What is the process and accountability of evaluating basketball officials?

Featured Replies

This should be a good topic for discussion.

I am asking someone who is a basketball official on this message board to elaborate and explain from start to finish how officials are evaluated and if there are consequences to not meeting certain standards.

There is no accountability. Period. Coaches and players get technical fouls and suspensions. Bad officials get paychecks and more games.

I'd assume basketball is the same way as baseball. Refs (or umpires) are evaluated by the assignor or designated people. In addition the refs (or umpires) are evaluated by the head coach of a team. The highest rated refs once the evaluations are combined are given postseason games while those not rated very well are left at home during the postseason. So yes there is accountability.

And part of the problem (atleast in baseball) is that head coaches decide not to do the evaluations for each game which then means the officials are being graded to the extent they should be. If more coaches filled out the evaluations, there is a better chance only the best officials make it to the postseason. I feel it's safe to assume this problem exists in basketball too.

Officials are rated each year by the local coaches. They are also rated by the local assignor. Those ratings will determine who works tournament games.

Not getting post season games is minor in comparison to what bad officials can cost a team during the regular season. And all you hear from assignors is that there is a shortage of referees. That means if you can walk and chew gum, you have a great chance of calling post season games in some capacity. At the very least you will probably get some district games. I saw a coach standing in his coaching box, coaching his team during a game. An official comes running down the floor and trips over the coach. Demands the coach sit down. Coach refuses. Official gave him a T and said "now you will" Same ref called district finals that year. Saw an official in the 11th at the LexCath tournament call a T on a coach 22 seconds into the game for saying "she walked". Saw that ref in the state tournament that year.

What can an official cost a team during the regular season? Because regular season rarely matters in Kentucky. All teams make the postseason.

A district seed game, that could prevent a team from advancing to regionals, and losing out on that money generated from being in the regional tournament.

Big difference in most districts in the 1/4 game and the 2/3 game.

You are telling me the postseason officials are the best the regions have to offer? That is a BIG wow for me!! There are ones that are worse than this??? Oh my!!! I thought they must have just drawn names out of a hat---or did first come, first served---seniority??? wow wow wow

….let the post season begin…..:ohbrother:

What type of accountability system would you recommend?

Yep, the ones you see in the regions are the best of the best. If you don't believe me, ask one, they will tell you how great they are.

More training. Or find another "hobby".

That's not an answer to "accountability." With limited number of officials as it is, if more leave the system, who will step up to fill their shoes? I wouldn't want to, with the lack of respect that some show them.

What I am hearing is we have low numbers of referees in the State, lack of evaluations from coaches post game, more training needed, and not much accountability (no one is asked to quit for not meeting a certain standard).

Maybe the KHSSA should figure out a way to address the low supply of officials. How can they recruit younger people to become officials? What about a marketing campaign to get more people involved in officiating? I think you are required to attend some training clinics during the summer if you want to officiate at the varsity level, but not sure.

If we had a bigger supply of officials it should help improve the quality of officials if they come up with a good measurement procedure that weeds out the weaker official.

Just my observations. In any case I would love to see the bar raised where every regions officials competence are elevated to a higher level.

Let the Big Business of the KHSAA foot the bill for training and payment for games. Maybe then they could recruit more officials, hold them more accountable, all the while taking some of the financial burden off the schools. What's Julian's salary?
