  1. We had our game cancelled this week due to a school not having enough guys to practice all week to play us because of H1N1 and the A strand of flu as well. It will be a common theme across the country, I fear.
  2. Raiders!!! They'll be bringing that barrell up through Grayson and out past Hitchins come Friday night! Go Go Go East Raiders!!!
  3. Elder 42 - Trinity 14 I hope Trinity pulls it out, but if Colerain struggled to stop these guys I can't see the Rocks doing it.
  4. I am a coach here in Texas and I played high school ball in NYC and played collegiately. I played video games and the like. I'll simply say this and allow folks to take it for what it is worth. If the kids are not making the sound, intelligent play, it is because coaches are not coaching them to do the right thing in a manner that is effective. No one comes out of the womb knowing all the rules to the game. It is a coaches job to study up on rules and changes and communicate this to players in an effective manner. That way the kid doesn't have to think about what to do, but rather reacts the way he was coached to react. Coaches must take some of the blame when a kid doesn't pick up a live ball because the coaching staff should effectively address this situation in practice. A kid's natural inclination is to grab the ball and run to daylight. The fact that the kid let the ball hit the ground tells me he was coached to let the kickoff go out of bounds if it is close. There was a gap that the coach didn't address by telling the kid he needs to fall on the ball if it doesn't get out of bounds. Coaches are teachers first and foremost. When a team continues to make silly plays, it isn't because the kid doesn't want to make the right play. Winning programs don't seem to regularly have these issues, probably because they have detail oriented coaches that teach the kids what to do in these situations. Coaches should get their share of the blame when kids don't make the sound play. JMO
  5. What type of offense are they using at Bourbon? Estill?
  6. I'm not a fan of either team and have no rooting interest either way. I think it will be very difficult for Alcoa to make the trip to log mountain and leave with a win. Bell brings the wood in all phases of the game and they have great talent. While Alcoa is a tough team also, I would pick the home team every time when these two get together (everything else being equal).
  7. This isn't true. Please note that UIL regulations allow coaches in Texas to be present at 7 on 7.
  8. That has nothing to do with the impact on spring football.:confused::confused:
  9. In Texas, we played from mid June until late July. It is NOT 2-3 months, more like a month- 6 weeks. Kids have breaks that allow them to take vacations, do summer school or college courses, attend camps, etc. It is also a 1 day a week commitment. There is not practice for the games because the games themselves are seen as practice time. It is not as intense as an interscholastic sport during the school year is, that is for sure.
  10. It hasn't impacted spring football in Texas, so I don't see why it would in Kentucky.
  11. There are state champions in 7 on 7 in Texas. There are local tourneys that qualify you for the state tourney in College Station. They seperate big schools (4A and 5A) and small schools (everyone else). I know Celina takes it all very seriously and has a large following. They have parlayed summer success (3 peat state 7 on 7 champions in the small school division) into fall championships (2007 3A state champions and 2008 runners-up) over the last few years in Texas. The only drawback are those teams that are run-oriented (wishbone, doublewing, wing-t teams) may not take it as seriously. I still think it is fun in Texas and has been a success.
  12. Hank Williams- Country Folk Can Survive TI, Kanye, Jay Z, Lil Wayne- Swagga Like Us LL Cool J- I'm Bad Saul Williams- List of Demands Eminem- Lose Yourself Busta Rhymes and Linkin Park- We Made It Notorius BIG- Victory Motorhead- The Game Really like these for a pre-game playlist
  13. Our 7 on 7's are a part of a passing league. It falls under seperate guidelines from our 2-a-days.
  14. Some added perspective... We had 7 on 7 today here in Texas (we are a part of a passing league that plays every Tuesday). We played today at 6:30. We played 3 games. It was 104 degrees. There were eight teams. We had water, shade and trainers ready. We had no incidents. Any practice can be run in hot conditions IF the proper precautions are taken. I know that schools have had issues and I don't want to minimize any incidents (I, myself have had two different bouts with heat exhaustion that led to fainting). I really believe that the proper techniques for a quality two-a-day practices are out there and it is up to coaches to partner with trainers to minimize the risks.
  15. I don't know Mr. Watkins, but he must be a very intelligent young man to get into Wofford College. I'm sure he will draw interest from the Ivy League schools in time. Congrats to him!!!
  16. I'm a fan of two-a-days. As folks have said, they must be done well to minimize risk. We have two full time trainers at the school I coach. We also have cool zones and tons of water all over the practice fields. We also don't go in the heat of the day. I think two-a-days help the younger players see the effort it takes to be successful and they get a crash course in what we do. For the older players, it gets them in the football mindset both physically and mentally. Risks need to be controlled, but if they are, I like the two-a-day practice. Are there any coaches on this site that are against them? Also, I think malachi's question is a good one; are there any programs folks can point to directly and say "these guys don't have two-a-days"?
  17. You sure it wasn't just a 50 front? The only reason why I ask is because it really doesn't makes sense to widen that tackle out so close to the end and leave a gap in the middle like that unless you are in an eagle front. The minute my QB sees that, he is audibling to the iso play (or belly for you old veer guys).
  18. Do you understand what is meant by a 3 and a 1? This is the position where a defensive tackle alligns relative to the interior offensive lineman. A "0" technique refers to a tackle lining head up over the center. All of the other numbers are relative to that position. A "1" technique shades the guard to the side closest to the center. The "3" technique shades the guard to the side closest to the offensive tackle. We allign our defensive tackles in "3" and "1" techniques 90% of the time. We try to move these guys around to make the zone read play more difficult for the offensive linemen to read their keys prior to the snap. The double team relies on keying where these defensive tackles are to run the play. That is why we have had success versus spread teams (again, we have been to two consecutive title games and hopefully we'll win one of the things!!!).
  19. http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=ap-onegirl-teamtitle&prov=ap&type=lgns "The best small high school track team in Texas is once again a freckle-faced girl named Bonnie Richardson. Valedictorian of her 14-student senior class in the tiny farming town of Rochelle, Richardson won the Class A girls team state title by herself for the second consecutive year Saturday by single-handedly beating 56 other schools. Her reward was a second state championship trophy she won’t have to share with anyone—there are no other girls on the Rochelle High School track team. “It’s great. It’s over. It’s done,” Richardson said. “It’s nice that I can relax now.” The daughter of a Rochelle High teacher and a rancher, Richardson won four individual medals in five events: gold in the long jump and high jump, silver in the discus and bronze in the 200 meters. She also finished fourth in the 100 meters. " Just incredible!!!
  20. Like Cats, my response may come off like I'm being a jerk but it is not intended to be rude. Run your defense! If you want to stop any kind of "O", you are better off running what your kids are used to running then trying to pick the perfect defense for a week and trying to impliment it. Now, my favorite type of defense is the 50; I would employ what has been called a multiple 50. We would bring both 3 and 4 man fronts, bring a lot of pressure from different places and get the LB's involved in blitzes, stunts and coverages. The team I coach runs the 4-4. We bring tons of pressure from the LB's and we move our front around constantly so that you can't predict where the 3 tec or 1 tec will be. We have had success with it (been to the last two state title games). It really is about doing what you feel comfortable with. If your kids are comfortable, you can run any defense and be successful against most types of offenses.
  21. Can you shed some light on this, Sarge...this is a SHOCKER to me!
  22. There is a new coach, correct? Is he a doublewing guy as well?
  23. I hate to be the negative nelly, but none of these teams have a shot of touching X or T. If we are looking for who will be number 3, I think a team that has a shot is Scott County. Coach McKee always has those guys ready. I hope that one of the Lexington teams can step up as well.
  24. You don't have to tell me, I have been here for two years...we take the game very seriously in these parts. Thanks for the well-wishes. Let's get back to the thread topic, though. Sorry for hijacking the conversation.
  25. I hope to be a head football coach at the HS level one day.
