Cincinnati Christian University to close

Featured Replies

CCU announced it will be closing for good as of January 2020. Since several current Kentucky kids hold football offers from there I figured it was news of some value.

Sad to hear for those that have scholarships offers to go to school their. Plus for the kids that are their now.

Those players should look into Denison.

Not that there is anything wrong with Denison, but there are lots of quality schools that are even closer to the Cincinnati Area.

Maybe Kentucky Christian will pick up some of the players with scholarships. High school grads in the class of 2020 who were leaning towards CCU may want to take a look at Taylor University. It is not that far away, about 3 hrs, in Upland, IN, is a serious academic school (ranked #1 Regional College in Midwest by US News & World Report), Evangelical Christian, and an upgrade in football (still NAIA).

Thanks for the info @WestDanville! Ironically a buddy and I were talking about his son's college choices last night and Cinci Christian was mentioned, so he must not have known that they are closing.

Risk that these small colleges have. Football is important to increase enrollment for many of them, which help fund the school. Good luck to all associated.

This really shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone. CCU's demise has been a rumor that's been floating around for a couple years now, and with an enrollment of a little over 500 students, it's a little bit of a shock that this didn't happen sooner.

So sad. 95 years to end in such a way. Never able to develop a strong sustaining endowment as many other Christian schools have been able to do.

Weird. My son got a tweet from their Coach on Sunday saying they were 100% interested in him.

I have a friend whose son is a freshman football player there. Hate that this is happening!

That's what I thought was odd myself. My friends son also got an email on sunday. Seems like the coaches weren't aware that the school is shutting down.

I know some of the professors up there and both of my parents are graduates. The trouble started about 20 years ago when the college mission changed a little bit. It used to be called "Cincinnati Bible College & Seminary" but in an effort to get more money they wanted to offer more liberal art programs and became Cincinnati Christian University. As a result, some of the big churches did not financially support them as much.

In order to get more students, they started adding more programs and more sports. When this happened the traditional bible college setting was kind of lost. In 2007 they stopped offering preaching as a major. As the years went by, the local Christian churches stopped sending their high school graduates there. As a result of that, tuition sky rocketed and they started to "spend money in order to make money" by building and rehabbing new buildings and canceling some of there bible programs.

Then they began taking more open stances on church and denominationalism when they were founded as a non-denominational restoration Christian Church College. So there were more baptists, Pentecostals, and vineyard people attending. When that happened, the local restoration christian churches pulled even more of their financial support and parents quit pushing a Bible College education towards the youth groups.

Eventually staff was cut, programs were cut, and tuition kept going up. They had a chance to merge with Johnson Bible College six years ago, but Johnson did not want to assume their debt.

It is a vicious cycle. You need more money, so you open your doctrine a little, the people that liked the doctrine closed quit supporting, you have to raise tuition...... and then you close your doors. It is a beautiful campus though.

Did not know all of that. Thanks PP1!

I roomed at CBC back in '87 when I was going to UC. At that time, I believe the only sport they offered was basketball. And that was just after the glory years they had with Charlie McMahan leading the way. (I had the good fortune to have Charlie as our youth minister intern when I was still in high school, then attend his church down in Grant County when I came to Cincinnati.) Sad to see the school end this way.

Agree wholeheartedly on the campus look. It's view of downtown at night is spectacular.

Golf coaches for men’s and women’s golf were just hired a month ago.
