Not really. I agree that there are admins who are problems. No doubt. I've seen it. I just disagree with the premise that they are the majority of the problem. I don't think that is the tone of what the KHSAA is saying here. But, believe me, it would not be the first time I've disagreed with the August Body that is known as the KHSAA.

Sorry, but I'm going to disagree with you and mcpapa. I in no way am saying that there aren't some admins who do indeed ignore these situations, there certainly are, but I feel quite confident in saying they are very much in the minority. It IS obvious when these situations are ignored, I'll also give you that, but a good administrator tries to make this kind of confrontation as anonymous as possible so maybe you just don't see it as often when interventions are made. Also, don't discount the fact that those same folks blowing up on the officials tend to do the same thing to anyone who tries to put them in check. Believe me, I know.

Good for them. To state the obvious, 42 states haven't. I'm with the 42.

There will never be a shot clock in high school basketball and there never should be a shot clock. High school sports are not played for the enjoyment of the spectators, it's played to teach the game and compete. Varying tactics emphasize varying skills and skill levels. Learn to appreciate every tactic for what it is worth or for the mistake that it might be. The game has never been about playing at one speed and it shouldn't be while high school kids are learning the game still. College and up, it's all about marketing their sport and TRYING (in most cases) to make money. If a coach uses the tactic too soon, or some cases, not soon enough, then that's on the coach.

I know a little something about small school athletics and I can tell you with virtual certainty, the scenarios a couple of you are suggesting are completely out of the question. First of all, what you are suggesting is the epitome of a rules violation for the KHSAA. Moving your student strictly to be a starter on a football team? Are you listening to yourselves? Have there been anomalies? Yes, but very, very few. Getting 10 to 12 anomalies? At one school? Uh, not going to happen. Coaching at small schools requires patience, perseverance, a positive attitude and a dedication to the sport and to the kids that goes beyond even those strong traits already found in most coaches.

There sure are a lot of assumptions being made here. Who said he did or didn't WANT to come back? Who said he did or didn't WANT to leave? We're talking about a kid here, and not some college-age kid either. Kids are subject to all kinds of advice, decision-makers, guidance, whatever. Unless you know the kid, what makes you so certain he should be punished or even slightly scolded for the events that took place? We sure are judgmental lately.

Wow. Perhaps one of the LEAST legitimate concerns I've heard recently. Some school districts have the ability to fund upgraded athletics facilities and some really don't. So, that should prevent them from the opportunity to host a playoff? Some make the playoffs regularly and know how to handle the crowds, etc. and some make it rarely and don't have that expertise, so they shouldn't be allowed to learn from experience. Is this really what we've come to? Sorry but I have no sympathy for this complaint.

Stepping onto Soap Box. It's time to have a frank examination of the role that the KHSAA plays in Kentucky interscholastic sports. ALL sports. Sitting back and allowing the status quo to continue to exist simply because "that's how it's always been" or the even more lame excuse of "one true state champion" is beyond indefensible. The KHSAA needs to examine not only it's operation of state-wide competition, but also its policies toward membership, student-athlete regulation and general operations. We have allowed non-transparency and hidden agendas to exist far too long. It will take a few Superintendents with some kahones to make this happen however. And NO, I'm not going the route of public vs. private because I have NO ISSUE there. Exit Soap Box.

Knee jerk Guru, unless you know more than you're letting on. Which, I have no doubt that you do. If the soccer situation occurred and nothing was done, then that is grounds for dismissal. Same with the fight situation. Give the head coach the opportunity to prove his professionalism or his lack thereof. If nothing corrective is done, then yes, by all means, fire the coach. The assistant, however, gone baby, bye bye.

No one has ever suggested that classifying a sport should restrict who a team can play. It only truly matters come district and statewide play-off games. That could be as few as 3 to 4 total games or more depending on performance. Most programs that I know play at least that many games outside their immediate region every year. A few don't, I get that, but for the common good of the sport, and competition among teams, classification just simply makes more sense. The excuse that no money will be made? Really? How much does softball produce now? High school athletics, for the most part, have not been, are not now and likely never will be, a profit making venture. Interscholastic sports is an educational tool, not a minicamp for college scholarships, nor a showcase for future professional stars. High school softball should be classified, just like every other sport in this state.

1. Having District & Conference scheduling requirements can handcuff schools from putting together a more challenging schedule. Non competitive matches is the result. You bristled at the suggestion that your plan was aimed solely at the higher level teams yet you make this statement that clearly does not consider the middle to lower level teams in terms of talent. Is a more competitive environment ONLY for what you consider to be the "upper level" teams? I coach at one of the perceived "have nots" and we absolutely relish the opportunity to play against the local powers. We get better EVERY TIME we play a game like that. Yes, we've taken some absolute beatings, and we're better for it. EVERY TIME. Small schools were basically shamed into voting FOR district seeding (I voted in favor by the way) and now the resulting match-ups are being questioned by some (specifically you) as to the value for those teams that are stronger. It cannot be both ways. Don't like the Conference set-up? Easy answer, drop out. But when you do, remember that the school drops out in ALL sports, not just soccer. An occasional blow-out is hardly worth being concerned about. Play the back-ups, work on skill development, work on defense, bring up freshmen. there are plenty of alternatives when you have a program that is that strong.
