Cincinnati Christian University to close

Featured Replies

Sorry to hear they are closing. I have a friend who went there longer ago. My last time there was for a professional seminar four years ago. To those who haven’t seen it, it is a beautiful campus, especially at nighttime looking over Cincinnati.

Weird. My son got a tweet from their Coach on Sunday saying they were 100% interested in him.

It happened Monday. Kind of sounds like everyone in the athletic department was blindsided. I know the basketball team was. Apparently the enrollment was down to around 500. If you think football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, track, etc, I wonder how may, if any, students that were left were non athletes.

It really is a great campus scenery wise.... but so was St Catherine.

I know some of the professors up there and both of my parents are graduates. The trouble started about 20 years ago when the college mission changed a little bit. It used to be called "Cincinnati Bible College & Seminary" but in an effort to get more money they wanted to offer more liberal art programs and became Cincinnati Christian University. As a result, some of the big churches did not financially support them as much.

In order to get more students, they started adding more programs and more sports. When this happened the traditional bible college setting was kind of lost. In 2007 they stopped offering preaching as a major. As the years went by, the local Christian churches stopped sending their high school graduates there. As a result of that, tuition sky rocketed and they started to "spend money in order to make money" by building and rehabbing new buildings and canceling some of there bible programs.

Then they began taking more open stances on church and denominationalism when they were founded as a non-denominational restoration Christian Church College. So there were more baptists, Pentecostals, and vineyard people attending. When that happened, the local restoration christian churches pulled even more of their financial support and parents quit pushing a Bible College education towards the youth groups.

Eventually staff was cut, programs were cut, and tuition kept going up. They had a chance to merge with Johnson Bible College six years ago, but Johnson did not want to assume their debt.

It is a vicious cycle. You need more money, so you open your doctrine a little, the people that liked the doctrine closed quit supporting, you have to raise tuition...... and then you close your doors. It is a beautiful campus though.

Some of this is accurate. Some of it is not.

Preaching was offered as a major even this year.

The trouble really started back in the 80’s with financial mismanagement.

Everyone was but everyone wasn’t. The show-cause order from the accreditation was writing on the wall. It was going to be a tough turn around. So people were blindsided maybe but certainly not surprised.
