  1. McCoy has thrown varsity passes including TDs last year and as Qryche pointed out last year was a key QB contributor coming in when Towles was hurt in the third quarter to key a long drive in the Dixie playoff victory as well as QBing some in I believe all of their playoff games. He also outplayed IMO Bir head to head in two freshman game Bird wins between the two teams. He also threw more TDs in 9 JV games last year than Highlands threw in 15 varsity games. I agree Mccoy likely is the 4th best QB in NKY. Just happens to be playing behind a Top 20 in the nation DI QB this year. Nice luxury to have as a backup QB. He also will be one of the best WRs in NKY this year. Looked great in the opener against Boyle including a long TD catch and run right before the half.
  2. You can watch a replay of game on ihigh http://www.ihigh.com/ckysports/broadcast_174020.html?silverlight=1
  3. Why not just Kenton? Is there another Kenton school in Ky? Or should they list all the first names, Larry Ryle, Randall Cooper, Oliver Wendell Holmes, etc.? I say from now on we refer to them on here like all the other schools--by last name only. Less confusing than Scott and Scott County.
  4. New did kick the PAT after the last TD (in the third quarter). He was out of pads dehydrated at the end of the first half (shortly after his long interception return)when Highlands scored at the end of the half so the birds went for 2 and converted.
  5. Nice win for Western. With Lone Oak's issues could Western be the favorite (or at least one of the favorites) to come out of the "Western side" in 4A? Makes Western's visit to Fort Thomas a little more interesting in a few weeks.
  6. Dixie plays both teams (presumably with Pike) the next two weeks so those results should give a better early season comparison of the two teams (although as we all know comparative scores also frequently can misleading).
  7. Same problem with the Oct. 6 Frosh home game against CovCath being the same night as the varsity travels to Pendleton County (to avoid the Woolfest rush). Anybody know if they have reschedueled that game and, if so, to what new date (perhaps night before again like the other CC game--although that messes up pregame night practice a bit-- maybe they could move it to a Friday night lights game if CovCath has a Saturday home game that week). If they kept it the same night the frosh game likely might draw more fans than the varsity (and might help reduce the Pendleton crowd/seating problem at the varsity game).
  8. Hayes has been playing RB and Hergott WR so far this Summer. I think Wrobleski also has been at RB but I am not sure if he is there or at LB. Good question because all 3 are good players capable of playing on either side of the ball.
  9. My bad. I was 20 miles off with my western Ky Class A schools that begin with an "M". Thanks for correcting the record and apologies for the thread diversion.
  10. My recollection (which might be faulty) is that the Tigers beat the Cardinals in the state finals during the Yeagle era in a game with the somewhat controversial ending where the the Beechwood QB ran back to his own endzone to run out the clock through the ball up in the air to celebrate when the final horn sounded and the ball was caught by a Mayfield defensive player in the end zone for what could have been ruled a Cardinal TD (which would have either tied or put them in the lead) but was not because the official ruled the whistle blew ending the game (??). Hopefully, I'm not stirring up trouble. Again, perhaps my memory may be faulty (and I am not a fan of either team and was not there) but perhaps some knowledgeable fan of one of the teams can confirm, deny or clarify if that was a Beechwood-Mayfield game with Beechwood coming out the winner.
  11. I agree it should be a good game between two talented teams. What are people's predictions for this game?
  12. Seems to me Q makes a good point. Not to let the facts get in the way of your reply but your description of that JV game was not consistent with my memory of that game so I checked the tape as I had it handy. Birds led 41 to 6 at half and 62 to 6 at end of third quarter. Running clock went into effect around mid-third quarter. With running clock Highland ran all of about 4 or 5 total plays in 4th quarter (one series) all of which were handoff runs to JV back up running backs and one of which was the final TD with about 5 mins left in game. All 4 second half touchdowns were by second and third string JV running backs. So unless your point is it would be hard to score 100 points on Dixie's JV (or any team) because of the running clock system in effect (or perhaps it is that you expect the rest of NKY 6A will be really down after next year) then Q makes a good point. My recollection of the freshman game was a first half running clock game and that Dixie's numbers were really low at least for that game (less than 25 players dressed but might have had injuries, illness or other reason players were missing for that game). I also agree with Q that Dixie should have a very good team in 2011 that should be able to compete well with anybody in 6A (other than perhaps Trinity which looks to be exceptional this year). I will be interested to see if Dixie and Highlands play again in 2012 or whether 2011 turns out to be the last game in this series for awhile.
  13. My understanding is that the Pendleton County game is on a Thursday night because that is the annual Woolfest weekend in Falmouth and Pendleton did not want to disrupt that event. Seriously, not a joke.
  14. Fancy Farm's gym (since consolidated wih 6 or 7 schools into Graves County) was like that. Goals mounted on the walls. Had the checkered lines at the end for throw ins. When you took the ball out as soon as you threw the ball in you were already standing in bounds so they could throw it right back to you. Had the double half court line. Also had main stands on one side. The stage for the school was on the other sideline side with team benches in front of it (kind of like old St. Henry gym) except they put a few risers with fans in them right behind the benches on the stage so they were right on top of you on the bench. Also had the listing of all the player names up on a sign at one end. Only about 4 or 5 different last names (generally only the first names changed each year with a small school with a lot of big families). At the gym at Heath we had one of the old round clocks mentioned in one of the posts (with the moving hand not digital) that lit up for the last minute of each period until about the mid '70s. very confusing for teams not used to it.
  15. Also with regard to the specialization concern, which I agree is generally a difference in high school sports today generally at all schools not a specific to Highlands issue, give me names of impact players roaming the halls of highlands high school now who would be impact varsity players for Highlands this year that are not playing because they are only playing football or specializing in another sport. Certaiinly some good athletes that could add to their team depth but I can't think of anybody who would take somebody's starting job and be a double figure scorer. Most of the players names I have seen mentioned on here for last year would have added to an already talented 8 man senior basketball class--kind of hard to carry any more seniors than that so they would have had to beat out pretty good players to keep playing (and basketball unlike football is not a no-cut sport). Again, Stinkyboy ( and others on here) have addressed the question well in that you lose most or some of the offseason work where basketball players make the all important individual improvement in their games but that becomes a choice each student-athlete makes about where to allocate their time to training and other activities and clearly the time some (many) choose to devote to football has postiively impacted their playing time and the programs success. More to my prior message to answer the thread question I don't see that there is anything wrong with Highlands basketball. It will have its ups and downs like all programs but overall compete pretty well and successfully. Probably the main difference is many more highlands posters on the BGP site relative to other schools who care about the success of the program (and who also seem to have a lot of time on their hands in the football offseason) . Otherwise , we wouldn't have a 3 page thread on highlands basketball concerns and no handwringing threads at all on the lack of any regional basketball championships by Dixe, Conner, Boone, etc over the last 15 years.
  16. Respectfully, I suppose my response is somewhat the opposite of JOATs which is tell me about the success of the basketball programs of the schools you mention (or other schools in the 9th Region) or maybe better stated what is the definition of a "successful basketball program in the 9th region". If it is regional championships we are only talking Holmes in recent years having won 4 of the last 6 regionals (the "Highlands" of local basketball recently if you will" being the dominant player locally and on a state level) Extend the lookback period say 15 years total then Highlands has 4 regional championships ('97-99 and '01) and Holmes still has the same 4 championships, CovCath has 2 ('04 and '06) and nobody else has more than 1. Of the other 4 schools you mentioned with "strong overall programs" they have a combined 2 regional basketball championships over that 15 years (NC in 2000 and Ryle in 2002) and none in the last 8 years) while Dixie and Holy Cross (and Boone, Conner, et al have come up empty--although Dixie may finally break that streak and get one this year as they have an excellent team but still the odds of them versus the field make that a less than 50-50 shot) So other than Holmes nobody is really trading off football championship success for regional basketball championship success. If, on the other hand, success in baskeball is defined as something other than regional championships, such as say fielding strong competitve teams in the region capable of competing for a regional championship then tell me the last time highlands did not do that. I believe last year's team, if it had been able to stay healthy would have been one of the deepest and best in Highlands history. They had the same team the year before (all juniors then), the year before that had McGraw and Simpson at guards (when was the last time they had 2 stating guards that good and again Simpson's broken hand cost them a reasonable shot at the region where they still made it to Regional semis with siimpson at less than 50%) before that the Jeff Vories led teams (that I believe also lost in Regional semis). A number of district championships in that stretch as well. All in all pretty competitive Highlands basketball teams IMO. Again, other than Holmes, tell me who has had more basketball success than Highlands in the 9th region over the past 15 years. I also realize the 15 years is a bit of a conveniently drawn line for highlands as that brings in its 1997-2001 run of success. But perhaps that also highlights that basketball success for highlands (and other teams) runs in cycles when you happen to have the best horses at your school. I believe even Holmes had gone 10 years (perhaps more) without a regional championship before their recent successful run starting in 2005. Prior to Highlands run that started in the late 90s it had not had a regional championship in 10 years since 1987 when it won the last of its five regional championships over a 9 year period. Before that you have to go bacxk 45 years to find another (1934) so other than those two windows of exceptional success (1997-2001 & 1979-87) that most schools would love to have in their history this is the general state of things for highlands and most successful 9th region basketball programs. I also agree with most of Stinkyboys comments above as well. I wish Coach Flynn and the Birds all the best this year. He has had perhaps the worst injury bad luck in his short 1+ year tenure of any high school basketball coach I have ever seen, yet to his credit, I have not heard him publicly use that as an excuse one time and has had a great positive attitude with the team and been supportive of all the school programs. Perhaps, as often happens, the luck will even out for him and the team and they will make a good run at it this year or the next few years. With good coaches like him (and Coach Schlarman before him) I think the basketball program is in good hands and has been and will be just fine.
  17. So they have 3 elementary schools teams and they don't even play each other. Who do they play? Or did every game end in a tie?
  18. we are your fans! I have a kitchen of moms and without you we would have to wait for our husbands' updates which are not fast enough. Thanks!! mama birds
  19. Wow, Colerain loses early and is out of the playoffs.... again. And to a 4 loss St. X team that needed other team help the last week of the season to make the playoffs and finished behind a barely decent to mediocre LaSalle (per CF, I thought they were pretty good myself) in the GCL. Congrats to the Bombers. Now I understand why CF has so much extra free time to post in the Highlands threads late in the year with his helpful advice to the Birds of how to succeed in high school football.
  20. I agree completely (both with how talented this freshman group is and the two different animail comment). That being said, I fully expect the "introduction of the freshman" by them playing at least some of the fourth quarter in this first playoff game as has become a tradition at least in recent years (the Bryan Station game year being the exception to this tradition rule).
  21. This relates to the Ryle HIghlands game how? How many championships do the Cardinals have exactly CardinalsFAn (or should I say how many less do they have than Highlands). Trying getting more than one first. Perhaps the Cardinals should focus at making their run at state championships (or at least the playoffs unlike last year when they stayed home) rather than trying to get games against schools one fourth of their size. Maybe it is Coach Bolden who should be calling Dale for advice about how to win championships at least until he gets at least one or even out of the region--hmmmm... Try a bit more humility CardinalsFan... How does that ignore profile thing work again?
  22. With respect to the game, Highlands rallied back from 12-0 first half deficit, cutting it to 12-6 with a touchdown shortly before the half to get the hard fought win against a good team (one of the Scott County fans told me that they have lost only one JV game this year). Donovan McCoy did his usual great job at QB of leading Highlands offense. Scott County showed a good diversified offense with the ability to both pass and run well in the first half with two long time consuming drives. The Cardinals QB was good with very deceptive ball fakes and passed with accuracy. Highlands coaches did a good job making adjustments at half time with the defense and I believe Scott Co's score in the second half was on a short field after a long kickoff run back to around the Highland's 20. Jake Meyers for Highlands sealed the win with a big interception with about 30 seconds to go in the game on Scott County's last drive.
