Actually, not correct. They had a very good team but lost to CovCath in first round of the then two round NKY freshman playoffs (had East & West divisions that year). They beat eventual frosh champion Highlands at home during regular season.

Did Kenton County change its open enrollment policy? I thought SK took anybody (although recognize more-like Durham--choose to go elsewhere than choose to come in).

Where will the Highlands game be played? That is a long trip for a regular season game (325 miles so probably a 6+ hour bus ride) I would think that may be a Saturday game unless they are meeting in middle somwhere.

In the interest of fairness to the Cardinals I should have mentioned that they usually play an early season tilt in a local annual fundraising event for a local quasi-celeb which understandably limits the number of games they have available to play the Rocks in a home and away series. But again they need to understand it makes it harder for them to reach their coach's stated goal of winning state championships when they duck teams like Trinity. Maybe that fundraising event can work to bring these two together in the future. Somebody should call the organizer or his friend from the office and see if he make it happen or at least comment on it.

CardinalsFan last post leads us to another interesting topic that seemed to deserve its own thread. Why does Colerain refuse to play Louisville Trinity? Need help from the Cardinal insiders on this one. I don't get it that they have never played Louisville Trinity. Trinity has only 9 games on its schedule again this year and yet Colerain still won't play them. All the GCL powers stepped up to the plate as usual but not Colerain. They just keep ducking. I just don't get it but for whatever reason they choose not to ever play the Louisville powerhouse. What gives? Trinity is good enough for the entire GCL but not Colerain? It's stuff like that that rubs people the wrong way when it comes to Colerain (that and their inability to win state championships--perhaps there is correlation). This is a game that they should be a part of every, single year. There is simply no good reason not to play it but Colerain appears to be "too good" to be involved in a game like this. Can anyone provide some insight here? Thanks.

Really, please name some public schools the size of Highlands (approx. 100 boys per grade) that play a national or semi-national (whatever that is) schedule. I am not aware of any much less "most teams". Also, why would they travel 2 or more hours to play teams that are of the similar or less quality than local teams less than an a half hour away? More expensive for the schools, more hardship for their fans with no additional benefit to the kids or the team. Actually, I do wish they would play some of the large Cincinnati area public schools (e.g., Anderson, Mason, Sycamore, etc.) or good Cincinnati area teams of comparable school size but unfortunately the Ohio Harbin playoff system discourages the Ohio schools from playing that type of game (so I get why they don't want to take that chance as they have more to lose than just bragging rights of the game--although it also seems to me that a bubble or near playoff team would likewise have more to gain from a win against a Harbin Point cow like Highlands that might help them make the playoffs). So that leaves only the GCL South teams and for them it is a no brainer to play Highlands as their alternative game is to travel 2 to 4 hours every other year to play a game against other larger schools who in most years would be better than Highlands as they struggle to fill out a 10 game regular season schedule. So I don't see it so much as a "love affair with the GCL" (your words) so much as the only local games they can find against great competition against teams that struggle with a similar issue so that makes it a match of convenience that works for both sides.

Wirth, a former Moeller player and assistant coach, was on the 1992 Moeller team that lost in an upset to CovCath in a meeting between the schools. Moeller leads the all-time series between the schools 8-1, according to former Moeller AD Dick Beerman. The last meeting was in 2005.

Mitchell grew up in (southern) Campbell County at least through third or fourth grade maybe longer so he is from this area. Someone made reference to him living with his aunt and uncle so I expect he has family here and they are moving back rather than moving to this area. He was a nice athlete as a kid back then (in football, baseball and basketball) but I haven't seen him since then. Best wishes to him in his return to the area at NCC.

North Marshall (which consolidated into Marshall County) won a state title in 1959 and Sharpe (which consolidated into North Marshall) won a state title in 1938). Also Brewers (which consolidated into South Marshall which consolidated into Marshall County) won state in 1948. So Marshall County has 3 state championships under its umbrella legacy. Perhaps other participating schools may have also have had pre-consolidation titles.

We can't poll the players but based on the obvious degree of interest and emotional responses to this longest girls basketball game thread ever, I am curious what the overall BGP crowd's take would be on this. Could a mod put up a poll along the lines of (a) agree with the game plan - great strategy as it gave team its best chance to win the game in the coach's opinion (and gave team chance to win in last two minutes of game) or (b) disagree with the game plan- stall ball strategy stinks, is "undignified" and embarrassing to the players and no longer has a place in high school basketball? As for me, I am in the (a) camp and think it was a great strategy by the coach and congratulate her on trying to give her team the best chance to win the game within the rules of the game. I have frequently mentioned to a friend before this that I don't understand why more coaches of substantial underdogs don't try this or other unconventional strategies at tournament time. Back in the day (and I understand I am dating myself) this "letting the air out of the ball" game plan used to be a standard part of the strategy of the game and the fact that nobody seems to try it any more should make it even more effective (as apparently from the comments the NDA coach did not make adjustments to force the tempo of the game which is the obvious adjustement counter strategy and amazingly to me played into by having her team hold the ball while only up a relatively small margin). This strategy was good enough for Dean Smith at UNC to use for substantial periods at the end of a game when he has great players including Michael Jordan and Phil Ford. Of course, the adoption of the shot clock ended this strategy by the rules of the game at the college level but I never understood why high school coaches not subject to that limitation stopped taking advantage at least occasionally of the opportunity to level a very unlevel playing field (court). Also, interesting to me that a number of posters on her who frequently advocate ball control football to limit the favored football teams offensive possessions as the best strategy to wine in football think the same strategy destroys the "dignity" (please) of a basketball game. Also, where is it written what tempo a high school basketball game must be played. The opening analyst strategy comments at about half college basketball games is that the team that controls the tempo of the game wins or one team prefers a faster (or a slower) pace and needs to try to dictate tempo. Should all teams play Paul Westhead Loyola Marymount fast? No one complains if a team chooses to full court press and pressure defense the whole game (other than still pressuring when the game has become lopsided or decided). Or does NDA regularly play the only acceptable tempo at which a girls high school game should be played. It reminds me of the old George Carlin car driving bit. Anybody driving faster than me and passing me is a "maniac" and anybody driving slower than me and holding me back is an "idiot". Congrats to NDA on the win and good luck in the rest of the tourney.

District Tourney played at Dayton this year.

Highlands 2011 state championship team was recognized on the field by the Bengals (along with the Holy Cross state championship team) at their December 24 game against the Arizona Cardinals. I am pretty sure the Bengals have hosted and recognized the past 5 state championship teams from Highlands. I am certain they have the last 3 years. The Highlands football banquet is Sunday, January 29 and I understand they will have a season highlight video (that usually is unveiled/played for the first time at the banquet I believe).

I wonder how many receivers in Kentucky had 75 receptions this season. From a quick check I don't see any in Northern KY that had even 50.

So does this mean Boone County frosh only won 4 games on the field against big schools in the conference (i.e., they did not play both Dixie or Cooper) and actually only went 4-2 this season in actual games played in the conference? I understand that the Boone (and Dixie) parents really want the sons teams to be tied with the other freshman teams with 6-2 records (and I don't have a child in this group for any of the teams) but their logic is strained (at best) or mathematical fact fallacy (in reality) and their 4-2 or 5-2 (combined with refusing to pay the other team) records does not make them tied with the 3 teams that are 6-2 and actually beat 1 or 2 (50%) more teams on the field. I understand it is only freshman ball which should be primarily about player and team development (I agree with that completely) and not about championships (and related hoodies) but i do hope they fix this in the future and require teams to play each other to be part of the conference (elgible for the championship) or agree on a divisional system that suits them where teams at least play all the team in their division to determine eligibility for the championship.

Really? In your experience what sports ignore conference records in determining the conference champion? Any examples at all? It seems to me that the teams that choose not to play all the 8 other teams in the conference cost themselves the opportunity to claim a share of the title (if dixie and Boone had played one would have been eliminated and one co-champion. by not playing both ended up with 1 less win that the other 3 co-champions (Ryle, Highlands and CCH per their records). Otherwise why not proclaim Beechwood the large school conference champion as they went undefeated in their games against large schools with no losses and they shouldn't be penalized for not playing all of the teams under your theory--same logic just a matter of degree.

Actually, it seems to me if Boone wins then the winner of the Highlands-CovCath game would be the frosh champion based on their conference records (and how else would you base it with no championship game). For example, if Highlands and Boone win the confere standings would be: Highlands 7-2 Boone 6-2 Ryle 6-3 CovCath 6-3 Dixie 5-2 Obviously reverse Highlands and CCH if CCH wins and if Ryle beats Boone they would be Co-Frosh champions with the winner of the CCH-Highlands game with both having 7-2 records. Or perhaps we could just wait for the AP or coaches polls to come out to tell us who the number 1 team is.....

It seems to me that if Dixie and Boone do not play each other (and all the other teams in the conference have) that there will not be this many teams tied. Everybody seems only to be focusing on the number or losses and not the number of conference wins. If Dixie wins Dixie is 6-1 Highlands and CovCath will both be 6-2 Boone will be 5-2 (isn't that correct since they did not play Dixie?) Under that scenario Highlands and CCH are only teams tied for second and head-to-head would usually control to put Dixie and Highlands in championship If Ryle wins it seems to me that you have a 3 way tie among Ryle, CCH and Highlands all with 6-2 records that would have to be sorted out and Dixe and Boone would be eliminated with 5-2 records making them a half game back in the standings from the other 3 teams (thereby not rewarding them for not playing each other during the season which would have been an additional loss for one of the teams) Are my facts correct about the records of the teams or am I missing something?

Could someone post the freshman school records for all the large school division teams (with clarification as necessary for records against other schools in the large school division or that otherwise do or do not count)? Also, how are decisions actually made for this group, conference or whatever you want to call it? Do the schools/coaches/ADs just make the decisions as they go along? It seems like the rules change every year and nobody actually knows what they are? I recognize it is only freshman football but it is worse than the NCAA football BCS conference situation (which is saying something) albeit without all that money involved.
