  1. It's not been uncommon for NKY girls to skip the all-star tryouts the past few years, if my memory is correct. I have never understood the disconnect, but it will be interesting to see if it plays a part in attendance at NKU the next two years for the Sweet 16.
  2. The fact that there has been no word on who is next at CAL is very interesting. Observers should keep a watchful eye on this one.
  3. Will the "Love Unlimited Orchestra" perform at halftime of home games? "Oh, baby ..."
  4. Suffice it to say that the goings on in Jefferson county are not squeaky clean. It's pretty amazing, and certainly in an un-pretty and shadowy way.
  5. Derby, I have no insights as to why, and was very much surprised at it happening. But then, last year I was surprised when CAL dumped their coach after what seemed to be an overachieving season. And now it's happening again to another coach. Crazy stuff. Advice: Whoever the next coach is, enter cautiously with your eyes wide open. One thing I did hear during the season - from a Louisville area coach - was that at least one of their middle school players was being approached by another area private school, which was not shocking to learn.
  6. Too bad. Nice lady, did a very good job with her team, very sad. It must be hard to please folks there, as the 2015-16 season will make it three coaches in three years. It will be interesting to see what type of interest there is in this job now. Year in and year out, this is one of the toughest districts in the state.
  7. Former Ballard star JaVonna Layfield soaking in NCAA tournament experience Former Ballard Lady Bruin Javonna Layfield is a freshman reserve for the Dayton Flyers, who defeated UL and UK in its last two games, and will face No.-1 UCONN tonight on ESPN (7:00 EDT). This article appeared in the Louisville Courier-Journal this morning (Monday). With Duke losing to Maryland, she may be the last Kentuckian still playing in the women's NCAA tourney.
  8. A very true and insightful comment. This is another example of how a few bad actors cause the majority to be punished. Too, too bad.
  9. The speed is not the issue, it is the space, the path, the intent.. Otherwise it is like calling a foul on a deer on the interstate for trying to get out of the way - not running into the path - of a semi truck. Sorry, but when a dribbler explodes into a moving defender who is with a gap between the two players, that is not a legitimate offensive move. Many of us know of examples when referees have made mention of things like "gain an advantage," or "had no impact on the play," etc. in which something other than the letter of the rules indicate, so picking and choosing when to be a stickler for the rules becomes very fuzzy and individually subjective.
  10. I appreciate your thoughts, Clyde, let's discuss this further. 1-I see this frequently. Let's say I receive a pass and land with a one, two step - establishing my first foot down as my pivot. Then I immediately and smoothly change my pivot with no bounce. And then I pivot and/or make a move from that point, AFTER having changed my initial pivot. This is clearly a travel, but is frequently not called. This is great for street ball, AAU, and ESPN highlight reel stuff, but it gives the offensive player a huge and illegal advantage against a defender attempting to execute a proper close-out. 2-We're on the same page on this one. 3-Although you may not have seen it, it happens often. I can't count the times coaches have griped, preached, scolded their kids to do it correctly, only to be disadvantaged when an opponent who has not taught it so strictly, has players getting away with it because the crew calling the game has not stayed on top of it. It is happening with more and more frequency than in the past - as when hand-checking and arm-barring were coming into vogue. As viewers watch NBA highlight films, play of the day, etc. seeing the "stars" doing it, it becomes the new norm. I'm not Dr. Freud or Dr. Pavlov, but these become conditioned responses for viewers - players, coaches AND OFFICIALS who watch. 4-Yes, sometimes (many times) this is miscalled. After the two-foot jump stop occurs, then only one-and-a-half steps are legal, correct/ Sometimes more than 1 1/2 are granted. The jump stop MUST occur during the process of ending the dribble, WHILE THE DRIBBLER IS IN THE AIR, correct? But players are on the ground with ball in hand and THEN making a jump stop, and THEN taking their one-and-a-half steps. My coaches taught good, fundamental defensive principles, those that have defenders with a good stance, in an established position - without NFL forearm shiver arm-bar impeding a dribbler. However, when the types of illegal advantages listed above are permitted, and then the offensive player "human torpedo dribbles" into a defender who's had virtually no chance of being stationary, I find it impossible to penalize the defender for not having a LGP, as the other rules are simply not being purely enforced. "Out of control dribblers" who zero in on defenders are not any different than dribblers who are guilty of shoving or elbowing defenders who are sliding and legally defending dribblers.:
  11. Wow, the Diddle Arena score board was lighting up like a pinball machine. A great a game. Male has so many more young talented players - arguably more than any other team in Louisville.
  12. These four items are too much to address, so this rant will target only #3. WHAT ON EARTH CONSTITUTES A WALK IN 2015??? Can someone tell me? Let's see what regularly takes place in games at all levels: 1-Catch the ball, switch pivot foot, then begin making a move, dribbling, etc. 2-Catch the ball with both feet established on the floor, hop both feet to get into "rhythm jumper" mode 3-Catch the ball on the move, in full stride, taking two or three steps prior to beginning a speed dribble 4-Attack the rim on a "dribble-drive," end the dribble and then hop, and then take two or three steps to get to the rim Again, this type of stuff happens on all levels. I'm checking out ESPN highlights, plays of the day, etc., and it goes on all the time. It's glorified with "Oh, Babeeeeeees" from Dickie V. and others. It is an abomination and bastardization (no, not profanity here, so please, moderators, no censorship ... this is attempted legitimization of that which is not legitimate) of the rules of basketball! Why, how cannot this simple and time-tested rule not be called effectively? No, the rules do not need to be changed. No, we do not need to now have a fourth official added to the crew - because the three just cannot keep up with the action on the floor. No, we do not need committees to study, evaluate, and then have the ridiculously worded measures such as "points of emphasis" each year - what a joke all this slop is. JUST CALL IT AS IT IS WRITTEN! I have twin granddaughters who are first-graders playing their first organized b-ball. A friend came up to me and asked me, "When, at what age, do they call traveling - grade school, middle school?" After watching lots of hoops on TV, in the gyms, from the sidelines, etc, this year, and most recently, the sweet 16 the last three days, well, I'm not sure what to tell him. Folks, I've seen this slop with my own two laser-repaired eyes, and I'm pretty sure of what I speak. Help and old brother out and let him know when the rule was officially changed. This is getting worse rapidly. ... and we haven't even addressed the "human torpedo dribblers" yet, let alone items 1, 2 and 4 above.
  13. There is no voice like Nell's that can penetrate a crowded and noisy gymnasium. She will be missed. If she's interested, I hope she can pick up a headset and microphone and do some color commentary. She would be outstanding.
  14. No disrespect intended, but the region champion will be the winner of the Shelby Co.-Simon Kenton game.
  15. Playing on a college-length floor is a real advantage for the champion, as it's great preparation for playing at Diddle - and it will be an even greater advantage next year when the Sweet-16 will be played at BOKC. Not every region can do this, so it is a luxury for 9th region teams. Conversely, it might be an advantage/disadvantage to some teams in the region tourney, and may influence the outcome in ways different than if it was played on a standard high school floor. The greater good seems to be in helping the winner for the state tournament, but that's just on opinion.
  16. This stuff is getting old! Yesterday was the 3-year anniversary of the tornadoes that upset some region tourneys after ravaging several counties and towns across the state. And now, we are having blizzard forecasts of significant snowfall totals. The KHSAA event planners have my sympathies in dealing with this potentially unequalled disruption of post-season play. "Semper Flexibilis!" Can it get any more crazy?
  17. PTB, do you have a crystal ball working for you? You kinda called the first shot (Butler). We'll see about the second (Mercy).
  18. ... and nightmares! It had to be a sleepless night for many Trimble fans. Absolutely brutal heartache for them. The game exemplified fully the old Wide World of Sports opening line: "The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!"
  19. Tonight's games are good pairings and should be interesting. Trimble's first trip in years against perennial participant Anderson, plus the re-match of Gallatin & W-V. Buying a ticket tonight will be money well-spent.
  20. That's not a shock. Two years ago, Ballard, CAL and Eastern were all three ranked in the top-20, but only two were able to advance to the region tourney. Year in and year out, the 28th district is arguably one of the most competitive in the state. And IMO, Ballard's Alex Martin has proven herself to be one of the best senior point guards in the state this year.
  21. Leave well enough alone. Look no farther than north of the Ohio River to our Hoosier buddies to find a screwed up and lousy state basketball tournament, compared to its original incarnation. Curiosity not only killed their cat, but it cooked their goose, as well.
  22. Thanks for the scoop. No slight to OC meant by this, but good luck to the Lady Raiders. They are due.
  23. Might history be in the making tonight??? How many years has it been since: A) Trimble Co. went to the region, and B) Trimble Co. won the district title? C) It's already a bit historical in that South won't be going the 8th region party for the first time since 2005.
