the Massillon to it. Just the opposite.

 

Hope that makes sense.

Congrats to LaSalle, beating Massillon up in Canton is no easy task! Really happy for the Lancers.
